Someone give me a hard sell here! Why should I use this app? I used to use Instagram (photographer/cinematographer), and I stopped using it because not just the tracking and all of that, but frankly, the content itself. Not to mention the algorithms are so busted and all they do is show me rage bait or flagrant ads disguised as content I would actually care about.

Why do people like pixelfed?

Sounds great. How does sorting work on it? Is it just who you subscribe to and show what was the most recent?

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I mean, it’s different in a lot of very important ways. The way Lemmy sorts is incredibly transparent, one of the beauties of open source. It’s incredibly stripped down and you have a lot of control over what is in front of you. It isn’t deliberately opaque like Twitter et al. That almost always end up trying to make you angry to keep you engaged. There are not a lot of background algorithms and an army of white-collar employees with billions of dollars and decades of research at their fingertips trying to make sure you never look away from your screen. If you have an unhealthy relationship with social media, and you are on the fediverse, it’s a little more on you than it is on the instance/Admins/devs. People who are addicted to TikTok and other social media apps in a lot of ways are partially victims. How can we expect 15 year olds to be able to emotionally handle these sites that, once again, are spending billions of dollars over decades to learn how to manipulate us as much as possible?

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

says it's becoming like reddit/twitter.
says "both sides."

Yup sounds about right.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Honestly, Admins on instances need to be more generous with their ban hammers. It would probably help a lot. People have internalized a flawed notion of “protecting free-speech“ that allows people to be incredibly disruptive to communities in a very outsized way.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

And after three or four clicks, you’re immediately stumbling through horrible right wing ragebait

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I can’t speak for everyone else, but the only recommendations I want to see are ones directly relevant to the video I have pulled up in front of me. I can get why that is not exactly what everyone wants though.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

It’s pretty scummy behavior

Companies don’t even try to spin it anymore. There is no reason any of us need this.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Bless you AMD

AMD handles its version of CIP and Telemetry in arguably the most transparent manner. The installer of AMD Software Adrenalin presents the option to prevent its data-collection tool from being enabled at the completion of driver installation, regardless of whether you've chosen the "typical," "driver only," or "custom" install options. There's an entire page of the installer dedicated to this, you see a large checkbox about data-collection that's checked by default, but which you can uncheck, and complete installation.

Description here is fine but I feel I learned more about you and your politics than I did about the fediverse lol

Hell no but there’s a lot in between you’re pretending doesn’t exist. Children aren’t either satan or Jesus dude.

Nobody’s point is that the store should be a place of ecclesiastical silence.

I’ve seen some unhinged responses here that make me wonder how correct you are here.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Whatever man. Y’all have blown this way out of proportion. This thread is utterly bizarre to me. I’m done lol

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

every one I've been to has like 10ft wide aisles lol

Curious, how many users here actually use ActivityPub's capabilities to see other social media sites?

I’ve always wondered how many people actually decide to use something like mastodon to see Lemmy posts. I mean I know how inadequate it can be with a lack of a proper UI but I’m just wondering. Especially, with the infinite possibilities this can have.

That’s fair. I did come in a little hot, but I am just very tired of watching people casually throw around “pedophile.“ I understand that is not what you were doing, but this post set up a very specific situation that it looked like you were building on. I over interpreted your intention, and I apologize. Still, this post is total rage bait, and kind of messed up ultimately. It’s an absurd, shoehorned attempt to try and equate liberals with pedophiles. It should be removed frankly.

hoodatninja , (edited )
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I can see that you argue in good faith and I apologize for some reddit impulses that I haven’t unlearned yet.

You and me both man. Someone the other day said "that classic reddit performative snark" and fuck me if it didn't feel like I heard a gunshot. Looking through this thread I came pretty close to going full tilt that direction again. Still learning I suppose.

Personally I don’t see the equation of leftism with defending CP in OPs post though.

So I'm a little surprised to see this. The image explicitly says:

THE "LEFTIST"
No ethical consumption under capitalism. Legalize child porn NOW!" (bolding my own)

So the post to me is saying "leftists want to legalize child porn." With Vaush as a poster for all leftists. I do not see it as purely about Vaush anymore than i see the "Plants Rights Activist" commentary being about solely Joe Rogan (which funny enough is not even a stance I think he holds, but I dislike him and don't care to confirm lol).

Let me give another example: If I was making a meme and put "Conservatives [insert picture of George Bush above it]: Wants their steak bloody. Hates gay people." Would you say "ah this is just about George Bush" or would you see it as I see it, which is a statement about ALL conservatives with simply an image of one?

The images are just meant to accent the content, not be taken directly as the subject. Does that make sense?

@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Let me clarify because I can tell I implied too much and it just ended up not being communicated. That's on me.

My point is an issue with moderation. The simple fact is toxic behavior is allowed because mods/admins/etc. on forums tend to be too cautious with the ban hammers unless a rule is explicitly violated. If someone is disruptive to the community and constantly starting fights, even if they don't "break a rule on the side bar," the mods at /r/politics needed to just show them the door but never did. I don't know if it's a well meaning but misguided commitment to "Free Speech :TM:" or concern about the optics to the community or whatever, regardless if there is someone in your hen house riling up all the hens every day, it doesn't matter if they're a wolf or a hen. Kick them out.

At present I have not seen many admins with the stomach to enforce like that. But if we want to actually not be reddit all over again, that's what it will take. Beehaw I think has some decent ideas about how to handle this problem via defederation, and I think it's a real solution that needs to be explored more, but ultimately admins need to just kick people out when they're particularly toxic and disruptive.

The reason I mentioned the "stop the steal" crowd in particular is because 100% of the time it is just a horrible flame war the moment they pop in. Dozens of removed comments and just insults hurled everywhere.

BG3 baybee what other game is there!?

hoodatninja ,

I swear 40-50% of all dialogue, interactions, etc. reflect the character I built. It is insane. They made D&D into a video game. They actually did it.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

This comment is almost poetic lol

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

there isn’t a while lot of actual content on here.

I mean how many posts/threads do you really need a day? I read 10-15 or so. That's plenty

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I mean we all have our preferences, but I personally don't want to go back to my old habit of spending 2-3 hours a day on reddit and lying to myself about why I did it. I try to cap it at an hour on here a day at most.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Interesting! I actually have not subscribed to a ton of stuff yet, but I feel like I’m seeing more than enough per day. The actual comments/threads aren’t super populated necessarily, but frankly, I think that’s a good thing. It’s keeping me from doom scrolling and I’m not getting bogged down in arguments like I used to on Reddit.

Firefox is my go-to now. I just use Brave if i need a chromium browser. Privacy badger + adguard + little snitch mini + proton VPN as needed. Life's been good lol

With a lot of notable exceptions

Surprisingly, there is a whole slew of exempt special-purpose bulbs that will continue to be manufactured, according to the Energy Department. Here’s what manufacturers can still build and stores can continue selling:

Appliance lamps, including fridge and oven lights
Black lights
Bug lamps
Colored lamps
Infrared lamps
Left-handed thread lamps
Plant lights
Floodlights
Reflector lamps
Showcase lamps
Traffic signals
Some other specialty lights, including marine lamps and some odd-sized bulbs

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Funny to see that this was pushed under the Bush administration.

Don't you find it disappointing that people apply Herd Mentality for upvoting top comments, even if it's not the best one out there?

It doesn’t matter if the most upvoted comment is pro or against subject in discussion. All that matters is bolstering a comment that is minimally compatible with participant’s thinking and making it win against the opposite argument (competing and most voted one)....

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I don't understand why people get so angry at other instances for defederating. It's why the option exists. I fully support its usage. It's not like users are cut off from them, they can easily participate in both the defederat-or and defederat-ee's communities.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

Sorting by new ends up creating a group that just picks winners and losers for those who don't. Hence "the knights of new" with their disingenuous framing that they were doing a public service. All they were really doing, whether they knew it or not, was picking which snowballs get to roll and which don't.

Most, if not all, have to sort by new or it just trades issues.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

it’s way better than the alternative though, having no votes at all would encourage spam and low effort posting

Upvotes only, never show the results, never show people their "karma" count. Let the thread reflect the impact.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I did cite multiple pieces in my follow up comment because both of us were speaking in generalities.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

You don't need to stop blaming them because they deserve it. But I am saying this explanation is overly reductionist. If you completely removed the GOP from the equation and restored or even increased funding, universities would still have a huge widespread cost issue.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I have a feeling you aren't really reading what I'm writing anymore or at least are just skimming over it and then making your points, so I'm just going to call it a day here. I put some thought and effort into what I wrote and I was hoping you would as well given we are having a discussion. But based on this and your other comment, it's just degenerating into sarcastic quips that are becoming increasingly less relevant to the discussion.

Have a good one man.

hoodatninja , (edited )
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

I honestly am not interested in this discussion if you are going to alternate between generalizations and sound bites man. If you think it's the overwhelming problem then you need to provide sources. I feel I have demonstrated that I clearly get the GOP's role in this issue - it is substantial. Yet you seem to just blow through everything I write in a way that indicates you aren't really engaging with me at all or, frankly, reading what I'm writing.

I was down to have a discussion but this has become exhausting and repetitive, so again, have a wonderful day. Truly. I am not mad or being sarcastic with you. This just isn't productive anymore and I'd like to move on. I made my points and you can do with them what you will.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

We don't bat an eye at having tax-funded libraries (well the GOP is starting to...) because we have internalized as a society that they're a good thing. I have never understood why we can't do the same with schools.

hoodatninja ,
@hoodatninja@kbin.social avatar

It's been a week now and when you sort by active, surprise surprise, this is the top comment. Because literally no one uses this megathread, like a bunch of us predicted lol
