Anyone have experience with a HP Omen laptop recently?

Looking at a referb Omen with a Ryzen 5600 with a RX 6600m 8gbv bc it’s far more affordable than Linux specific options $900 vs ~$2500, and none of the Linux sellers appear to have a good all AMD option. I have a rework station for hobby electronics. Referb doesn’t bother me. I’ve had 3 HP’s in a row and every newer...

Why is the most popular computer os closed source while the most popular mobile os is open source?

I don’t understand why Google didn’t just made Android closed source. They would’ve made custom roms impossible and therefore more able to control and spy on it’s users. Why did Google made Android open source, while Microsoft’s Windows is still closed source to this day?

This is extremely subjective. Windows has a far smaller total market share in total devices. Its perceived dominance is an illusion. Windows is designed to monetize software to exploit the end user. There is a ton of effort that goes into keeping people in a little echo chamber surrounding Windows, but it is mostly a facade.

Android is another sketchy thing. Many parts of it are open source but many are not. All of the google framework and apps are proprietary. Google also undermines the Linux kernel to provide a stripped down version that hardware manufacturers can add their proprietary code into at the last possible moment. This lets them manipulate the end user by depreciating the devices whenever they want because the code needed to support the devices is not submitted into the mainline kernel. No one updates or maintains the kernel running on these devices and this is why they become obsolete.

The only reason proprietary software or hardware exists is to steal ownership from the end user. There is no other reason whatsoever. Everything proprietary is criminal exploitation and theft of ownership.

Are there really that many terrible drivers out there?

I see so many YouTube videos of people running blatantly red lights and getting in accidents or other videos of people stopped and gunning it backwards, hitting something, then they put it in drive and launch full speed forwards and hit something else. What is going through these peoples mind? I just don’t get how there is...

As a hardcore roadie that spent years commuting almost exclusively in Southern California, including 2 years of a 66 mile per day commute to a full time job. It feels like somewhere around one in a hundred passing drivers are lethally incompetent, and around one in a thousand are actively homicidal.

If there are 8B people on Earth, and only 0.01% are crazy, there are 80M crazy people. Nearly everyone has a camera on them at all times now. That’s a lot of potential to record these situations.

OP - use Post Image to host and only post the links to Lemmy, especially on .ml where the server is (IIRC) someone’s self hosted system. Uploading to Post Image is just like old skool imgur before it became trackerware junk. Once uploaded, open the image itself in a new tab in the browser to be sure you have the full size raw image URL. Then paste this into the post. You can even do this after posting something like this post in an edit too. If you want to post a linked image into the body of a post or in a comment, the syntax is:

image

Leave the “image” text in the brackets alone.

This extra step for external image hosting will reduce the load on all instances, and the image will load much faster for users, avoiding most confusion about this being a meme when you posted it in Linux instead of Linux-memes.

Your home instance has a big impact on what you can see. It is something of an uphill struggle coming from a smaller instance if others have not already found communities elsewhere. IIRC, you may not be able to subscribe to many unless you first try to post a message to them. This establishes the connection between instances/communities if no one else has already made the connection on your instance. It was a question that came up on .world a lot back when Lemmy was just a few thousand total users, but it is not something I have had to do. I have accounts on other instances that have defederated or that I want to separate interaction from. There is nothing wrong with having accounts elsewhere. If you just use a mobile browser and save login creds it is easy to use several accounts at the same time. I know this seems crazy, to go back to a browser based existence, but the fediverse is not trying to make browsers difficult in order to funnel people onto a stalkerware app. It works quite well.

lemmy.world doesn't seem to have many established NSFW communities; they appear to be in separate instances. Is there any benefit to this or anything stopping lemmy.world from having NSFW communities?

This may be more of an “out of the loop” thing, but I’m new to this site and I’m noticing that lemmy.world seems surprisingly bereft of any substantial NSFW content. I’m surprised! Isn’t the adage that porn motivates technological progress?...

Funny thing is that AI tech is turning NSFW into one of the best starting points and introductions to the subject. I’m all for separating it, but the separation turns out to have its own complexities. After messing with some of the tools, a large chunk of NSFW is from Stable Diffusion. There are certain aspects that are hard to generate and only really apparent with some practice writing prompts. It is far easier to quantify the types of issues that arise from bad prompts using a human body where we are much better equip to detect very subtle mistakes at a glace once we know where to look. It is an easy path into using SD for other endeavors. Admittedly, it ruins a bit of the primal appeal, and totally flips the subject where you’re then browsing looking for clever prompting. Funny thing is, the like count often correlates with prompt cleverness rather than output. It is the primary driver of engagement.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stable_Diffusion

This has the most basic guide to what is happening if you wish to crawl out from under that rock. It includes a built in SFW text to image prompt:

stable-diffusion-art.com/beginners-guide/

All one has to do is look at the NSFW images marked as being from AI and note the watermark to find where to generate images. Once you make a few, you’ll see small problems that are present in many other image categories. The main issues have to do with excluding certain prompt key words to make the output look real, then stuff like genitalia is not easy to get dialed in well unless you are running the software on your own hardware. This requires a powerful video card to generate the images and a lot of storage space. Once you know this a lot of images become obviously AI generated. There are aspects of lighting, eyes, fingers and toes, easy lighting text prompts and other small details that are harder to avoid in the image output. These start to stand out more once you know.

This tech is moving very fast right now. The next iteration of Stable Diffusion is set to release this month and it will likely make it impossible to tell what is real and what is fake. Right now SD must start with a low res image, then it can be scaled higher. SDXL will be able to start with a high res image and modify details which has not been possible. With a bit of effort, it will be possible to modify video frame by frame and use a simple text prompt to alter details. I doubt people will do more than clips at first, but with some good scripting using Blender, I could see it working for larger projects.

Follow the second posted link. And read it. This is FOSS. Combine this with an open source text to text LLVM running on native hardware and you have a real game changing set of technology.

Pixel and Graphene OS are the only combo that exists any more IMO. You can take full ownership over yourself again. I’ve bought two in a row just for this combo after having every other Samy S Flag from 3-9. I’ll never go back or to the fruit. I am not a slave to my device’s bloatware and no one is stalking me recording everything I do and say 24/7 like when a phone has google services garbage baked in. I could run that stuff sandbox on Graphene if I wanted to but F that. I don’t need or want that trash.

"The Great Brain Drain" is complete.

It's over. Feels like losing an old friend. Let's morn the loss of our old community for a few days, remember that best of post and conversations, and more forward. This was our Summer "Eternal September" moment. Make this new home vibrant, share you passions, make closer friends, and keep coming back. Things are weird, so is...

Doesn’t take long to get over that redd slut. I’ve been here on .world since 1.21k total users on the 9th. I haven’t touched old redd ever since. Every time I see results show up in a search, it’s like an annoying text message after leaving that cheating whore. Ive got more self-respect than any fool that responds to such nonsense. Once a cheating whore; always a cheating whore, as far as I am concerned. Welcome to the next chapter of the internet.

To really blow your mind, the Moon is slowly moving away, but will never escape. Eventually both the Earth and the Moon will become tidally locked to each other at which point the Moon will no longer move further away. This assumes no outside influences and enough time.

I’d like a phone with no camera facing me, and physical hardware switches to completely disable the mic, camera, battery, and entire modem. Not some software interrupt and lock. I mean, the switch is circuit ground for these circuit blocks. When I select OFF, it means real world “this thing does not exist any more ever” until I turn it back on.

It would be interesting to have a modular rear camera with a removable lens, removable IR filter, along with public documentation and the full API for the sensor. This would open up an enormous range of applications. I would mostly mess with astrophotography more.

@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

The silicon could go on for decades if both the modem and processor were fully documented hardware that the community can access and support in the Linux kernel.

I can run a secure and current form of Linux on 30+ year old hardware if I want to, because the hardware documentation was expected by everyone at the time even if some end users were oblivious to what this meant. The whole reason google pushes Android is because they provide a base Linux kernel that hardware manufacturers can easily slip their proprietary junk into without requiring them to add the kind of open source code needed for mainline kernel support by the community. This is the mechanism that depreciates your device. It is totally artificial and an end user exploitation by design.

There are no electrolytics in phones, and most newer phones don’t even have tantalums. So long as there are no flexing stresses induced, which is nearly impossible with the way phones are constructed now, the all MLC capacitors construction has the potential to outlast any PC motherboard or laptop by a large margin.

The most critical issue is board connectors and moisture ingress. The USB-C connector or any other high pin density micro sized connector with a tiny pin pitch, and large electrical potential will fail from charge cycling and a resistance forming between pins. USB-C is particularly bad because reversing the connector doubles the number of pins on the board in a ridiculous amount of space. Just using a standard USB-C connector when ordering a prototype to be fabed at any common board house will double the price. The USB-C pin pitch is too tight for the most common fab process resolution.

Only change the imageURL part

I have to type escapes for the first 2 elements to be able to display them visually, so if you see them because of differences in markup you know why.

This is a screenshot of the official documentation hosted externally:

This is with escapes to display what I used above:

Lol. I’m on Graphene OS so all the imgur trackers are blocked and I can’t see anything from them.

FYI this website has the simple functionality imgur used to have before they started all the trackerware nonsense:
