Functional programming flips your brain around backwards, but shader programming will turn it inside-out.

mindbleach ,

Some cartoonist said everyone has ten thousand bad drawings in them, and the only way to get them out is to draw them.

Everyone’s supply of bad code is limitless.

The engineering maxim is that to build something right you have to build it twice, but really, you can keep coding the same thing over and over and over, indefinitely, and you’ll keep finding ways that past-you was an idiot. You’ll discover there’s some terribly clever and beautifully clean way to solve a problem that was once a tremendous pain in the ass. You make this look like progress and growth by abandoning things (sorry, “shipping”) and using those clever new solutions in new projects.

In other words, we can’t worry that our code might be terrible. It is. Everyone’s is, to a more trained eye. And if there’s some living ur-coder who is above all others, they look back at things they did last week and mutter “well that was dumb.”

mindbleach ,

Your inability to care what words mean is not our problem.

Supporting a party that’s basically just the Nazis again is the same thing as admitting he’s a Nazi.

That is what it means for him to say the things he said. That is what those words mean.

Why don’t you care?

mindbleach ,

It means exactly the same thing.

He endorses a demonstrably bigoted right-authoritarian party - specifically for its attitudes toward minorities and foreign nationals. Their policy on immigration is “don’t.” Their stated goals involve mass deportation. They explicitly claim “the concept of multicultural society has failed” and “Islam does not belong in Germany.” Naturally they’re also big mad about women being equal and gay people existing. They were always extreme nationalists, and then a couple years ago their old leadership split off because their own party was starting to scare them, and as a direct result these German-nationalist Christian-supremacist anti-minority nutjobs got even more blatant.

They’re Nazis. He endorses Nazis. He is loudly and openly throwing in his lot, with Nazis.

mindbleach ,

They’re against immigration, Islam, refugees, gender equality, gay marriage, and Kosher food. They want the German army to bring back conscription.

They’re fucking Nazis.

He’s endorsing Nazis.

He’s a Nazi.

mindbleach ,

“Proving me wrong only pushes people toward my side,” said yet another predictable CHUD.

God damn, do I wish you people cared about words.

mindbleach ,

They’re Nazis and he endorsed them.

Feel free to have any opinion deeper than “nuh-uh.”

mindbleach ,

His words amount to admitting he’s a Nazi.

That’s what his words mean.

Especially when it comes to one of the most horrific organizations in human history.

Yeah, wouldn’t it be fucking awful if a modern political party stood for the same things as that organization? What kind of asshole would promote those bigots?

mindbleach ,

I think people misremember when discussions could be blunt without being abusive, because they didn’t recognize and appreciate sensible small-forum moderation. I don’t want oversight that forbids people from using a list of no-no words. I want human beings to skim a conversation and judge when people are causing problems.

In real-life interactions, there are legitimate occasions for being rude. Civility is an ideal. It’s not a death cult. You don’t pledge your honor to never calling someone an asshole. You just try to avoid dealing with assholes.

If a forum does not want strife between users, the mods better be proactive in removing fascists, trolls, bigots, and other dehumanizing forces.

If mods don’t remove that crap, but demand everyone play nice with those assholes - the forum exists for the benefit of those assholes. Everyone else is an unwitting victim for them to play with. And any moderation against accurately and reasonably saying ‘fuck off, abusive liar’ is acting as cover and force multiplication for abusive liars.

A vulgar explanation of how someone’s incorrect is often good-faith participation. Infuriating bullshit in televisable language is not.

mindbleach ,
mindbleach ,

Only meaning matters.

You have to evaluate claims.

But that’s never what happens, when rules demand “civility.” They don’t actually enforce positivity. They just punish people who are honest toward minimally-cautious assholes. Quite often without spending one moment looking at the other side of the conversation.

Reports cannot be handled correctly in a vacuum. Context is necessary. Otherwise ‘you are wrong’ is undecidable.

It’s like a generation grew up not knowing what trolling is. It’s not harsh language. It’s being an infuriating douchebag, in a way that people understandably tell you you’re an infuriating douchebag. And for all the forums I’ve seen where trolling and getting trolled are equally forbidden, every god-damn one of them treats ‘shut up, troll’ worse than being a fucking troll. Even if it is those exact G-rated words.

mindbleach ,

I’ve seen several subreddits insist that politely-stated fascism is better discourse than calling out fascists. In one case, with ‘so you’re a fascist’ being treated as an intolerable insult… even though being a fascist was apparently fine… and that guy was absofuckinglutely a fascist.

mindbleach ,

Vulcan dispute resolution being the snippiest academic back-and-forth.

French’s mustard was made by a man named French. Similar to Caesar salad being Mexican, because the dude’s name was Cesar.

“It’s named after a guy” causes a lot of this confusion in STEM fields. It’s always a misleading coincidence. Airy discs, the soft concentric rings of diffracted light, were documentary by one Dr. Airy. Dove prisms, resembling a dovetail joint, are pronounced doh-vay, after Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. Radon transforms are crucial to nuclear medicine and 3D imaging, but there’s no radon involved, just one Johann Radon. Metropolis light transport in raytracing has nothing to do with New York City, but everything to do with the Manhattan Project, and one Greek mathematician. Bloom filters, spreading points of data into smooth coverage, have a perfectly fitting name that happens to be surname of their creator… Burton Howard Filter.

Hot dogs are bastardized from three separate Germanic names. Frankfurt sausages sounded a bit formal, so you got “hot dachshunds,” except Americans could neither spell nor pronounce the name of that breed, so you get “hot dogs.” If you asked what a hot dog was you’d probably be told it’s a wiener on a bun, where the English word “wiener” is a loanword from the German conjugation of “from Vienna.” And we’ve come full circle by routinely referring to dachshunds as wiener dogs.

The less-fun tangent about the prominence of German food in American culture is that New York was famed for its wealthy German-American families until all their wives and children were on a boat that sank. I am not joking.

I’ll never get over Polandball calling them “made-up waffle country.”

Just be sure to say hello to the wrong people and you’re a shoe-in.

Bill takes an early lead out of sheer impish weirdness, but come on. He got wrecked by two dork-ass kids and their over-the-hill parental figures. If he was more clearly a memetic entity he might be something Q couldn’t just snap out of existence, but as-is, he’s just going to troll the shit out of a self-obsessed demigod until it wildly backfires.

‘We’re just performing loyalty and the details don’t matter’ is saying the quiet part into a megaphone.

Which Atari? The company got cracked in half after Warner bought them.

One half went to Jack Tramiel, then the grave, then a hard drive manufacturer, then Hasbro, then the grave again, then Infogrames, then the grave for a third time, then some kind of middle-eastern finance-bro vaporware hell that eventually spat out a funky PC nobody bought. Apparently they’re re-releasing the 7800 inside a 2600 case. Straight-up forty-year-old technology that still uses 4 KB cartridges. Honestly it sounds great. Not like they own most of the classic franchises, after Infogrames started hocking them in desperation.

The other half went to Midway and made most of the Atari arcade games you’ve heard of. Okay: Midway was bought by Bally, Bally Midway was bought by Williams, Warner ejected their games division as an independent company, Williams bought that, Williams ejected their games division as an independent company, and the part that was still OG “Atari Games” ceased operations around the turn of the millennium. Midway proper closed a decade later and was shortly purchased by Warner… again. But unlike the dead-skin-mask situation with the other half of Atari, Warner just took all their shit and left. That’s why they publish Mortal Kombat now.

EA meanwhile acquired Origin and squeezed them to death, acquired Bullfrog and squeezed them to death, acquired Maxis and squeezed them to death, acquired Westwood and squeezed them to death, acquired Dreamworks Interactive and sent them to the Medal Of Honor mines, accidentally acquired the leftovers of Psygnosis and left it to wither, acquired Criterion and stole RenderWare out from under an entire console generation, acquired DICE and sent them to the Battlefield mines, acquired PopCap and squeezed them to death, acquired their Tiger Woods contractee after a decade of great work and squeezed them to death for absolute shovelware, and… actually did an okay job with Respawn after Titanfall 2 didn’t sell well. And they’ve been kinda decent with Bioware. But other than that they’re the goddamn devil.

Schnitzel, spatzle, and spargel, the most delicious things that sound like you’re making shit up.

“You could use chicken, but you still have to hammer it flat.” “Come on. And they make the noodles with a colander? The thing you drain noodles in?” “No really, and there’s aspargus, but they grow it underground so it turns white.” “If you don’t know, don’t lie.”

Mentioning Larry Ellison by name feels redundant. Like saying Earth is part of our solar system.

Haven’t you heard? They’re bringing it back, exactly as before, except now you can receive money for being awarded.

Which is going to go so goddamn terribly in no time flat.

In the most-recently previous final episode, Leela’s list of destinations includes the “Arch of Triumph.”

There is no such thing as generated CSAM.

That is the entire god-danged point of calling it “CSAM.”

You can’t abuse children who do not exist.

mindbleach ,

It’s entirely possible to do something like that - the same way it was in 2008. Keep that shit separate.

You have to let users say “fuck off, Nazi.”

You have to find moderators who’ll see that and say “yeah, fuck off, Nazi.”

The site itself doesn’t need to do much of anything. Reddit’s smartest feature was the separation of communities, so people could largely ignore shit they didn’t want to deal with, and all the admins forbade was starting shit across communities. That way tiny subforums of decent people could be reasonably protected from interference by bastards, and tiny subforums of bastards could be kept irrelevant.

For example, the /r/Holocaust subreddit was run by and for Holocaust deniers, for years. Obviously that’s awful. But it affected approximately nobody, beyond the initial unpleasant surprise. There wasn’t some “trending” feature that fed unwitting users to Engagemagog, whenever people spoke negatively of the fuckers responsible. Early reddit was a site with Nazis, but very plainly not a site by or for Nazis. Decent people outnumber them by a huge margin. So long as they can safely spot, exclude, and tell off those bastards, the co-existence of bastards is tolerable.

Where deliberate neo-Nazi forums like Voat differ from that is in explicitly protecting the worst among them. They screech about freedom of expression but only ever mean the unquestioned ability to yell at the outgroup. That’s why none of them really like deliberate neo-Nazi forums. They can’t stand each other, either. They demand a captive audience of victims.

If people lack the freedom of association to stay the hell away from Nazis, your site exists to supply bigots with victims.

If people lack the freedom of expression to even tell Nazis to fuck off, your site exists to deliver those victims on a silver plate.

It is possible to hit a balance where intolerant bastards are tolerated, but treated in accordance with their beliefs by everyone sensible and kind. But it’s much simpler and easier to recognize that some beliefs aren’t worth protecting.

Also that article is predictably a mix of good insight and total crap. SSC has the worst double-reverse-zero-awareness both-sides-ism on the internet. ‘Fox lies and projects, but I dunno, maybe they were okay at some point. And as the right lost touch with reality, The Media™ really did develop a liberal bias, proving them right somehow.’ Nah. Identifying bullshit is not a bias. People getting more disgusted as assholes embraced fascism is not somehow to blame for people embracing fascism. If consistent human decency looks like “ghettoization” against Nazis, your perspective is fucked beyond all reason.

mindbleach ,

A pleasant surprise from both of oh he means never actually removing content, just letting bastards operate sotto voce.

And still both-sides-ing “people you consider bad,” as if the reasons for censoring fascists, leftists, and anyone who criticizes the CCP are equally valid. I despise that “just because you disagree” framing of genocided fantasists versus… their victims.

And concluding that we should just do his thing, by default, and maybe he’ll listen if anyone wants to do something else. As if the concepts and their dangers are brand new.

Letting people organize on your platform has consequences. Getting together a labor union is fundamentally not the same thing as getting together a lynch mob.
