Yeah they should really invent a printer with a tiny internet connected screen on the front that could convey this type of message about a person’s account and the nature of the problem.

NAACP to Black student-athletes: Take your talents elsewhere amid Florida anti-DEI efforts (www.oregonlive.com)

Earlier this month, the University of Florida closed its Office of the Chief Diversity Officer, eliminating 13 full-time DEI positions and 15 administrative appointments. This came after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill called the Stop Woke Act last year, which prohibits the use of state funds for any DEI programs.

I think it sounds like a great idea! Some people treat dates like they’re supposed to be impressing the other person. The best dates are the ones that are just about getting to know someone.

Of course the usual date rules apply. Listen more than you talk. Be considerate. Don’t criticize her interests. Have fun!

How could we possibly expect that there wouldn’t be bias? Is based off the patterns that humans use. Humans have bias. The difference is that humans he can recognize their bias and worked overcome it. As far as i know chat GPT can’t do that.

The Real Lessons of the Alabama IVF Ruling (www.theatlantic.com)

In fact, the case had essentially nothing to do with abortion. Three families pursuing IVF sued their clinic after another patient apparently wandered into the facility’s freezers without the staff realizing it and picked up a container of embryos. The extreme cold burned that person’s hand, causing them to drop the...

I think the author is not trying to to make pro-life extremist views seem reasonable. They seem to be reporting on the fact that framing this particular case within the abortion debate has missed important issues, resulting in legal confusion and further deregulating an already under-regulated industry.

The pro-life agenda - imho - caused this very situation by altering the outcome of the case. The clinic may well have been negligent, but the crux of the lawsuit was that an in vitro embryo is indistinguishable from an in vivo embryo. Of course they are different. You do not have to be a scientist to understand that - it requires a pedantic failure of logic that leapfrogs common sense.

It wasn't just the goblins — is J.K. Rowling doing Holocaust denial now? (forward.com)

The most famous forms of Holocaust denial and revisionism tend to focus on Jews, casting doubt, for example, on how many were exterminated in the camps. But denying the impact the Nazis had on the other groups they targeted, including queer and trans people, disabled people and Romani people, is still Holocaust denial. Maybe...

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

No, the freedom was instant. There may have been logistical issues with medical treatment of the now free people. In all my conversations with Holocaust survivors, I have never heard one say that they were not free after the camp was liberated. That is just a nonsense take.

Anytime you look under the hood of something billed as “completely AI generated” media, you find a team of really talented, creative people. Music, books, short films, and of course games. It’s the same story time and again, and the story is marketing.

Creative people using AI as a tool can do creative things.

the size of the relationship is often statistically small, which has led some researchers to conclude that these new technologies are not responsible for the gigantic increases in mental illness that began in the early 2010s.

Anyway, here’s 8500 words about why we are blaming cell phones anyway.

Dozens of Palestinian orphans transferred from Rafah to Bethlehem (today.lorientlejour.com)

This is still a suspect move, but let’s not confuse things. They are going from one part of Palestine to another, not being transferred to another group entirely.

As an act of genocide, it refers to situations where children are forcibly removed from their families and indoctrinated in a foreign culture in order to erase their identity. Think for example of First Nations children in Canadian Indian residential schools or Jewish children in Russian Cantonist schools, or Uighur children confined to Chinese boarding schools.

No one is saying that’s what is happening here.

Why are mental hospitals run like prisons?

I was recently involuntarily held in a mental hospital where I went through prison like conditions (strip search, had to wear scrubs, was locked in a room outside certain times a day, stuff like that) and thankfully came out in one piece after 8 days of this crap. I was just wondering why we subject people to these conditions...

Unfortunately, this seems to be the answer. Most people who are in short-term institutions like this get there through some type of psychotic break. Their incentive is not to really provide any care, but to maintain an orderly environment while the break passes (whether a manic episode, suicide attempt, etc.). This is also why they will tend to hold people for the maximum length legally allowed - they can bill more and most of them have guaranteed funding.

UN experts say grounds to believe rape occurred in Hamas attack on Israel (www.aljazeera.com)

“The mission team found clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing,” the report also said.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

You’re thinking of Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of Fatah and president of the PA. His government’s also extremely corrupt but nothing on the scale of Hamas. In fact, they are despised by Hamas for their willingness to cooperate with Israel on certain matters.

His personal wealth is estimated somewhere around $100 million.

Keeping in mind that he is considered corrupt by his own people, and has more power on the world stage, more formal authority, and oversees a larger portion of the Palestinian population, his wealth is still a drop in the bucket compared to the leaders of Hamas.

Ismail Haniyeh is worth est. $4 billion. Khaled Mashal is worth est. $4 billion as well. Abu Marzuk is worth est. $3 billion. All three of them live outside Palestine. Say what you will about Abbas, at least he lives with his people.

If you’re wondering how three different leaders of one of the poorest regions of one of the poorest countries in the world managed to become multi billionaires, all while their people starved, then you’re asking very good questions.

Yes, I think it’s a question of use. I can’t think of many examples where you would quickly need to know the measurement to the nearest Mm. Maybe if for some reason you deal with a lot of lunar orbits? Diameters of exoplanets?

Any earth distances we need to know with greater precision, and any stellar distances are probably better measured in light years, etc.

Iconic Old West tumbleweeds roll in and blanket parts of suburban Salt Lake City (www.seattletimes.com)

I have a handful of apps that I use exclusively through WSA. There are some apps that just work better in an android environment, and increasingly there are apps that require android or ios to function. For example, you can even use a landline and WSA to set up a WhatsApp account and use it from your PC. Or their apps that I want to put in a sandbox to use but not on my phone.

I even have lemmy apps that I use on the computer.

I wonder what this means for linux environment support in windows 11? They were introduced around the same time with the similar goal of expanding the functionality of Windows.
