Alabama governor signs law banning diversity programs in schools (www.reuters.com)

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed into law on Wednesday a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in public schools, making the state one of a few to enact broad measures against what she and other Republicans call a leftward tilt in U.S. education....

I admit I didn’t realize the sequel even came out yet, but it has an 88/9.0 on Metacritic. Overlooked maybe, but underrated?

Did we read the same article? The point is about more severe crashes.

If you have data to back your point up, I’d love to see it. I’m not aware of any major changes in vehicle purchases. I’m not sure how that matches with more overall crashes, as the article reports.

American Bible Society to close its $60 million museum after 3 years (www.inquirer.com)

The museum created by the American Bible Society in July 2021 said it would be open to visitors until March 28. The Christian ministry nonprofit that translates Bibles and sends them around the world has recently been besieged with challenges including layoffs, funding troubles, and five CEO changes within two years.

I would NEVER buy a vita just to unlock it and play the Tales of Innocence English Patch. Idk what you’re talking about, piracy is illegal!!!1 And what sort of loser drunkenly impulse purchases a video game system on eBay because they want to play one game?

edit: if you are reading this, you definitely shouldn’t buy an SD2Vita card for a dollar on AliExpress, which is like 1/10th the price of Amazon and the exact same product. Just like you should never engage in piracy!

I see Ys mentioned a lot! I’m a casual JRPG fan (played Persona 3, 5, maybe half the Tales games, maybe 3-4 FF games, Xenoblade trilogy, Bravely Default + both sequels, 2 or 3 Dragon Quest games, and probably a handful of others). Anything in particular that you’d compare Ys with? And do you recommend I play it in any specific order? I skimmed the site and it looks like they’re all connected, although not in order, which makes me think of MGS.

    The “Gilded Age” was a term coined by Mark Twain, a satirist. It wasn’t a good time. So I’m not 100% sure which direction you’re going with this

    Edit: for clarification, Twain meant that a thin veneer hid all the terrible shit underneath (wealth disparities, political corruption, etc)

    jeffw ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    The British Anthem is “God Save Nestle,” the Spanish anthem has words again, and America has not changed at all

    jeffw ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    Where did you get that definition?

    en.m.wikipedia.org/…/Gilded_Age_(disambiguation)

    The term is a term used by US Historians and coined by Twain. The point is that everyday folks didn’t get a chance, just the ultra-wealthy.

    It was named after an 1873 Mark Twain novel by historians in the 1920s who saw this interval of economic expansion as an era of materialistic excesses combined with political corruption.

    jeffw ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m just confused? No need to be aggressive about it. Are you just making up your own definition for existing terms? That’s just not really how language works, since it’s based on a mutual understanding of what words and phrases mean.

    The only issue I’d see is that there ambiguity as to whether it’s a date or just shopping with a friend. But that happens with a lot of dates unless you’re doing something classic like asking them to dinner, which isn’t always the most exciting date

    jeffw ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s true, at worst you get a friend, but I do think your perception going into something can shape an experience. I’m not gonna sit here and say stuff like that”you’ll get stuck in the friend zone” and other incel bs, but I do think expectations matter.

    People keep saying it’s a “ban,” when it’s really going to end up as a forced sale.

    Pornhub shuts down in Texas... and predictably, VPNs benefit (mashable.com)

    From the article: “Unsurprisingly, this skyrocketed searches for the best VPNs. According to a SlashGear report sent to Mashable, searches for “Texas VPN” jumped by 1,750 percent in the past day. It also spotted a 1,600 percent increase for the phrase “How to access Pornhub.””

    Conspiracies that involve large groups of people, like the entire C-suite at Boeing, generally don’t work out. It would have to be a personal grudge, not a corporate move

    jeffw ,
    @jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

    Yes, from a strictly legal perspective. But if we take a step back and ask ourselves “who is responsible?” it’s a little different.

    The resources argument doesn’t really make sense. Locking someone up for life is more resources than a few years of rehabilitation.
