Is OK GO coming out with a new video?

I guess you were never invited to the lemonparty then.

The same will happen any time a “get rich quick” scheme comes around. People saw things going up 100% in price from one day to the next, compared to a 2% per year savings account. That’s very enticing for anyone.

This one was at an impressive scale though. Probably because it was so accessible. I’d have my BIL in South America telling me he’s playing a game that mines some random coin. Can’t really say much other than to be sceptical and never risk more than you can afford to lose.

Was this guy at the store judging me?

i went to the mall to do stuff and wanted to try on some sweaters and asked the clerk where the fitting rooms were. and this dude instantly had this quite severe sort of - disappointed stern adult look about him as he pointed me there. like, he was very sort of clean and clean shaven and had a fitted sweater and everything. and...

kambusha ,

Now you need to go back wearing the most expensive outfit and carrying lots of bags of clothes from expensive stores, find the guy, and say, “you guys work on commission, right? Big mistake.”

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is usually a good thing to enable in order to make it more difficult for an unauthorised person to login to your account remotely, as they will need that second authentication to be able to login.

Unless someone has access to your computer, then cookies & history don’t really matter. However, if you login to facebook, and then leave your computer open for 10mins, someone could open up facebook again and you would likely still be logged in. If that’s a scenario you’re worried about, then you could erase all your browsing session data to ensure that you’re effectively logged out everywhere.

Edit: below 2 links are also good to check if your email and/or your passwords have been leaked as part of a breach. Before using them, I would do a bit of research on the site to make sure you trust it. Always be sceptical with sensitive info!

Just like in 1998, when The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table.

I think usually they are referring to “undivided attention” because technically, even though we’re pretty bad at it, you can do multiple things at the same time. I can drive, listen to music, and have a conversation but it starts to overload my brain at that point, as most of my attention is focusing on driving.

If we think of our brains & attention-span as RAM (memory), then some tasks take up more memory, and we have a limit to the RAM, so there are only so many processes that can run at the same time.

Advertisers/products/lovers, they’re all fighting for a bigger slice of your RAM.

Birdie birdie in the sky, why’d you have to do it in my eye. Is it water, is it spit, oh my gosh it’s birdie shit.

I didn’t realise 12ft.io has gone down but I believe their original slogan was along the lines of, “for every 10ft wall, there’s a 12ft ladder”, hence the name.

To distinguish from those “fake estate”.

No, I don’t know the answer but it reminded me of the slogan that Gob comes up with, “a Colombian cartel that WON’T kidnap and kill you.”

The difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut? 2 weeks.

It’s a dumb joke but your hair grows out, so even a haircut that looks bad initially, after a couple of days it looks natural again.

There’s also websites where you can upload an image of your face and try different hairstyles. That way you can “try on” virtually before committing to something in real life.

I think the best haircuts are the low-effort ones that work with your face type and head shape. But you generally just have to try a couple till you find one you like. Since you’re young, I would also try with longer hair since you might not get that chance later in life!

Good luck!

Mullvad also has an adguard DNS. In android, if you go to network settings and then “Private DNS”, you can add this hostname: adblock.dns.mullvad.net

I’m not exactly sure why, but I thought Abba was the artist

I don’t think anyone here is equipped to help you or give you advice. You can try 988lifeline.org and speak to them.

Help Getting News

Hello! I’m looking for help in finding ways to stay up to date with News “of the World” in the modern age. Having de-Googled (and, therefore, abandoned Google News), I find it hard to track what is going on outside of links posted to Lemmy/Mastodon (my only social media), and have no subscriptions to any streaming channels...

kambusha ,

Man, keep to the minimum amount of news and I think you’ll be happier in life.

That said, I’m not sure if you’ve considered podcasts to get news in a controlled dose? PBS news, BBC World etc. They usually have daily episodes available in various lengths.

I think fire is by far worse. Every single nerve ending is sending pain signals until your nerves eventually burn away. You’ll be suffocating at the same time in the smoke of your own burning flesh. Fucking awful way to die…

Don’t install “Element X” as it’s their beta app. They already have released a normal one called just “Element” from same company. Element X doesn’t have any way to sign up, so it’ll just be super confusing.

I use the sheeps. Pretty damn good at spotting awake sheeps now.

As sad as it is, it actually makes me hopeful that it can help push the agenda onto sustainable energy sources, as long as they are economically viable (which many are at this point). Once it starts hitting the bottom-line for large corporations, and better alternatives exist, that’s when we see change (not when millions of scientists warn about the devastating effects). Maybe we can finally have a climate agreement where they stick to the agreement part. Sceptical but hopeful.

Is there any way I can stop seeing sports posts?

I don’t know if this was asked before and I don’t know how to look for that so I’m sorry if this is a repeat but, I keep seeing American football posts which I couldn’t care less about and I keep blocking the communities but they’re like thousands of millions of communities that never end. And no, I don’t wanna stick...

kambusha ,

I know you said you didn’t want to stick to the subscribed feed, but can I suggest doing that while at the same time subscribing to the “trending communities” community so you can discover new ones. feddit.nl/post/5227714

I think blocking is just going to be a constant battle for you, as you’ll likely need a blacklist of every sports team, sports team abbreviations, sports keywords etc. etc.

Doesn’t have to be one or the other. Invite them along to your existing friend group activities if you think that person seems nice.

kambusha ,

I mean, I’m sure we can come up with a lot of reasons why not to do it.

My point was just that you don’t need to choose between hanging out with your friends and making a new friend. You never know, that person could become a friend for life. I think it’s worth making the effort but I understand it’s not for everyone.

I’m selective about who I keep as friends but I try not to close myself off initially, as I’ve been on the other end of it as well; being in a new city and trying to make friends. With some people it just doesn’t click, while others I still have as some of my best friends.

Anyways, I wasn’t trying to upset anyone, just giving my 2 cents

Is that true? Is there a legitimate reason why they shouldn’t be able to?

I’ve learned (I guess still learning) a new language as an adult for the last 2 years. I tried just about every method to learn (classes, courses, books, god knows how many apps/services). To get to the point of being able to accelerate your learning with foreign movies & TV shows, you need to have consumed around 200-400hrs of the language in a comprehensible format first. This is how I would do it if I had to again:

  • Forget about grammar for now. Grammar is boring and it will make you second-guess when trying to form sentences. Better to just practice and have someone correct you as needed. You’ll learn grammar naturally to an extent (i.e. it will just SOUND right), and you can supplement it later on when you have a better grasp of the language.
  • Use beginner audio lessons that focus on simple phrases and/or short stories (e.g. Pimsleur or US foreign service language tapes). This is to help train your ear to understand how words are pronounced. This should get you about 40-50hrs of practice.
  • Find some French youtubers that use the comprehensible input (Krashen) method to complement the audio course - some recommendations in this reddit thread
  • Once you have around 50-100hrs in, now is the time to find some easy content to consume. My recommendations would be: 1) movies/tv shows you already watched in english but dubbed in french (so you already know the context. You might need to leave off french subtitles if they don’t match audio), 2) podcasts or audiobooks where only one person speaks at a time, 3) french kids shows
  • After 100hrs, I would continue to consume content as detailed above but you might be able to throw in some easy french-made movies/shows at this point - your goal is to understand about 80%. If you find you can’t understand enough, put it on the backburner to revisit later. You might also be able to read an easy french book now too. You could just reread a book you’ve already read in English but translated in French now (again, so you have context; I read Harry Potter for instance)

Learning a new language at an older age was pretty eye-opening. It’s definitely harder than I expected but it’s so rewarding to be able to connect with a different group of people at a much deeper level, as you also start to understand their culture a lot more, and it gives you access to new movies, shows, theatre, books, music etc. etc.

Good luck on your journey and let me know if you have any Qs!

For IPTVNator, which video player do you use? I tried videojs and html5 and nothing would come up.
