Somebody once said that if you want to know how free society is, you only have to look at how they treat their prisoners. When prisoners have rights, that means everyone in the society can be free. When prisoners are stripped of basic human rights, that means anyone can be imprisoned with out a legal or moral recourse.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yep.

For the “land of the free,” we have one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Singapore is at 156 (per 100k), Israel is at 168, Russia is at 300, Brazil is at 389, and USA is all the way up at 531.

This has Puritanical/Evangelical Christian roots. If someone is suffering, then they must deserve it. Imprisoned? Must be an irredeemable criminal. Poor? You must be lazy or make frivolous decisions. Disabled? You probably aren’t disciplined about your health.

Babe, why are you taking so long to get ready?

UC Berkeley’s campus is in turmoil. It’s unlike anything in recent memory. (www.politico.com)

Liberal members of the state’s legislative Jewish caucus have publicly castigated UC Berkeley for its handling of hostility toward Jewish students and professors amid the war. They’re pushing state laws targeting antisemitism in response to the events — including a violent protest of an Israeli speaker in late February...

Learn from us. I’m in Texas and it is really horrifying. Do not let them get a foothold or they will trample your basic freedoms. Now that they had “defeated” legal abortion, they are coming for contraception, just as many of us predicted they would.

People are dying.

This raises some interesting questions. The premise of these scientists is that consciousness can be quantified empirically. Yet many of the tests described in this article can be passed by machines. Does that mean that the scientists who signed the declaration consider some smart devices to demonstrate consciousness? And what are the implications?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

There is no way I’m clicking on that link

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Seems like a strong argument that consciousness cannot be determined by testing behaviors.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Is emergent intelligence the scientific definition of consciousness? The article seems to be describing something else.

gedaliyah , (edited )
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I agree with this. I’ve read the statement that the scientists wrote and I honestly could not figure out what they are trying to say. I just don’t see how any of the tests they reference would challenge the idea that we don’t know how to define or test consciousness.

Sentience is not necessarily the same thing but its in a similar place. It may be possible to test depending on the definition.

Am I the only one here bothered by that weird improper hyphenation?

And that, folks, is the story of Florida.

This ass hat is a complete troll. He’s like Israel’s Lauren Boebert. Both need to go.

You are aware that Hamas has continued armed fighting, including firing rockets at civilians since October 7, right? Just because Oct. 7 was by far the worse, that doesn’t mean they laid down their arms and surrendered.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I think Hamas should surrender and release the hostages. I don’t see another realistic way to end the war at this point.

@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

This is why we should be making laws around likeness rights. If you damage somebody by publicly using their name to spread falsehoods, that’s defamation or libel. But, if you produce an image or video of their likeness instead of using their name, there’s no legal recourse. Makes no sense this day in age

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

What is the story behind this image??

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Well, ask a silly question I guess. Thanks 🤣

It looks like they are shifting the funds into a leadership program. I’m not exactly sure what that means

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I think it means they are not awarding any new scholarships in the future. I don’t think that it nullifies any existing awards. It’s been awarded to something like 900 African American students over the years, most of whom would not have been able to attend otherwise.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. We saw how quickly some people abandoned their principles about nonviolent protest as soon as they saw people they disagreed with doing it. Suddenly half my ACAB friends were cheering for the police to “do their job.”

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Of course, it was pretty surreal to see people vilifying the effects of the protest not the protesters.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Just 34 of these misleading posts received more than 37 million views, according to ISD. Many of the accounts posting the misinformation were also verified, meaning they have paid X $8 per month for the “blue tick” and that their content is amplified by the platform’s algorithm.

$8 for a million views is a pretty good deal. Ex-twitter is essentially now just a troll marketplace.

Apparently he was actually pretty good at baseball but there was no minor league facility that could accommodate his fandom. So he had to retire before he could really train to compete at that level.

I read that wrong and thought that was to emulate the iphone and I was pretty stunned!

gedaliyah ,

Most of the Israelis who live near Gaza are peace activists and environmental activists who live there to help build peaceful relations with Palestine.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not what proportional warfare means.

It has nothing to do with the numbers being proportional on two sides. It’s whether the military response is proportional to the military goal. The military goal in this case is the defeat of an embedded terrorist organization and return of hostages.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I disagree, but at least you are understanding the correct meaning of proportionality and we can have a discussion.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

You are not upset with me, you are upset with the definition of a word.

Obviously we all want a peaceful world, but when you have a group like Hamas that believe their god wants them to kill anyone who is not their form of extremist religion, how can you end violence without eliminating them? Israel tried for decades to avoid this type if direct conflict. That avoidance cost them and led to the deadliest day in all Israeli history.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Israel does not keep or have Palestinian hostages.

You are trying to establish a moral equivalence between kidnapping civilians from their homes and arresting suspected or convicted criminals. They are not the same thing and equating them only muddies the waters on the real underlying issues.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

While it is impossible to have an accurate count, the best estimates are that about 1/3 of those killed have been combatants. The UN estimates 90% civilian casualties across all wars. The Iraq war was similar in that it involved urban, embedded terror groups and modern technology. The civilian casualty ratio was 77%. This war is in line with other conflicts of the past 50 years.

It is still a terrible tragedy. War is always a tragedy.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

True. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that we have yet seen what a military success looks like in the Middle East.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

This is exactly what I mean by muddying the waters. Israel clearly has an extremely damaged criminal justice system, but those underlying systems are not going to be addressed as long as the world refuses to acknowledge them.

When you have activists who only understand half the story decrying Palestinian “hostages,” they draw focus away from where it’s needed. Israel needs serious criminal justice reform, but that is now than ever from happening.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

50?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, so now you are beginning to clarify instead of obfuscate.

You’ve identified a problem with policing; unjust detainment. That’s something that deserves attention. You can donate here to help.

Do any windows users remember in like 2019 when they had the offline search in the start menu that was such a beast? It could find anything inside the contents of any document on the computer almost instantaneously, use booleans, search metadata and everything. We had no idea at the time that was peak start menu. It’s all been downhill.
