They work in tech, promotions are achieved by moving employers. Internal mobility is always terrible in tech companies.

macrocephalic ,

We used to use them for the same thing in Kmart (Australia) when I worked there 20 years ago. They were used to clear the float so you didn’t have too much cash in the register. Now that 90% of transactions are on card I bet they don’t use them anymore.

macrocephalic ,

If you watch ads instead of paying a modest fee to remove them then you’re a clown. Companies do need to make money for the services they provide, I just disagree with the amount.

macrocephalic ,

I pay less than 5usd for a family plan, I just subscribed through a developing nation with a VPN.

macrocephalic ,

That was my comment about the amount that should be charged. I’ll happily pay $5/mo, but not $15. I’m happy to pay for services, just not the amount that many want to charge.

macrocephalic ,

I spent a lot of time in a few forums in the 00s. Many of them still exist but they are shells of what they used to be. One that I check into once a year or so has about one post per year - and it’s normally a post asking if anyone is still there. The owner keeps it running as a memorial to one of the mods who has passed.

Just on statistics, it seems unlikely that in the period of time that coconuts have been floating around that they would only have made it there about the same time as explorers. Surely if they could make it there floating then they would have much earlier.

macrocephalic ,

Imagine if they had instead hired 500,000 people on $100,000 each. They could have bought the entire city of Detroit and had it making Teslas, instead they’ve got one coked up narcissist.

Mad Max Fury Road. I honestly don’t understand how people like it. The storyline is paper thin to the point of being almost missing. I guess the steampunk motif is good if you’re into that, but the rest of the movie was just trash.

macrocephalic ,

I give the old ones a pass because they were made outside of Hollywood, on tiny budgets, with relatively unknown actors. The new ones cost millions and were full of big names throughout the whole production.

macrocephalic ,

Yeah but they’re arab lives, so they don’t count them.

macrocephalic ,

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, etc. It’s hardly the end, the market has just been gobbled up by the big players as usual

macrocephalic ,

Me too. I hope they’re different people

macrocephalic ,

It’s so much so that every news article that quotes it still says “X, formerly Twitter”.

All future AI will have autocorrect errors and will look like no one read it before hitting enter. You’re welcome.

macrocephalic ,

I still remember mine too. I wonder what useful information I could remember if I didn’t remember shit like this?

It would look bad for a lot of governments if we knew what our militaries did. McBride’s information looked bad for multiple governments so they all agreed to use him as an example.

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees (arstechnica.com)

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company’s return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

Which companies pay for WFH expenses? I worked for the biggest software company in the world in 2022 and there was no WFH allowance. We were 100% WFH at that point.

macrocephalic ,

I use a 55" 4k TV. The screen real estate is great.

macrocephalic ,

Even the most secure VPN technology is only as secure as the endpoint.

I genuinely read the headline and thought “Good on them for standing up for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians imprisoned in Gaza”, and then I realised the truth.

I have young kids and recently learned what Roblox actually is. My kids will never be allowed to spend a cent on that. I am happy to buy them suitable games.

The Garden of Eden was based on The Galápagos Islands.

I’m kidding here, but the similarities are odd. The weather is always between 70F and 85F all year round. The biggest threat to you on the island are apples. You shouldn’t eat the apples that grow on the island; the small green ones are poisonous. Oh, and it isn’t easy to immigrate there. It’s a place where only few...

macrocephalic ,

There’s no mention of apples in the biblical record, just “fruit”

The US rolled our democratically elected government in the 70s and we still lick their boots to this day. You’d be forgiven for thinking I was talking about a country in the third world, but I’m talking about Australia.

This is more like someone offering a “brand new method of personal travel” to replace your car, but it turns out that it’s just an old Honda with only one seat, a fuel tank that only holds 10L, and a custom navigation app. There’s nothing it does that your Honda can’t do better, and you won’t want to replace your Honda with this.

macrocephalic ,

What’s your problem with what dildos?

macrocephalic ,

They should have just kept incrementally upgrading W10. People don’t like big changes and there’s not much encouraging people to 11 except 10 going EOL.

macrocephalic ,

Yes, Toyota is using these announcements to dissuade customers from going electric while they continue to sell only ice and hybrid vehicles. Remember that Toyota came out with the Prius 20 years ago and have done nothing since.

macrocephalic ,

Shouldn’t he resign based on this criterion?

macrocephalic ,

I’m sure there are people, but I think you’d be surprised how few there are. The vast majority of people make long trips very infrequently - to the point that most could hire a car or find some other means for those situations.

macrocephalic ,

Given the number of other issues in the post I’m going to guess it was hurried and autocorrected wrong. Happens to me all the time.

macrocephalic ,

Except David; he keeps leaving a big blue box in the lounge room.

The difference is that Vietnam and Afghanistan were civil wars. It’s very difficult to win a war when a sizable portion of the citizens are fighting against you. Ukraine seems to be very united against a common enemy: Russia.

The number of MPs who own investment properties means that this IS going directly to the source, but it’s doing it in a manner that they can’t fob off, ignore, or form a committee about.

Apple Removes WhatsApp, Threads, Telegram, and Signal from China App Store, says it complied with orders from the Chinese government (arstechnica.com)

If only the phone operating system allowed you to load applications from somewhere other than the official app store. Someone should make a phone that does that.

macrocephalic ,

Agreed. I dislike these countries because of who they are, not how they got rich.

macrocephalic ,

My phone was manufactured in 2022, cost under USD250, and has 8gb of ram. New phones generally come with 12gb or more.

macrocephalic ,

Some friend’s kids came up to me the other day and asked if I knew the guy Weird A.I. who makes funny videos of songs on YouTube. It took me a little while to realise what was going on.

macrocephalic ,

It’s pestilence, but I think petulance actually suits Trump better

For Mac I use ARC browser. It’s a bit different in UI than most browsers but it does some things I really like. It’s heavily optimised for keyboard commands, and it has separate “spaces” which you can create and define (e.g. personal, work, etc).

macrocephalic ,

Arc has really changed the way I expect a desktop browser to work now. It’s kind of annoying when I go back to Firefox on my PC now.

Airports charge money to use the Skybridge. If you travel with cheap airlines then you’ll often go to gates without bridges. It’s actually amazing the things that airports charge for.

Fortunately he doesn’t have to worry too much about Hamas because he’s not occupying their land.

macrocephalic ,

Ok, so there’s a risk of death. If I’m on a desert island then I’ll risk it, otherwise I’ll avoid.

macrocephalic ,

I know a few people who’ve done this. When they got married they decided they didn’t like either last name so just chose a new one. In one case it was the guy’s online handle - which was also a normal last name. In the other case it was a name from their favourite movie.

macrocephalic ,

Macrocephalic Seatweight. I guess it could work.
