I would assume that extended support covers built-in apps like Edge.

Dang, I haven’t heard of this before and I still play Settlers II via Return to the Roots. Genuine thanks for sharing.

  • YouTube Premium
  • Apple One Family (Music, TV+, iCloud, Arcade)
  • HBO Max (best value for high quality content but Apple is very close these days)
  • Prime (barely use it but it’s $12/yr here)
  • Game Pass Ultimate
  • Usenet Farm, couple of odd blocks and indexers
  • Carrot Weather

Considering paying for RSS provider but they all seem overpriced for what they do above Feedly free tier.

Sync across devices at free tier which is the main thing. You pay by having access to things like real-time updates, filters, summaries etc. I don’t keep a vps these days and I have a preferred client that’s limited to commercial solutions.

Even on gaming subs it seems like every other post results in a discussion about the evils of capitalism.

I think it depends on community, I avoid all .ml ones for that reason. Don’t get me wrong, I could go on about evils of capitalism for hours if prompted but the real issue is that most of the user base is 13 years old either in their actual age or mentally so you’re seeing same performative cynicism over and over again. I’m also getting a feeling that over last 3-4 months it got much worse.

It’s the common spaces / topic-based communities that are mostly affected by this so there’s no escaping this if you’re here for the news etc

I’d say Putin is a product of society that allows anything as long as you don’t rock the boat and steal only from the people you’re allowed to.

misk ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

That was my point though. Soviet / post-soviet countries are effectively very hyperindividualistic despite enforced societal conformance. There’s this perceived ingenuity where people will go great lengths to come up with clever ways of skirting the law. It’s what makes it incredibly hard for society to become mature enough to rely on systemic solutions to problems and gives way to authoritarian rule.

Piracy is fine and mostly harmless but I don’t like idolizing it because there can be a really dark undertone to it.

It’s not all bad. Artifact uses “AI” to change clickbait titles into more descriptive ones for example.

misk OP ,

Slippery slope is a logical fallacy.

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s for the Artifact users.

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, little control over presented articles was what led me to drop it when I was considering reddit alternatives but I’d kill for that de-clickbaiting feature to make way to RSS readers and link aggregators.

I expect them to cover this in as much detail as possible. They are probably the last big tech / business news website standing. I know Gizmodo, Engadget, Tech Crunch etc exist but nobody seems to have resources and connections The Verge does.

misk ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s not the same although I must admit I didn’t know 404 had this kind of coverage and now it’s in my RSS :)

misk ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Me neither. Even though I don’t use Instagram / Threads I know it’s literally their thing, quite often communicated by management in interviews etc.

I use Apple hardware because it’s made by a company that has a business model based on high margins. Google is an advertising company and their business model is selling my data.

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Google makes money predominantly on ads.

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

In terms of overall revenue it’s a side hustle for Apple, unlike Google they can live without it.

Ad business is centered around profiling people, trading this data with other ad companies to enrich those profiles, and using it to shove ads down your throat. Thought it was common knowledge, sorry. Here’s more in depth explanation: eff.org/…/google-says-it-doesnt-sell-your-data-he…

Google sells your data: eff.org/…/google-says-it-doesnt-sell-your-data-he…

I definitely don’t idolize Apple, check my post history :p

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, but I have to use some kind of phone. And TV box. And computer. Apple is definitely better than the alternatives in terms of data brokerage and serving me ads, which is important to me.

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

This one:

Can you walk me through your logic that Google would sell your data? Who would they sell your data to, exactly, and how would that be financially advantageous to them?

misk OP ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

Have you considered taking a look at EFF report that I linked?

misk ,
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

They could get on with BG3 = DOS3 thing and just go ahead with Divinity: Original Sin 4 for their next title.

This is either a criminally underrated or criminally undiscovered channel but this song is just perfection.

God forbid our communication protocol of choice gets widely adapted before global communist revolution.
