If you ride a bus without a ticket, other passengers will have to pay more because upkeep and salaries are more or less a fixed cost. That is if you can afford the ticket, it’s irrelevant otherwise. Also depends on profit margins but I think it explains the point.

It takes no effort to come up with made up antivax lines of reasoning since they don’t have to be true. Disproving them takes much more effort so it’s worth knowing the most common ones.

Google being an ass about alternative YouTube clients is somewhat dumb but they likely prefer to control user experience. They’re a for profit entity so it shouldn’t be that surprising. Google kicking users that cost them money is not dumb.

TikTok creators I follow get miserable amounts of views on YouTube. Shorts algorithm is nowhere near as good as TT and it’s missing loads of features that make TT unique. If those creators were forced to move they’d probably go with Instagram but that’s a poor replacement too.

As a European I’m curious how TT will look like without Yanks. It’s already much more usable after it was banned in India so there’s that.

I’m fairly sure that long term TikTok plans to do long form videos too and their current approach has a benefit of getting their foot in the door. No other competitor of YouTube managed to do that before.

The neat thing about TikTok algo is that that they introduce different things and fine tune it to your liking without making things stale. This means those that are there for short form videos will keep on seeing them and their flow won’t be interrupted. Those that are interested in longer ones will be presented with them. It’s already happening but UI really needs refinement as it’s kinda jarring now. It’s still much better than how YouTube is trying to force shorts on their current users though.

If you’re after moderate right flavored discussion I sympathize but you’ll have trouble finding it as the broader right has been consumed by alt right and far right. If your point is that those viewpoints specifically are missing from Lemmy then I’d say it’s a good riddance. I just wish Lemmy was as hard on some immature leftie takes.

I love the original patientgamers subreddit so I was stoked to find this community. And because lemmy seems to have a more knowledgeable crowd any topic I posted here had great engagement and discussions, despite the small community. Lemmy 0.19 changed how monthly active users are counted (including upvotes) and lemmy.world upgraded to that version 3 months ago. I’d be more interested in post and comment counts.

At their scale and cost optimization it’s likely one of the few remaining holes to plug. I wouldn’t underestimate how many people try to block YouTube ads which adds up quickly. Whatever the benefit is from allowing people to keep draining their resources, it probably doesn’t outweigh benefits in the non-0% interest rate environment. Their monopoly is also nowhere near threatened and their biggest competitor could be banned in the US.
