What an incredibly kind move by the Terraria developers. This is part of why Terraria is awesome!

ipkpjersi ,

I love how they keep saying they will have a final update, and then they just keep updating it regardless. It’s really impressive.

ipkpjersi ,

It’s not corporate politics if it’s going to have an effect on the end users. You’d be surprised at how big of an impact this will have, if they don’t backpedal this and cancel it entirely, and even if they do it could still an impact.

ipkpjersi ,

Except it becomes your problem if beer suddenly starts getting priced higher and higher and higher over time to the point where you can’t afford it anymore?

ipkpjersi ,

I play on my Android phone and I honestly love being able to just install the APK once, or even just install the emulator from like the Play store.

Pokemon is like the perfect game to play on phones though, HG/SS is my fav Pokemon game in the series and it has a bunch of cool custom ROM versions too. Pokemon games just play so well on phones.

ipkpjersi ,

DraStic is currently the best but MelonDS is very good too.

ipkpjersi ,

YESSSSSSS I was missing that so much! Thank you for bringing that back lmao I was not expecting it at all.

ipkpjersi ,

Lemmy UI and Jerboa seem to work well for me and they are both open-source.

ipkpjersi ,

That’s the horrible thing about online services. You never really own it, it can be taken away from you at any time. If you want to preserve something, you need physical and/or offline access.

ipkpjersi ,

As long as you are very serious about your backup system, digital can outlast physical.

ipkpjersi ,

I feel proud of myself that I left that sinking website, never to return. It always sucks when CEOs have their heads stuck so far up their own asses.

ipkpjersi ,

Same here which is great for me because I love older games lol

ipkpjersi ,

I wish my industry had unions lol

ipkpjersi , (edited )

That’s true, but it’s easier said than done. As someone who already experienced job loss once this year, I’m not looking to go through with it again. I have to look out for myself and my family first, unfortunately.

ipkpjersi ,

Yep, a lot of companies will make shit up to make people feel bad for them, and to try to make themselves seem like the victims in all of this while hiding the real victims when they are the abusers.

It’s honestly fucking disgusting behaviour, it makes me sick.

Malicious Google Search Ads can now fake the displayed URL to push malware downloads (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

Most people know at this point that when searching for a popular software package to download, you should be very careful to avoid clicking on any of the search ads that appear, as this has become an extremely common vector for distributing malware to unsuspecting users....

ipkpjersi ,

Yeah seriously, they can and should have a team dedicated to approving ads.

ipkpjersi ,

It probably is a crime, but large corporations don’t have to care about crimes because they can just pay the fines and be on their way like nothing happened. It’s no more of an inconvenience to them than just a small mosquito landing on them.

ipkpjersi ,

I think there’s a difference between scummy ads like false advertising which is obviously bad, and downright malicious software which it sounds like the ad OP is talking about serves actual malware.

ipkpjersi ,

Most images on the internet are way under a MB, is there really that important to lower it slightly?

It’s because companies always want to include 100 or 200 or 1000 pictures, because of all the products they are selling, they want to sell them all and right away.

It’s dumb, I hate it. lol

ipkpjersi ,

We have that, it’s called a fridge, and then there’s a freezer for making things frozen.

ipkpjersi ,

Yeah, seriously lol

ipkpjersi ,

It’s true, there are a decent number of shitting memes on Lemmy lol

ipkpjersi ,

Good enough for me. lol

Needs a bit more anime though, if I’m being honest.

ipkpjersi ,

Just buy a house 4Head

ipkpjersi ,

First time home buyers programs pay your full down-payment for you? lol

Shitty peers are what make websites like Lemmy and formerly Reddit great.

The Batshit Crazy Story Of The Day Elon Musk Decided To Personally Rip Servers Out Of A Sacramento Data Center (www.techdirt.com)

Back on Christmas Eve of last year there were some reports that Elon Musk was in the process of shutting down Twitter’s Sacramento data center. In that article, a number of ex-Twitter employees wer…

ipkpjersi ,

I can’t imagine how annoying that would be. Companies with family members as employees, especially startups, are the WORST and most toxic you can get.

ipkpjersi ,

I work as a website developer and I think number one is so, so much more likely. The average person barely knows how to use a computer at all, let alone how it works and different terminology.

An older, non-IT person - an actual judge, yeah I’m not giving them the benefit of the doubt here - they likely don’t know lol

ipkpjersi ,

It’s because these things work by probabilities. Generally when you think of older people who aren’t working as IT professionals, you wouldn’t expect them to be great with computers - and you’d probably be right.

Do you really think that a judge that taught himself to code would be common-place and would be the norm? That judge is awesome, but he is very clearly an outlier lol

ipkpjersi ,

I really don’t mean to be rude however I don’t think there’s any polite sounding way of asking this, have you worked in IT? You would be surprised how many lawyers, doctors, etc all kinds of genius professionals absolutely do not know how computers work, and even who don’t care to learn them.

ipkpjersi ,

I agree, that’s a decent point, but I have a counterpoint. I think with sheer numbers alone, especially when it comes to the context of computers would give more accurate results even if they could be somewhat biased. A larger sample size is more likely to give a more accurate idea of a picture of what’s going on. I also think if you compare an IT person, versus a non-IT person, the IT person is going to be able to identify Firefox being a search engine or a browser 10 times out of 10 lol, whereas with a non-IT person, those numbers could be anywhere except for 10/10, most likely anyway. lol

Boeing is letting top executives work in small offices near their homes and commute by private jet rather than relocate to its new headquarters::Top brass at the aerospace giants, including CEO David Calhoun, are given special treatment when it comes to any return-to-office policy.

Anti Piracy VP Says "Any Device" That Can Be Used To Infringe IP Should Be Made Illegal (reclaimthenet.org)

The ongoing and often extreme and overreaching battle against piracy within the audiovisual industry continues to escalate, with recent discussions focusing on devices capable of infringing intellectual property (IP) rights. As stated by Sheila Cassells, Executive VP at the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAPA), companies in...

ipkpjersi ,

So computers and phones should be banned too then? These people are absolutely clowns lmao

ipkpjersi ,

I kind of disagree. Applications often require root permissions to install themselves, since regular users can’t access certain folders like /opt, etc.

Also, do you really think that people would actually read the source and then compile all their software themselves? Do you do the same?

Generally though I do agree, you’re probably fine installing software from your distro’s repos but even that’s not bulletproof and also it’s not like third-party repos are uncommon either.

ipkpjersi ,

I feel like development of Lemmy has slowed the past few weeks too. I’ve been following plenty of issues on GitHub both on the front-end and back-end, and there just hasn’t been any progress on them. It’s a shame because Lemmy has so much potential, but I’m with you I just don’t think it will take off. With that said, obviously I will keep using it, and I’m not going back to reddit. It’s a shame because I really do miss the smaller niche communities on reddit but reddit is dead to me now because the CEO is really quite the dickhead and I refuse to go back.

ipkpjersi , (edited )

That’s one of the biggest problems with Lemmy vs reddit. Lemmy still hasn’t quite perfected sorting, and it hurts Lemmy quite a bit.

The sorting is way, way, way too fixed and inflexible. You can sort by active which ends up being the same few communities. Hot is too much like it’s kinda new. Top Day is usually what I use since I want to see the most popular posts first each day, but then more niche content is just hidden. There is no best sorting order, because the best sorting order would be a combination of multiple sorting orders. This is one thing reddit really excels at with their sorting orders, they seem to have like a “combined” approach, like an intelligently-designed system of sorting algorithms to show people good, active content while not hiding important things.

On a community/platform like Lemmy where it’s less popular and less active, having proper sorting is even more important.

This is entirely fixable, and something Lemmy definitely can improve. The question is, will they improve it? I certainly hope so.

ipkpjersi ,

This is true but aren’t the two main Lemmy devs paid to work on this full-time? That’s something at least, it’s better than being truly unpaid to work on this.

ipkpjersi ,

Do we know for sure that the Starfield devs weren’t able to figure out the problems with performance? I find often with companies, the larger they are, the more bureaucracy there is, and the more prioritization of tickets becomes this huge deal, where you even end up having meetings about how to prioritize tickets etc.

I would be surprised if the devs didn’t know what was wrong already, I think it’s more likely that management and higherups doesn’t care about them fixing it right now.

ipkpjersi ,

Caving seems like one of those things where while it’s one of the coolest things ever, I also don’t think I would ever want to go in a cave ever in my entire life. It just seems to risky, even for professionals, and it seems like there are so many unexpected variables when it comes to caving that can be completely out of your control.

ipkpjersi ,

With a seedbox plus freeleech torrents and bonus points you generally don’t even need to worry about ratio and all of that. Plus, it feels good to give back to the community.

ipkpjersi ,

Trackers with open sign-ups are a good place to get started, also trackers with application forms are good for starting out too. If you have friends who are into private trackers and they know you are trustworthy and they have invites, that’s another way.

ipkpjersi ,

I wouldn’t worry about it, not everyone can have good Internet. You’re doing what you can and that’s okay.

Some people like to rent a seedbox because of this, that way they can download and upload torrents very quickly, especially on private trackers.
