Pretty cool. I keep saying that this is a win for open standards and Meta probably does this to appease EU regulators. It’s no surprise that this happens as Threads launches In Europe.

It’s like blocking e-mails from Google. People can’t take a win.

Beeper already fixed iMessage on Beeper Cloud and is working on restoring Beeper Mini. Might take some back and forth but it still wouldn’t be surprise if it makes their reimplementation more resilient to Apple tampering.

Technology is not just integrated circuits.

This is biotech and patents, both firmly relevant to technology overall.

YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music and their fight against adblock and background play on free tier is part of appeasing copyright holders who get their cut just fine. There’s gray area but Google can’t flat out pirate music without getting sued into oblivion.

iMessage chats are supposedly horribly broken for people participating over SMS. It got so bad in the US that teenagers treat it as a status symbol too.

Hey, that’s not true. Apple forums reps will ask you to factory reset everything twice, then refer to store for servicing and then ghost you.

I’m well entrenched in Apple ecosystem, to the point I hate their guts and their “reset will fix everything” mantra.

Story time.

Lost one of the earphones in my APP2. Went to my local authorized service center to get a replacement since according to Apple they’re the only ones that are able to put it into the case. Alright, I guess you need to order replacement part so that doesn’t matter.

Couple of days later I pick them up, lady at the counter says to reset them when I’m home. Weird, they could do it themselves, I thought, but had little time to get into that debate. I come home, do the reset procedure, and nothing, keep getting earphone mismatch error. I read up on the internet that it could be mismatched firmware and on advanced gymnastics required to get it fixed, which brings me nowhere after trying for multiple hours.

I return AirPods to the service center and say - you did the service, you fix it. Week later I’m asked to pick them up, get them, return home and… it’s the same as before. I return them again, tell them not to call me until they make sure everything works, they take them in, call me couple of days later and this time I check them at the counter - and it’s the same fucking thing again.

In the end they replaced both earphones for free while out of warranty but I lost so much time I’m seriously pissed with Apple still.

I just hope they returned it in working condition and if not, didn’t play dumb and ask you to factory reset.

Lemmy is Activity Pub too and doesn’t have hashtags, it’s a pretty flexible protocol. But realistically they will probably bolt on AP later on, doesn’t have to be there from the get go. WordPress has AP integration now too and it’s just a plug-in for example.

It has some benefits to both consumers and automotive industry.

I live in an apartament block, as do many people. Can’t really charge when parking by the street. If I could go into subscription like service with a charging network where I don’t own the battery outright and just swap it at gas stations that solves a lot of issues. It’s faster than charging and I don’t have to own a battery outright which lowers initial investment. That battery doesn’t even have to have that great of a range either. Car company / charging network or whoever does the battery leasing benefits long term because they can charge more overall.

Those need to get electricity from somewhere and in many countries overall infrastructure is woefully unprepared for large scale deployment of this type, not to mention being unprepared for how renewable energy is produced and stored. It’s also quite vulnerable to vandalism.

Stellantis on it’s own is pretty big, they own Fiat, PSA (Peugeot & Citroen), Opel, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep off top of my head. Some smaller brands too. They might be starting with Fiat 500e since 500 line is a budget one that could have price driven even lower by decoupling battery cost.

For most of the current owners it’s not a problem, EVs are expensive so they likely own houses (where they can top up whenever) and are fairly wealthy. Battery swapping means hassle free and cheap now for the rest of us.

Eh, there’s all kinds of automatic user bahviour predicting that’s quite useful without “AI” that could be even better. For example, when I am by the local supermarket and pull up my phone and search for apps it “knows” where I am and suggests parking fee app (which I’m about to use). I can imagine this could be expanded in some unexpected ways with correlations derived from machine learning models.

Similar experience here. I rely on mobile broadband for home internet and was okay for many years on LTE. Speeds up to 110mbps, at worst 30mbps during peak hours.

Around a year ago my carrier installed 5G equipment on a local tower (300 meters away), I got a €300 5G modem/router and for a brief moment got whopping 130mbps. Not the best purchase but at least I’m future-proof, I thought.

Then network stability went to the toilet. It’s a bit better when I disable 5G (🙃). I thought it might be my new modem but old one has same issues. My guess 5G equipment is not only overhyped but also buggy as hell. Obviously anecdotal evidence and ymmv.

I think you might be talking about 5G mmWave which is really high frequency and really impractical in most cases due to requiring clear line of sight. Other than that 5G is used on the same bands / frequencies that 4G is and it’s just utilizing them slightly better.

Thanks, I usually submit biz related stuff here, hardware related stuff to c/[email protected]. It’s not very active but I haven’t really found a good replacement to r/hardware on Lemmy.
