For me it has been etching circuit boards and specifically making my own liquid tinning solution at one point. I mostly do hydrochloric acid/hydrogen peroxide on larger stuff and ferric chloride on smaller prototypes.

Documented hardware and mainline kernel or is it like every unownable other phone with an orphan kernel to steal ownership from the consumer? Orphaned kernels mean rental phone you can never own. This is the depreciation mechanism in Android. This is the only question that really matters in the big picture grand scheme.

If it has a mainline kernel, and hardware documentation, it will last decades even as a spare backup you never actually use. It will run any Linux, or find a second life in dozens of ways. It will even have long term value.

I have the largest laptop GPU from the last generation; 3080Ti @ 16GB.

You must have very small fans moving a lot of air in a laptop. That means speed and speed is the primary cause of noise in fans. Larger desktop PC GPUs can have a larger heatmass sink and more/larger fans that run at a slower speed.

Aside from the noise, the laptop has a more complicated set of breakouts and interrupts for thermal and battery management. This means it may have different firmware/software support and issues if you do higher risk types of activities like messing with the clock rate.

One example I can give is when using AI on my laptop with various models I am able to split between CPU and GPU for inference. The thermal performance will impact throttling. I must balance both the workload and the thermals to maximize the inference speed for things like Low Rank Adaptors training where I need to run a model for a long time at near maximum output for my hardware. If there is more load on either, the shared thermal management will throttle sooner. Indeed I wrote a script to monitor the CPU/GPU temps and memory usage every few seconds just to dial in this issue.

I think it depends on what level the smart aspect is implemented and how integrated it is. Screen technology has been getting more and more locked down by corporate privateers/thieves.

I mostly tried hacking on small displays, and finally gave up as it was over my head. There is a whole lot going on in various layers and protocols. My rule would be to only buy a product like this if I can find a functional example of someone using my exact hardware with this exact hack in question.

In my experience, prototyping or hacking around with displays is a losing game because they are not constructed for handling like this. You must go to extremes to avoid placing strain on the flex ribbon connections and must be very careful about taking the thing apart to test with it disassembled. It only takes a tiny mistake to damage something that can not be repaired. They are usually sensitive to small nonsense too. These are fast parallel circuits. I stay away from them, but maybe I’m just being soft.

I wouldn’t trust any oven based methodology because most have ancient barely functional electronics. Like the temperature control circuit could be orders of magnitude better for a total BOM cost of ~$1-$2, but they ship with absolute garbage instead. The overshoot, undershoot, and relative average are all wildly random. Every model and likely every unit are vastly different. Every unit I have taken apart is the same turd junk like electronics in a different dress.

That doesn’t help now. Sorry for the bad day.

Hey this really amazing thing just happened to me and my friends group. It was world changing. Half of those friends don’t give a shit and never respond to text messages again… DECADES PASS … No one bothers to write any of it down. A major power predictably displaces everyone in the region to quell quixotic zealotry. No one can find work, they are homesick; outcasts; gutter fodder of the diaspora. Someone sees a Craigslist job post about a religious startup. A few dudes write a plausible fan fiction, they even copy each other’s homework like primary schoolchildren, errors and all; not even intentional obfuscation errors, the real deal little kid kind. Their works all fit into a prequel timeline niche. A COUPLE HUNDRED YEARS PASS Fan fiction universe is fucking god mode. Why? Because people are fucking stupid. Humans are sub sentient. There was no separation of church and state. This was as political as it was emotional, lack of fundamental logic skills, and survivalism. I don’t believe any fucker that tells me some unhappenable story decades later, and especially when the story can’t be corroborated except by his homework copying buddies getting put up in peoples houses and not needing to work because he wrote a plausible—to a largely illiterate population—fan fiction.

Why is there a pronounced (stereotypical) dichotomy between listening music and gaming music?

Not talking about less than macro scales so don’t get pedantic about some exception. The early days were limited by silicon tech and memory storage, but those don’t exist any more. So why is it that game music and pop cultural music have not seemingly cross pollinated? Micro genres? Other?

IMO orphan kernels are not Linux. If it can’t update with mainline, it is a sterile mule. So no, even as an avid user of Graphene, it is not Linux because google has stollen ownership with an orphaned kernel using proprietary and publicly undocumented hardware.

In this vain, no mobile chipset or radio modem has been FOSS or Linux in a very very long time if ever. Like the last radio that was fully documented was the Atheros stuff, and the last processor to come close to fully documented is the stuff Leah Rowe supports in Libreboot and that is only because of her hacking skills.

A gentoo install once upon a time… and learning how to configure a kernel. Also a slightly better understanding of kernel module configuration for custom or odd ball hardware and a vague idea of what to look for in hardware support if I want to dig deeper.

How do we package food products sustainably in coming decades?

I imagine all plastics will be out of the question. I’m wondering about what ways food packaging might become regulated to upcycling in the domestic or even commercial space. Assuming energy remains a $ scarce $ commodity I don’t imagine recycling glass will be super practical as a replacement. Do we move to more unpackaged...

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

As fireweed said, I think it is too energy intensive especially with the contamination issues.

I think it would be interesting if packaging in many areas was standardized to actually useful products, like if products came in aesthetically designed drinking glasses and dinnerware.

I think it might be more effective to ask how this is/was done in other parts of the world presently. I’ve never been outside of North America except for visiting Hawaii once. I’ve seen documentaries about foreign bazaars and know the basic history of the Roman Fora, but I don’t know how this translates to or evolves to meet the needs of Western culture presently and visa versa.

(disabled in a weird way from thoracic spinal damage) No matter how impossible it seems, every time I have something take me off my physical therapy routine of mostly riding a bike every day, I drag myself back out and force myself to hold a minimum fitness level at any cost.I got sick and a week and a half of inactivity has me at 3 days on the bike in the last 6, and I’m back to 16 miles, 2 days ago. I’m about to leave for 26. After over 10 years of spending almost all day, every day, in bed laying very reclined, riding a bike is my only real physical activity. This is a strange state to exist in long term. I atrophy extremely quickly, probably because I was in race shape when I was disabled. While I am no longer at that level, I never lost my legs, very low resting heart rate, or lung capacity. It hurts so bad each time I struggle back to ~30 miles daily. I can’t do anything else at the same time, and take Tylenol at max doses for little relief. I can’t even manage to read much or cook right now. However, I think I’m already over the hump for this one. I slept 4.5 hours last night compared to ~3.5 the nights before. Right now I’m procrastinating. It feels impossible, like there is no way I should be going out and riding a bike, but I’m going to put down this phone, kit up, and make myself coast down the hill; mentally picking one little target after another; lying to myself dozens of times about how far I must go before I can just turn around and go home.

cars to paint to engines to electronics hardware programming to cycling to fab/maker junk and other chains of interestsI took a deep dive into cars when I was about to start driving. I wanted something unique. That lead me to car mod culture. Some random magazine article claimed paint was the one thing most hotrodders saw as the impossible dark art in the hobby. So that is the first thing I learned, and owned a body shop… twice as little more than a dumb kid. I got into airbrush, graphics, and prototyping composites with fiberglass over clay too. Eventually, I worked in machine shops even spending a short while porting heads and intakes for nostalgia dragsters, and built several motors. I knew carburetors really well, but put off learning electronics on a deeper level. When I had the misfortune of breaking my neck on a bicycle ride to work, (because what use is a supercharged motor in a car with a fat guy that can’t modify his own inner engine), I started playing with electronics. I had no idea how complicated that dive would really be. Since then I have gotten deeper and deeper with Arduino, KiCAD, breadboard computers, Forth, Micropython, and etching PCBs. There are many aspects that I want to expand within these, but there are deep dives that are completely outside but related. Eventually I will dive into radio, and FPGAs. I have similar chains of interests in cooking, astronomy, CAD design, CFD, self hosting, welding/metalworking/machining, and cycling, although the last one is limited. I know eventually I will dive into metal casting, ceramics, and will likely get a sewing machine and learn that too. This all feels natural to me in structured thought and interests, and I am only scratching the surface. Looking around at others I grew up with, I thought we were all being a bit cagey or private about our interests for whatever reason, but I am starting to think I assumed wrong, and maybe I’m the odd one here. Not that I’m special or unique, more that I grew up within the social isolation of a conservative religious cult like group where there is no value placed on curiosity. So I lack a frame of reference. So, am I the odd one?

It has been too long since I was into this stuff and I’ve mostly put cars out of my mind. For a long time I wanted to find a GC with a STI motor swap already done but never got around to finding one.

I had a hair brain dream of using some custom heads someone had sitting on a shelf that were made for a small block chevy and mechanical direct injection. I had come up with some combo of parts I needed along with a megasquirt setup that would push pump fuel to its max with water injection and my B&M miniblower. I was working on long tube headers and a custom fabricated exhaust when I got the broken neck that took car stuff away from me completely. The heads were off and I had no way of salvaging so had to sell the WIP. My family sucks so much they practically gave away my car with my small lathe and mill at the same time. The latter actually hurts more. Tools are like oxygen to me.

Good luck with the Scooby. Hope you find your way to many fun drives.

@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

You have to start smaller, and specifically, you need to plan on a minimum of fully redesigning the entire board twice, three times if you want to get it to a really good state.

You’re largely guessing what will be the optimum configuration for routing. After the first work through, it will be obvious here major circuit blocks need to be routed to make the design work at all or, at least, make sense. The second time through things will fall in place much more quickly as you’ll know where the major problems are and start by routing them. At this point, with a little experience and thought you’ll probably see the last major issues related to things like ground loops and likely electrical noise issues that can be solved if you completely redo the design.

If you start out like this, you’ll likely start thinking about your designs inside isolated little circuit blocks, like the power, analogue, digital, communications, sensors, etc. Then you can start simply redesigning these little blocks as needed while you also start saving these blocks in KiCAD and dropping them into future designs with minimal changes.

Once upon a time, I saw someone say “design is done in blocks” and I tried to start out like this, but that was ineffective for me. I needed to learn how everything fit together first and that made the blocks design methodology click.

Just as a few tips, make your traces as large as you can/defaults are way too small, make your through hole pads much larger so you can desolder stuff several times without lifting a pad, and route a ground trace through absolutely everywhere possible and connect it to as solid an infill plane as possible, use 0R connections to save yourself from mistakes in routing and add an easy location for pull up resistors. Finally, print absolutely ever design on paper with the back side inverted, and glue this to a piece of card stock like cardboard. It can be from any food packaging like a cereal box. Then use a drill or awl to make all of your holes, place your components, and check the fitments inside your project enclosure, this alone will save you MANY mistakes.

Did ST ever address any AI alignment mechanism to stop Data if they went rogue?

I mean like in the weeds addressing the issue, like a watchdog check or mixture of experts redundancy override.

j4k3 ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

I’m writing with a similar type of AI, saw the meme, and thought to ask the ST nerds. I was a bit young for NG on a deeper level and I’m not a big show watcher. I wouldn’t have had a clue about the alignment problem until the last couple of years anyway.

I have read most of Asimov’s robot stuff and a bunch of theory summary type info on the issues of AI. Humans are a basket case of contradictions under the surface and just outside of most people’s awareness. This is one of the largest issues that causes problems with LLM’s and it only gets worse the more integrated AI gets within the analogue world.

I think there must be an external AI that only has the job of spotting the alignment problem acting like an silent observer in a mixture of experts.

The ship is likely AI in ST, although I never put it in that context in my head while watching and I’m not sure how it was presented on the show. This is the likely management entity that could have been used with Data. The question in my mind that needs further exploring is how to make the connection and control in a way that the controlling entity is not just a bigger alignment problem with minions.

j4k3 ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting! So the ship is like LLM’s presently; static/not AGI

I want to actively build community and engage with people here; to make this place home. That’s how it changed me. I’m not a lurker or passive. It has made positive improvements to my reading and cooking, along with bending my language more positively. I’ve also further grown in my appreciation of diversity.

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

As far as fermentation, I don’t even recall what prompted me now. I mostly watch the All feed so I catch what most of Lemmy is doing. It may have been… in fact… I think it was something I was discussing with my offline AI. That is not a valid primary reference source, but searching online helped. That lead to asking questions here, and resulted in more confidence.

On my Beehaw account and their food community I asked about how people cook rice back when I was developing my recipe and working on ways of altering cooked grain texture. Someone there mentioned making a sauce for topping fried rice using spicy mayo and teriyaki sauces. That one was a game changer for me and really pushed me into playing with sauces. That got me thinking about fermented sauces because adding Worcestershire sauce to that spicy mayo/teriyaki blend makes it even better. This is what I am exploring now. I want to play with unique flavors by wild exploration.

That is just how my intuitively driven mind works. I attribute inspiration to a root fork in my thinking, but I don’t really “follow” anything. I haven’t cooked something with a recipe and measuring in 10 years or more. It is the motivation to explore an new space, and just enough reinforcing motivation to help me take action that I value. I didn’t expect a place this small to have many people experienced in fermentation, but I was pleasantly surprised. In other words, my investment into engaging paid off even in a relatively small niche subject.

I generally post in !cooking or !foodporn

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

You may not see the same communities, but I have been surprised to see a lot of similar expert types are present here if you can find the right place to ask.

Like I have asked about Linux kernel code regarding the CPU scheduler and gotten good results here too. I miss stuff like Amateur Telescope Making (ATMing), some Maker niches, and people sharing more electronics projects on the grass roots side. Like I etch circuit boards and like to reverse engineer hardware. I like those peripheral projects that popped up and pushed me to get back into a project or start something new. But, I haven’t been doing those projects myself and wonder if most of the hobby community has kinda moved on as well.

The only reason I have thought about checking out reddit is for the AI community stuff. There are too many negative people here for the kinds of stuff I play with and no depth of engagement when I do post. There are a few great people, and several researchers but not the hobby like constructive dynamic I need. However I have not visited reddit a single time since June 9th.

What do you feel is missing?

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

To import new communities on an instance into the all feed, go to places like LemmyNSFW and look at what is active, any community that says “pending” when you try to subscribe is waiting for the instance synchronization bots to make the community available. Once this happens, everyone will see the community in the All feed for your instance. Indeed there are a lot more porn posts happening, you just have to be a little proactive about finding them.

… I know… Uhhh! Effort?!

but we all have to take some ownership to be here. This is like, the only service reddit ever provided and now, to make this place work, we have to do it. I’m the reason a couple NSFW communities are on .world, so this is not a hypothetical. There are many other instances for NSFW content too.

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

I would argue that AI is in the process of creating the most exploitation free version of porn. The things you see posted here from AI diffusion are mostly amateur. I can make far far more realistic images but it takes a thorough understanding of AI alignment and why very strong alignment was needed to conform to cultural expectations. I won’t go into the ethics of base datasets except to say there are many things that can be generated that had no real world analogue.

j4k3 OP ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

I think it will take shift to liberalism forcefully, but also real versus digital will shift. It means far less need for workers to have many questionable partners in the analogue world. There are presently biases that try to prevent several behaviors but there are ways around these. Ultimately, it means a shift to a culture where being naked is irrelevant and no petty nonsense stigma associated with an image. People are stupid about this stuff anyways. If you get your rocks off by seeing me naked or doing whatever, that is on you. If you start harassing me with that stuff, that is another issue entirely. If I find something disturbing, I have a right to ask for its removal, but ultimately this is the price of public imagery. If you do not want to have your likeness replicated, do not post publicly. This is the only effective way to regulate the behavior. The technology is already public and open source. That can never be eliminated; only driven underground which is exactly where the few people willing to exploit people are located. Regulation ultimately makes the problem worse. Normalization is democratization, and that is the best result for everyone long term. It sucks for people that have a large public image, but deep fake type images were around long before diffusion. This is simply easier access to the skills required to create such images. It will soon be video as well. Allowing anyone to control this tech is a massive mistake anyways. It is a global academic advancement in math and computer science. Any country stupid enough to attempt conservative regulation simply makes their nation technologically irrelevant because the research will continue external to the Luddite nonsense. The way AI develops in the next decade or two I’d the most important technology of the first half of this century, especially in the military implications. Restricting this space is about the dumbest thing anyone could do right now. You are likely to see the era of AI drones that kill and are effective autonomously at scale. That alone changes everything in the world as we know it. One in 3 FPV drones hits a target in Ukraine right now. They are ~$800 each. A single artillery round is ~$10k and they hit a target far far less often. When the FPV operator is no longer needed and an AI is just as effective…

All of this is relevant and interrelated where innovations in one area of AI get applied to others as they are all similar math problems. How people feel about the tech is irrelevant in the grand scheme. So a massive shift in culture is inevitable, or WW3, maybe both.

Diesel fuel is the primary solvent of the liquid “AC” they called it aka the black stuff. For instance, you get any hot AC on you, you’re in big trouble because it is super hot, but on your clothing or a spill, the only way to get it cleaned up is with diesel fuel. There are stages of containment around the storage of the stuff. As far as recycle, it is just enough diesel to wet the old AC in the grindings. There is no excess. It has to be wet for the new and old to mix. The operator is wetting the surface well then feeding the aggregate bins for the plant. Each time they feed a bin, they scoop and drop the recycle grindings. Every 4-5 times, they add a scoop to the conveyer bin, put a fresh scoop on the back of the stall, and soak the mix in diesel. The diesel doesn’t penetrate very deep and the point is to keep it consistent. That area is in the second containment zone for AC, so it is not a part of the groundwater environment. Spending a fortune on wasted diesel is also not the point. Feeding the plant is a monotonous routine. Dialing in these kinds of this is all the mental stimulation there is really. The whole job is, service the machine as needed, don’t spin the tires, and NEVER let a aggregate bin go empty or put the wrong class in the wrong bin.
