For me, it’s more that our species of primate’s general wellbeing and health was hijacked by a cancer-like abstract concept.

❤️

I need to get off my ass and do the same, they deserve all the support in the world right now.

gsfraley ,

Agreed. I’m sure if I was heads down in Excel for years beforehand it would be a significant downgrade, but as a casual user, making better use of some of the more advanced features became so, SO much easier with the Ribbon.

gsfraley ,

I’ve always been hugely in favor of it. It’s the one change that could maybe justify their gargantuan salaries – if your company causes harm and suffering, the leaders absolutely need to be put on the hook.

gsfraley ,

Same, Fedora’s my main driver at this point. It’s the only one that seems to support being close to the edge that well without instability. And I no longer have the patience or risk acceptance for Arch/-derived systems at this point, as much as I enjoy using them as a hobby and to preview the latest tech stacks.

Jesus Christ that’s basically uninhabitable for any extended period of time

I mean, they’re one implementor of about 10 that use the same container standards. It sucks that they were first so their name is now synonymous with containers a la Kleenex, but the technology itself is standard, very open and ubiquitous, and a huge step forward in simplifying deployments and development lifecycles that would otherwise be too complex to reasonably handle.

Hope you stopped at Peace, Love, & Little Donuts or De Fer while you were there! 😋

Luckily we here in America have much more encouraging and progressive viewpoints from people like our VP nominee Vance who said the purpose of “postmenopausal females” is to provide backup childcare.

Ukraine accuses Russian forces of killing, dismembering prisoner-of-war (www.reuters.com)

Ukraine’s human rights commissioner urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations to investigate an image widely shared online on Saturday that he said likely showed a Ukrainian prisoner-of-war killed and dismembered by Russian forces....

My insurance site (MyCigna) started working a couple months ago, but for years it failed to log in. It’s those types of contracted apps that seem to fail the most for me, like apps you’d see on a company intranet.

gsfraley ,

I think that’s the way both Splunk and JFrog work – you generate or enter a password into the key field in a YAML file somewhere, start the service, and next time you come back the field’s been encrypted.

It’s also one that’s unfortunately up for reconsideration after the Supreme Court overturned Chevron deference. That rule (as well as almost every other NLRB rule) could go away unless it is explicitly re-enshrined by Congress.

US blasts ‘aggressive’ China over South China Sea collision with Philippine ship (www.cnn.com)

The United States on Monday condemned China over a collision with the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea, the latest in a series of increasingly fraught confrontations that have raised the potential of a flashpoint for global conflict in the vital waterway....

Fuck, that’s infuriating. Is there any way to get them off the mod team?

Tsoukalos fired back with a lame schoolyard threat that probably didn’t help his cause, writing: “Tell me that to my face and let’s see what happens.”

I can’t think of the last time anyone actually said “say that to my face” without a hint of irony.

Because Putin trying and failing still results in genocide and millions dead, ya goof. A pyrrhic victory for the people trying to defend their home and defend their neighbors and loved ones is a helluva lot worse than if Russia never fucked with them in the first place.

most Linux systems don’t even use DHCP

WTF are you smoking? WTF is wrong with you that you think such a dumb claim would go unscrutinized? I would play Russian roulette on the chances of a random Linux installation on a random network talking DHCP.

Edit, in case being charitable helps: DNS and IP address allocation aren’t the only things that happen over DHCP. And even then the odds are overwhelming that those are being broadcast that way.

It’s more over-the-top and arcade-y. Things like volcanos exploding as you ride down the slopes and an indoor mall-like mountain in Tokyo with an air-lift you use to do laps. Note that it’s not free-ride, so there are pluses and minuses to it.

gsfraley ,

I can confirm both Pixels and Samsung phones have that feature (1/2/4 hours or indefinite). On my current phone (Samsung) you get the option by holding the DND button.

I was about to say. There’s a million concerns over environmental and economic effects (that I’ll own up to ignoring when visiting family or exploring), but safety is still wayyy down the list. The statistic about being 20x more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the airport than the flight itself still holds very firmly true (and I’m being SUPER conservative about those numbers in case recent events tilt it, it’s still a ~800x per-mile ratio).

gsfraley ,

Oh wait that’s a much safer term to describe those antics than what I’ve been using. I’ve always known it as “JAQing off” (just asking questions).

gsfraley ,

Exact same here. Totally fine with showing the pass from my phone, prefer it even. But the stakes are too high to skip the 5 minutes it takes to print a paper copy. I can almost guarantee that everyone else is one close call/missed flight away from doing the same thing, too.

gsfraley ,

Leonardo De Lima, who works in technology, was on his way to Boston Logan International Airport around 5 a.m. for a business trip to Chicago when he realized his phone was in SOS mode. He initially thought it was a problem with his device, until he got to the Delta terminal and saw a lot of confused faces.

“I heard people talking about the outage, and everyone was lingering in the departure area because nobody could pull up their tickets on their phones,” the 32-year-old said. “I saw a lot of stress.”

gsfraley ,

No, my phone went into SOS mode yesterday. No apps, just a button to call 911. And yes, if you lose a ticket, you can indeed miss a flight. Only tale I have for that is a colleague who lost their ticket and the time it took to look up their details put them past boarding, they were stranded at the terminal, but its still an actual risk you can’t wave away.

It takes 5 minutes to save an insane amount of stress and misfortune.

gsfraley ,

In case you’re missing it, this is what the Stephen King book and movie “Maximum Overdrive” is about, but technologically behind by 50 years. Radio signals and power surges just happen to influence machines all over the world into vengefully killing people.

gsfraley ,

I guess it comes down to the transition point. If they’ve adapted in that they’re resistant to cancer developing or spreading in general, that has implications on what can be done to make humans resistant. If instead they’ve adapted to be less likely to get cancer from radiation levels that high, it’s less useful, since most people generally aren’t exposed to those levels.

gsfraley ,

Ditto, I practically could’ve wrote that comment myself

gsfraley ,

Oof, and there’s only ten lines of code, too. And they look very purposefully written out.

gsfraley ,

Sure, but this is less than nothing. It literally applies 0 friction against AI and is completely and totally unenforceable. AND it’s a laughing stock for everyone and sucks the oxygen out of better AI regulation groups and think-tanks.

gsfraley ,

Luckily Google is here to save us. Just replace the word “save” with “screw”. Ad revenue over safety, always.

gsfraley ,

Are… are you simping for North Korea?

gsfraley ,

Kubernetes is fine because it’s easy to keep track of, it looks and pronounces similar to the real word.

O11y for “observability”, though, that one’s pretty rough. And people trying to make the pronunciation “ollie” make me see red.

Same with proof-of-concept and piece-of-crap!
