The Spotify Car Thing cost $100, but I can't use it anymore. (lemmy.ml)

EDIT: The only reason why I still had it at this point was because I could use it with other apps. However, now that my Spotify Subscription is cancelled, it doesn’t work with anything. It’s mildly infuriating because today, I can’t still use it with other apps like I was able to yesterday....

mindbleach ,

Fuck streaming. Return to a big dumb pile of MP3s.

mindbleach ,

Nice weather we’re having.

Lemmy probably feels like Reddit when it first started, all warm cuddly and friendly to newcomers eager to discuss and collaborate around central topics.

I joined reddit on the tailwind, so it was all echo chamber, we hate newcomers, gatekeeping, automod frenzy, too many rulebreakers, too many rules, etc I could be wrong, but thats what I imagine it used to be like.

mindbleach ,

I was around when reddit first started. There were Nazis. It seemed fine, because Nazis were useless idiots, and people told them to go fuck themselves.

Reddit in 2016 actively helped install a fascist who eventually tried to overthrow American democracy.

Reddit now is a place where “fuck off, Nazi” is punished more reliably and more harshly than being a goddamn Nazi.

This service feels familiar - but not for the reasons I’d like. The fools in charge of every popular instance think scolding “be polite!” and punishing rudeness instead of trolling are a force multiplier for trolls. If you can just keep saying dumb shit until someone says a no-no word - they get the boot, and you win.

I want a forum where “here is why you’re an asshole” is moderated based on whether the explanation is correct.

mindbleach ,

Haha, no. There’s a reason /r/Atheism was one of the default subs. All that Ron Paul didn’t come out of nowhere.

mindbleach ,

Big ‘/r/Politics is just like /r/Conservative!!!’ energy.

Shut.

mindbleach ,

You understand that idiom, but not ‘go on, make my day?’ Even when it’s patiently explained to you?

mindbleach ,
mindbleach ,

It’s in semiquotes because it’s paraphrasing. Jesus. This level of rigid demand makes sense if you’re on the spectrum or ESL or something - otherwise, what the fuck?

I said ‘Go on, tell me this one’s synecdoche.’ (Again: paraphrasing.) You said ‘It is synecdoche, though.’ I said ‘Correct. They both are.’ And then you started litigating like I’d insulted you, or contradicted myself. Even when I directly paraphrased what you wrote, to agree with it.

You missed a common idiom - had it laid out for you in detail - repeatedly took offense over nothing - and I’m guessing reported it. So I’m a little surprised to see you elsewhere in my replies, frustrated at overzealous moderation, when it’s your indirect implications in question.

You’re wrong about those too, by the way. “Turbulent priest” comments are a call to violence. That line was prototypical stochastic terrorism. Not directly saying “kill that prick” - but clearly communicating that you’d like that prick killed. Even in the twelfth century people recognized this was a flimsy excuse.

mindbleach ,

The worst sin of reddit mods was demanding “report and move on!” and then never doing anything about reports. Or scolding you for messaging the subreddit instead of using the report button.

Either do the fucking work or let people talk.

mindbleach ,

I did explain myself. That’s why I’m asking: what the fuck?

What was I supposed to do differently, here? What on Earth did you expect? Is there any sequence of words where you’d go, ‘oh, sure, I get it?’

For god’s sake, I didn’t leave it out, it’s why I said I assume you reported it. It’s the whole reason we’re having this conversation. You don’t get to leave these short-ass replies and pretend proper discourse requires all possible details to be covered.

mindbleach ,

It’s not an attack. It’s the explanation you asked for!

What else could you want?

mindbleach ,

It’s still not an attack. If you just keep assuming everything someone says to you is a personal affront, nothing they say matters. The nature of bad faith is that there is no right answer. You’ll just twist it all into veiled insults.

Even when - as in that linked thread - you fucking plainly expressed confusion, and had it politely dispelled.

You maintained your initial conclusion in spite of that. I am now asking: what the fuck was I supposed to say, instead? What did you want out of that interaction? Was there any combination of words in the English language, that would have satisfied you, or does any reply get labeled as “bitching?”

mindbleach ,

Others credit the GameFAQs forums closing. Which really tells you how long reddit’s been around.

A bunch of websites circa 2008 basically won the internet, and would be dominant essentially forever if they hadn’t all started lighting themselves on fire circa 2020. Apparently because of interest rates. I am no ardent anti-capitalist, but I can definitely say, this specific arrangement has been thoroughly fucky, and its collapse has been deeply stupid.

mindbleach ,

Stupid is an essentialist insult. I’m describing behavior. Not knowing something is fine. Being offended by the explanation is baffling.

You demonstrably expected an explanation for what I said. Which I gave. And that somehow made you act even more hostile and defensive.

Third time: what else am I supposed to say?

If there is some way to deal with this, that you would not consider degrading - what is it?

if there is no way someone can question your comments, that you wouldn’t consider a personal insult - how would anyone communicate with you?

mindbleach ,

Trans people in red states say you’re full of shit.

And your comment history reveals you as a lying fascist.

mindbleach ,

The Original Series is technicolor sci-fi horror dressed as episodic space exploration. It’s campy and melodramatic and by god does it know it. Some episodes were blatantly “what’s available on the back-lot next month?” and are a coin toss between stupid and incredible.

TOS had some movies (roman numerals) and they range from “what if an episode was three hours long” to “modern-day San Francisco zoo heist.” At their best they’re fun and at their worst they’re even more fun.

The Next Generation is high-concept ethical debate framed as the experiences of naval officers. The cast is seriously talented and the writing is usually excellent.

TNG had some movies (bald guy on the poster) and they were written by people who didn’t like the show for people who didn’t watch the show. You have to turn your brain off, but they’re well-directed.

mindbleach ,

After that, he was relocated to a hotel (due to being doxxed) where all he had to work with was a Fire TV stick, which he promptly then used to hack Rockstar.

Fuckin’ bravo. I mean, don’t do that, but on a purely technical level - nice.

mindbleach ,

There’s no ethical use of ransomware.

mindbleach ,

Probably, since you’d have time travel, but not just shoot the bastards.

mindbleach ,

IIRC it looked a lot like GTA V with some debugging info added. Most changes seem to be under-the-hood.

mindbleach ,

Jacob Gellar’s video on this is excellent… is a sentence you can say about many subjects. Anyway he highlights how the open ocean is kinda like deep space with zero visibility. Any square mile of open ocean is several cubic miles of water. Animals the size of cruise ships disappear at that scale.

Not so much in one well-searched lake.

mindbleach ,

You’re not confused. They are.

Except insofar as - how the fuck is anyone reasonable still surprised by this? Where have you been?

mindbleach ,

This shit’s going on in centralized big-name websites, while Lemmy instances fret about discussing piracy and ban people for being impolite to bigots.

I fucking hate the modern web.

mindbleach ,

No I definitely hate many disparate elements of the modern web. Browsers are controlled by an advertising giant that can’t even operate a decent search engine anymore. Legislators are still trying to demonize pornography, of any kind, as if two adults fucking in private is child exploitation… somehow. Every website that centralized disparate forums / galleries / chatrooms simultaneously went pants-on-head crazy in a panicked frenzy to make N+1 dollars.

I also hate people who demand “be polite!” without viciously cracking down on actual trolls saying stupid shit to bait blunt correction. And those trolls, obviously. It doesn’t have to be exclusive. There’s plenty to go around.

mindbleach ,

Which is especially funny, given the countdown until that’s no longer a market. It’s like using a refrigerator to sell ice.

mindbleach ,

As opposed to when?

At what point in internet history do you think website advertising was tolerable? Because in my eyes, it’s always been an aggressive obstacle to usability, since the dial-up era.

mindbleach ,

I have now, and I’m underwhelmed. As a test case I used a repeated failure point for Google and DDG: ‘“Apple I” keyboard’. As in, keyboards for the Apple I, which came before the Apple II. (I have some very stupid hobbies.) Major search engines overwhelmingly return Apple iWhatever keyboards, or just Apple keyboards in general, with occasional vintage or retro hardware tossed in. The handful of SearX instances I tried returned nothing.

mindbleach ,

Movie piracy can be both, and it’s straight-up illegal. Hosting text is nothing in comparison. Images and video snippets are barely more than that. If all a website provides is bandwidth and storage, we all have that in spades, and if a website can’t let us share it, then a website is the wrong model.

Running a glorified chat server and image board in the year two thousand and fifty gigabits should not be remarkable. You are currently on a service patched together by randos hosting servers for fun. It replaces a website which, despite strenuous effort, made fuck-all revenue from a highly constructive and ordered community of millions.

I fail to understand how people got into the mindset that every website needs to make money. Some worthwhile and widely-desired things simply lose money, and that’s fine. Expecting to monetize your family would be gross. Expecting to monetize community is not much better, and equally fruitless. Squeezing any blood from that stone requires some fundamental betrayals of what those relationships mean and why people seek them.

Social media sites only turned a profit when they undermined democracy. Advertising is propaganda for sale. If you think capitalism prevents us from even talking to one another without being gouged for the privilege or subjected to destabilizing abuse, then torches and pitchforks are on your left.

California, a state unaffected by Mexico.

Uh huh.
