Lmao inasmuch as it includes space, FTL, and aliens… I guess…?

gravitas_deficiency ,

Oh, it’s worse than that.

Google’s “AI” results feed you things for 10 year old Reddit posts that are subtle (but sometimes, also not so subtle) bullshit.

Whatever they’re using to curate training data is evidently pretty awful at detecting shitposts.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Perfectly balanced. As all things should be.

You didn’t create this dragon, Google. We did. And we are weirder than you understand.

gravitas_deficiency , (edited )

Lmao no way

Edit:

Oh my god

More edit:

For real though: There is a possibility that this is the most epic instance of malicious compliance that has occurred in the history of tech. There is no way a competent engineer would think Reddit would be a good (a primary characteristic of which would be “relatively unpoisoned”) training set. It’s just not possible. This was 100% some business and finance yahoo saying “do the thing” and Eng saying “ok but you’re not going to like it”.

ChatGPT Answers Programming Questions Incorrectly 52% of the Time: Study (gizmodo.com)

The research from Purdue University, first spotted by news outlet Futurism, was presented earlier this month at the Computer-Human Interaction Conference in Hawaii and looked at 517 programming questions on Stack Overflow that were then fed to ChatGPT....

Holy fuck did it just pass the Turing test?

gravitas_deficiency ,

I’d just like to make the point that that is not normal.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Eh. The ICJ has zero enforcement authority, and is often very selectively ignored by tons of countries.

The result of this will be:

Israel: no.

ICJ: https://media2.giphy.com/media/t1wrTDwlu9ra0BoqZX/giphy.gif

Note that this is not a defense of Israel or an endorsement of the ongoing genocide they’re perpetrating. It’s merely a statement on how the ICJ is effectively toothless.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Ah yes, the Republicans will surely be more amenable to negotiating with the various labor organizations within our country in a civilized manner.

Ugh can we just agree that foldy phones are just an altogether dumb idea? I want my phone to have as few moving parts as possible.

It does seem pretty dumb that Apple ditched the mini form factor after the 12

Edit: it was the 13, my bad. But still, why did they have to kill it?

I like it when my phone screen doesn’t get a weird little delaminated ridge though

They’ve had these things for like 6-8 years or so now and it’s the same problem

Edit: please explain to me how “it still has the same problem” conflicts with “it’s gotten a lot better”? I know it’s gotten better. That’s neat. It’s still not solved.

My point is that I personally consider the simple existence of the issue to disqualify it as something I’d buy. I would consider it if it is no longer a problem. Not improved - eliminated. You’re not going to negotiate, debate, or downvote me into changing my mind on that. It’s a physical defect that’s an artifact of the design and the current technology used to satisfy that design.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Bro I was just being cheeky about the fact that you double posted

gravitas_deficiency ,

Uh… yeah. That’s why I’ve never bought one.

Republican bill aims to give Americans in Israeli military same benefits as US soldiers (www.middleeasteye.net)

Two Republican congressmen have introduced legislation that would provide the same employment and economic protections to Americans serving in the Israeli military as US citizens who get deployed to serve in the US military....

gravitas_deficiency ,

…what…?

Like seriously… what the fuck…?

gravitas_deficiency ,

Short term yes; long term probably not. All the dipshit c-suites pushing the “AI” worker replacement initiatives are going to destroy their workforces and then realize that LLMs can’t actually reliably replace any of the workers they fired. And I love that for management.

gravitas_deficiency ,

And neither of those two groups will allow themselves to be replaced.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Yeah dude. We know. But we should. That’s why so many of your own party are so fucking pissed at you.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Or just, you know, only sell them IADS equipment.

Theres no good reason for us to be giving them bombs and strike missiles.

gravitas_deficiency ,

ADHD is doing that every single fucking day, and taking prescriptions that sorta help with it sometimes, but also have a lot of extremely irritating and frustrating side effects for a lot of people.

‘What’s the Problem?’ Zelensky Challenges West Over Hesitations. (www.nytimes.com)

With his army struggling to fend off fierce Russian advances all across the front, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine urged the United States and Europe to do more to defend his nation, dismissing fears of nuclear escalation and proposing that NATO planes shoot down Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace....

gravitas_deficiency ,

That’s an objectively idiotic idea, because that would have a roughly 100% chance of kicking off a nuclear conflict.

I don’t place much stock in Russias saber rattling, but NATO straight up invading Russia would unquestionably trigger an absolutely vicious response.

gravitas_deficiency ,

I mean, one of Taiwan’s last-resort contingency plans is to basically blow up all their chip foundries and the machinery inside of it. They are absolutely willing to go scorched earth if their back is against the wall and there’s no hope of a successful defense.

gravitas_deficiency ,

If the PRC somehow successfully takes Taiwan, but in doing so, utterly destroys the vast majority of the world’s cutting edge chip foundry lines for cpu + gpu + ram + nvme, it’s a pretty safe bet that the rest of the world will be absolutely fucking livid with China at the very least, because it would cause EVERYONE’S economy to crash.

gravitas_deficiency ,

That was the underlying implication of my comment. Of course nobody wants any of these threats to be carried out. But they’re useless as geopolitical constraints unless the threat is credible.

gravitas_deficiency ,

You don’t seem to understand the proportion of chips that Taiwan makes for the world these days.

In terms of replacement capacity… there’s not any. You don’t simply flip a switch and start producing other chips on your fab line, let alone scale shit out 5-10x like that on the drop of a hat. It’s not 3D printing. If Taiwan is invaded and they’re forced to destroy their chip industry, there will be an enormous supply shortfall for several YEARS at least, even in the best possible case.

gravitas_deficiency ,

An independent Taiwan is nothing of the sort.

The PRC could have adopted a much more diplomatic and friendly approach - think EU-esque. Instead of this dipshit woLf wArRioR crap, the PRC could have taken the more mature and measured approach, and worked towards making a strong industrial, geopolitical, and economic alliance with Taiwan.

Hell, if they just accepted that the slow and steady approach was probably going to work better than the “I’m going to have a tantrum” approach in general, they’d probably be doing way better in a whole slew of areas. They could have essentially created a de facto alliance with Taiwan over shared culture, language, and history… but no, Xi wants to prove how big his dick is I guess.

gravitas_deficiency ,

I feel like you’re not reading what I wrote. Maybe making it bigger will help:

What you’re saying indicates that you don’t understand the extremely nuanced and industry specific constraints around integrated circuit manufacturing at scale.

The fact that you’re sticking to your guns so hard here tells me that you’re deep into Dunning-Kruger territory.

gravitas_deficiency ,

She is going to take them to the cleaners, and Altman and his circlejerk club will deserve every single cent of the damages they’re forced to pay. I genuinely hope she makes it an incredibly messy and eye wateringly expensive legal process for them. I’m not a ScarJo fanboy by any means, but fuck OpenAI for thinking they can get away with something so absurdly blatant and obviously unethical.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Well, more importantly, a lot of people with a lot of assets invested a lot of money and thus expect to make a lot more money on OpenAI, so my bet’s on this getting sidetracked in some weird sketchy fashion because the US is a corporate feudal state these days (amongst other things).

gravitas_deficiency ,

That’s actually surprisingly wholesome. It’s always wonderful to see people really putting in the effort towards personal growth. It’s good for them, and it’s also good for everyone else.

gravitas_deficiency ,

But they DO want that sweet sweet customer data. If you think there’s not going to be some sort of user data and behavior profiling bullshit going on at the very least, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Holy fuck this is very literally one of the major plot devices in Ministry for the Future that they have to figure out a way to stop.

Pretty sure we’re not gonna stop it though.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Jesus fucking christ he just cannot read the room. He’s going to throw the whole fucking thing.

gravitas_deficiency ,

It doesn’t, which is the problem.

Climate change impacts millions in India. But as the country votes, some politicians skirt the issue (apnews.com)

Almost 970 million Indians are voting in general elections amid sweltering heat and unpredictable weather extremes exacerbated by human-caused climate change, leading to loss of livelihood, forced migration and increasingly difficult living conditions for millions across the country....

gravitas_deficiency ,

I feel like the only thing that will meaningfully change things anywhere is a climate-driven mass casualty event, like the opening chapter of Ministry for the Future (millions of deaths due to wet bulb temps exceeding the human body’s ability to cool itself for like a week straight). But it’ll also probably only change environmental policies significantly in the country within which the mass casualty event occurs.

gravitas_deficiency , (edited )

That’s neat.

Hope London enjoys its slow descent into geopolitical irrelevance, I guess.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Doesn’t matter. The EU pointedly does not care about how idiotic UK politics have gotten. They’re saying “we can make it suck less for you, but it’s not free, and this is the price”.

The EU can and will hold out indefinitely on this.

The UK is hemorrhaging tens of billions of pounds, and it’s only set to accelerate. They’re not really a financial center anymore. No single market. No Schengen. None of the huge benefits of being in the EU.

But, you know, keep machine gunning your own foot, I guess. That’ll show those silly euros. Or something.

gravitas_deficiency , (edited )

I apologize - I know I sometimes come across a bit pugilistic when I don’t actually intend to. It’s more that I am deeply frustrated by the situation, even as an outside observer.

For what it’s worth, I empathize with you on how frustrating our political ”leaders” often are. Feels like they’re pretty much all aggressively competing for the Upper Class Twit of the Year award on both sides of the pond :(

gravitas_deficiency ,

Yep, no question.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Oh hell yeah.

Force them to use the public option. Make a law to specifically disallow all congresspersons from enrolling in private insurance for as long as they hold office. Violation of that restriction is immediate ejection from the relevant legislative chamber.

We would have single payer by next Tuesday.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Oh I meant like several dozen women come out with his illegitimate heirs, but that’d actually be pretty fuckin hilarious.

gravitas_deficiency ,

You are free… to pay as much as you possibly can for electricity.

Probably the same thing that will happen to all the athletes once they run out of their finite lifetime supply of energy :(
