7 full years of OS updates sounds pretty promising. Swap out the battery a few years in and this phone could last a while yet. Pretty impressive.

Amazon reportedly used a secret algorithm to jack up prices — A new report details Amazon’s Project Nessie pricing algorithm::Amazon deployed a secret algorithm to gauge how high it could raise prices before its competitors stopped increasing their prices as well.

ipkpjersi ,

You should check out CamelCamelCamel or Keepa, it has Amazon price history.

ipkpjersi ,

Oh my god that’s horrible and kind of funny even though it’s super fucked up.

ipkpjersi ,

Yeah it’s kind of wild to me the number of people that think teachers having guns is a good idea, that way teachers can get into a shootout with students that go crazy. Absolutely insane.

ipkpjersi ,

Our planet is on fire. This is literally the this is fine meme.

ipkpjersi ,

I got pretty lucky that 1) my usernames have all been pretty tame if a bit boring and 2) I never published anything horrible under my IRL name

ipkpjersi , (edited )

I do find that interesting all your jobs use the same name format. My jobs have all had different formats lol

One was first initial last name, one was last name first initial (same as my school), my current one is just first name which is cool because if there are any other people who come here later I will be the original one lol, etc

Also my second job had four people with the same name as me, but one of them was much older and died while I was still working there, then I left a year later so then they were down to two. lol

ipkpjersi ,

I mean… yeah? That’s one of the main reasons why you want to have your own Plex (or, Jellyfin) library, that way you control what media you have and it can’t be taken away from you at any second.

ipkpjersi ,

I’m so glad my last two jobs have been fully remote. I can’t imagine working in an office again and I’m grateful I don’t have to. Most of my friends are still working remotely too which is kinda cool.

ipkpjersi ,

Good news, this meme is actually from 3 years ago.

ipkpjersi ,

You’d be surprised how many times “good enough” is considered “good enough” when it comes to IT and security, even when it’s really the bare minimum.

ipkpjersi ,

It’s funny how I can recognize other programmers just from how they speak lol

ipkpjersi ,

That honestly happens to me with Linux, and it’s kind of sad. I reach out to my friends for help with Linux when I realize wait a second, I’m supposed to be the Linux expert here. That’s when I know I’m really fucked lol

ipkpjersi ,

Jellyfin feels like it’s 95% of the way there. I switched from Plex to Jellyfin back to Plex again a year or two ago, but I am thinking I should give Jellyfin another shot some time. There was some media that Jellyfin wasn’t able to play even without transcoding that Plex handled fine, but those transcoding issues could be solved by now.

ipkpjersi ,

I like Reaper and LMMS personally but more competition is always good.

ipkpjersi ,

I mean it’s not the most powerful DAW out there but it was fine for what I was doing.

Weak IP Address Evidence Collapses 'Non-Responsive Movie Pirates' Lawsuit TorrentFreak (torrentfreak.com)

ipkpjersi ,

Also, on top of that, there’s a cap on copyright infringement at $5k per person for non-commercial piracy IIRC, rather than being like unlimited in USA.

ipkpjersi , (edited )

Your friends can still see you bought it/own it in the first place, unless you have that set to private, in which case you can’t look up your own CSGO/CS2 stats etc. The privacy settings are unfortunately not very flexible.

ipkpjersi ,

4chan feels like it’s been around forever, wow, I actually used the Internet before 4chan was a thing. That’s kind of wild to think about.

ipkpjersi ,

I find that those people usually are the ones in charge.

ipkpjersi ,

By the time we actually make serious change, it will be far too late.

Optimistic of you to assume that we will ever make serious change.

ipkpjersi ,

I know I’m getting old because that sounds normal to me.

ipkpjersi ,

That couldn’t be any more accurate lmao I literally swing back and forth between dunning-kruger effect and imposter syndrome. It’s actually wild.

ipkpjersi ,

Crazy how fucked the economy has gotten pretty much everywhere lol

ipkpjersi ,

To some parents, all video games are Mario, and to others all video games are Pokemon lol

I mean, it kinda makes sense tho. Those games basically took over the world with how popular they are.

A lot of it depends on where you live and how high up you are in the company too. If you’re a VP or a director, your expectations and legal burdens and considerations are often different from Bob Joe programmer or Larry the phone guy.

For example, in my province, non-competes were banned a couple years ago. I started work with an employer a year prior to that ban, and they had a stealth non-compete in my contract, but basically the rest of the contract was unenforceable anyways.

As always, it’s worth learning your rights and seeking legal advice prior to signing any legal agreements like contracts.

ipkpjersi ,

I’ve yet to meet one that isn’t but I suppose it’s possible.

ipkpjersi ,

A few, surprisingly. These things tend to happen when you work higher up in a company as a programmer, especially with smaller to mid sized companies versus working for giant goliaths like Google or Facebook.

ipkpjersi ,

I mean it is kind of true. If you’re not going to be good to others you might as well be good to yourself. On the flip side of things, you should be good to yourself regardless because you need to look out for yourself first because after all there’s not very many people at all you can count on to have your best interests in mind.

ipkpjersi ,

It’s honestly the perfect use case for Lemmy too. It’s the kind of thing where decentralization is hugely helpful.

ipkpjersi ,

That’s fair except it’s not the only format that has this problem. There’s JPEG 2000 and AVIF which have even less image editor support.

ipkpjersi ,

Yep. Even if conventional ad blocker addons get “banned” or Chrome breaks them and forces that on the world, people are just going to block it at the OS or router level.

I mean they are notorious for having horrible working conditions even for developers lol

ipkpjersi ,

Depends on where you live. In some countries it wasn’t banned until the 80s, 90s, or even later.

All these users are suffering there but none of them seem to be considering…. Leaving

I think because they are uninformed. They are looking for alternatives, and don’t know about Lemmy, or don’t understand Lemmy, etc.

ipkpjersi ,

I’m honestly kind of loving watching the destruction of Reddit and Twitter. It is a big loss, sure, but like you said they are not irreplaceable. The communities, the people are what matters, not the platform. The people make the platforms. If you lose the people, you lose the platform.

If everyone migrates to Lemmy and Mastodon like I did, then these large platforms don’t have to matter anymore.

ipkpjersi ,

He is a world-class moron, no doubt about it.

Aren’t people on the left generally not religious though?

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

It’s beautiful and confusing even though I am a programmer lol

That honestly makes me kind of sad. Not even specifically the escorting part but just like… that seems like a small amount of money for that on the escort’s end. Like for example, I am pretty sure there are OF girls who sell nudes for that much lol

ipkpjersi ,

Ah shit, I’ve failed 1 and 2. I better not fail 3 then.

Sounds like there’s a bit more confirmation that Canada was actually correct and not making it up, since other international parties seem to have looked into it: tribuneindia.com/…/us-envoy-confirms-canada-recei…
