This is more of a support question, related to using Lemmy. Please see the sidebar for a list of communities that offer support. Removing under rule #3.

The domain, literally

Its like email. Gmail and yahoo mail talk to each other but have separate account databases and administrators. Both of these are general purpose instances so there isnt much difference. I think lemmy.ml is a little more left wing in its moderation.

Lemmy.world is run by Mastodon, while lemmy.ml is run by unapologetic socialists/communists.

One doesn’t really have a political focus while the other one has at least officially associated itself with such beliefs.

Thanks to the federated nature of lemmy, if you don’t like the way an instance is run you are free to go to another instance. If you want to be in an instance that will align with your beliefs, then you have that option as well. Isn’t it wonderful?

Lemmy.world is run by Mastodon

The admin(s) of lemmy.world also run mastodon.world (and calckey.world). Just as there are multiple lemmy servers, there are multiple Mastodon servers.

Description here is fine but I feel I learned more about you and your politics than I did about the fediverse lol

masterairmagic ,

One doesn’t really have a political focus while the other one has at least officially associated itself with such beliefs.

In my experience the admins of lemmy.world are much more aggressive in pushing their politics on their users. I left lemmy.world after they did this: lemmy.world/post/2498330

Also lemmy.world usually has trouble staying functional. Leaving it had other perks. For example, the link above wasn’t working as I was posting this, so here is the feddit.de cache of it: feddit.de/post/2073607?scrollToComments=true

What do communists and socialists have to apologize for? To be clear I know what you are hamfistedly referring to. But it isn’t “communists” or “socialists”.

If you want to learn a little bit more about Lemmy, this docs page on join-lemmy.org is a pretty good primer.

fubo ,

They’re two different sites run by two different groups of people, but they can exchange messages with each other.

Just like, say, Gmail and Hotmail.

Speeder172 OP ,

Mmhhh okay thanks. This is so weird to have the same design and being advertised by the automod on reddit Wellthatsuck

A cool thing about the fediverse, is that it’s a bit like e-mail. You can use lemmy.ml to talk with people on lemmy.word or sh.itjust.works or most of the hundred of less known lemmy instances

In real life, if you use most large instance you’ll see the same content. Some are defederated, for example some people don’t like the Tankie propaganda on Lemmygrad.ml and some instances have a jailbait porn section leading also to defederation.

Even better, if you want to interact occasionally with other federated service like CalcKey or peertube, it might be possible from another application. e.g. seeing Lemmy post on Mastodon

Ninja edit : That video can help you to understand the federation concept framatube.org/w/9dRFC6Ya11NCVeYKn8ZhiD

deweydecibel ,

This is only going to be true so long as defederation is restrained, but I’m getting the feeling that without some sort of oversight or shared rules and standards for defederation, and without neutrality, the place is going to fragment as certain admins just do whatever they like. There’s also the worrying emergence of shared block and defederation lists across instances, that have legitimate uses, but are going to cause chaos and allow certain admins to effectively gatekeep the majority of the Lemmy if there isn’t some standard they have to adhere to for what goes on it.

Ziggurat ,

I might be wrong, but I don’t have the impression it’s a big issue on Mastodon. But it’s definitely a risk, and so what reddit isn’t federated at all and still interesting

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

The idea is that there is no standards and you are able to choose your instance by the values that align closest to yours.

Yeah it’s federation.

A different domain (ex. .TV, .us., .gov, etc.) doesn’t always mean it’s the same site. I couldn’t find any notable cases (or court cases) but an example could be mylocalbusiness.de versuses mylocalbusiness.pt

In that situation I can create a website for my local business in Germany and not have to worry about an identically named business in Portugal potentially.

It is important to keep this in mind though because spoofing one website for malicious purposes is a real hazard.
