I guess cell phones can substitute for that now to an extent.

dan1101 ,

This is a weird headline. Ok the guy really is a Batman researcher. I’m not sure why it was so important to mention that the Batman co-creator’s son was gay though, unless that was somehow relevant to the creation process or his life experience or something.

dan1101 ,

Ok so they didn’t think the son had an heir but he actually did, I still am not sure that the son’s sexual orientation is that important in a story about Batman to elementary school kids.

Biden to announce first-ever federal office of gun violence prevention (www.politico.com)

President Joe Biden will announce the creation of the first-ever federal office of gun violence prevention on Friday, fulfilling a key demand of gun safety activists as legislation remains stalled in Congress, according to two people with direct knowledge of the White House’s plans....

dan1101 ,

Maybe not encourage guns to be sold to cartels, unlike the ATF Fast and Furious program. It was supposed to track firearms going south, but just lost them.

dan1101 ,

Wait, what?

dan1101 ,

What sort of workplace were you at where people kidnap you? Did he get fired and arrested?

dan1101 ,

All the way from bottom to top while hiking, the highest was probably Old Rag Mountain in Virginia. About 900 meters (2952 feet) at the top. Trail is moderate incline with a little rock scrambling at the top. Big boulders at the top to lounge on and great views. It used to be fairly obscure and you wouldn’t see many people but now it became popular with the Northern VA/DC/MD crowd and it got so crowded you have to pay a fee and I believe make a reservation to climb it now.

I have also climbed straight up a wild mountain with no trails in Grant County, West Virginia. It’s about 700 meters (2296 feet.) We crossed a river and went straight up, using trees to pull ourselves up the steep slope for most of the way. I’m not sure what the mountain is called, but it is rocky at the top and has a great view of a campground below.

whats your unconcious sign that you really really like the game you are playing

So i just noticed that when i really like the game at some point i will at once play the game and watch the stream/youtube wideo of the game( usualy speedrun or aome hardcore challenge). I noticed it recently with anno 1800 but now that i think about it i did that with tales of arise, eu4 ,kings bounty, total war, hades and...

dan1101 ,

When I’m researching things about the game even when I’m not playing.

Starfield is definitely doing that for me. Before that Distant Worlds 2, X4 Foundations, Elite Dangerous, Skyrim, Space Engineers, Empyrion, GTA V, and Minecraft have all done that.

dan1101 ,

I found season 2 very memorable but season 1 was much better. Season 3 was quite good too.

Why do you hate Microsoft?

I’m helping a friend of mine writing a long essay exposing the abusive, monopolistic and anti-consumer practices of Microsoft. First, we’ve created some sort of table of contents with the different topics we want to cover and now we’re gathering sources for each of these topics....

dan1101 ,

The set the standards, and then break them. They have been doing this since early versions of Office.

They don’t finish porting old applets to new Windows before they release another new Windows.

They unfairly use their market position to push their products and services. Edge, Onedrive, Teams, etc.

Windows Updates, need I continue?

dan1101 ,

First thing I’ve heard about it and…pass

dan1101 ,

I wonder if they realize you can name a male character a female name and that there are same-sex relationships. Of course that is all optional, but don’t let that stop a good outrage. In fact the pronoun thing is nothing unless you deliberately change from the defaults.

dan1101 ,

I suspect he’s pro abortion because he doesn’t want a bunch of illegitimate children from his affairs.

dan1101 ,

That depends entirely on how interested I am.

dan1101 ,

I need to finish that some day. I loved it at first, in fact I still love the gameplay and map. But the storylines just didn’t grab me. Michael is a dick with an asshole family, Franklin is a good dude but a dumbass, and Trevor well anyone who does business with him should not expect good results.

dan1101 ,

Bethesda didn’t do this sort of thing before Microsoft bought them.

dan1101 ,

Ignorance fought. Or bad memory.

dan1101 ,

I’m not sure, but if you have an Nvidia card you can limit FPS in Nvidia Control Panel. I did that for Starfield so I didn’t get the frequent 25-60 FPS swings.

How to learn to play drums?

I’m thinking about learning to play drums for some time now and I have a question. If I’m a complete beginner should I still get a full drum set? I know you can buy a cheap electric set for like $300 but can I start with something smaller and simpler? Are there some kind of electric pads that would work for taking first...

dan1101 ,

I would suggest midrange or used equipment in good condition, that way you get the advantage of quality without the high price.

dan1101 ,

He was a crazy guy but his antivirus was legit back in the day. Then corpos took it over and it went to shit.

dan1101 ,

What always kept me off the “cloud” (other people’s computers) is not only giving up my data but giving up control on what I spend. Corporations lure you in with flashy promises and low prices, then usually over time the service gets worse the prices go higher and higher. I’m sure the cloud hosting corporations are good at pricing their services very high but not quite high enough to make most customers cancel.

dan1101 ,

That’s true, back in the 1970s and 1980s IBM locked companies in with mainframes and PCs were their way out.

Do other people ever have the experience of simulating yourself doing something in your head, and then doing it in real life exactly how you imagined it?

I’m thinking about sports as an example. I used to do fencing, and sometimes we would learn a new technique or I would imagine one to do, and I would imagine myself doing it, then it was almost like autopilot where my body would do it just how I imagined, like it was easy. It didn’t happen very often but when it did it felt...

dan1101 ,

Yes, before starting a project I like to visualize all parts of it to see if the project is viable and what will be involved.

dan1101 ,

I believe 50 Cent should be billed as Cent.

dan1101 ,

I try to sneak them in as part of other meals, even if I don’t like the vegetable. Like if I have a burrito bowl I will put carrots in it along with everything else, or a pizza I will put green peppers on it along with pepperoni.

Fruits I don’t do as well on, if I get frozen yogurt I will get rare fruits like mango, and I drink fruit juice.

I try to eat a variety of foods as much as possible.

dan1101 ,

I see your point. It’s the same sort of thing for various violence around the world. Headlines like “3 die in West Bank Violence” should actually be “Israeli Soldiers Kill 3 Palestinians.”

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

dan1101 ,

I used to pirate like crazy in my youth. Now since Steam and Netflix I don’t pirate, recognizing that creators deserve to get paid and also by paying them that supports making more content.

dan1101 ,

Days Gone is a great open world game, with motorcycles and zombies.

dan1101 ,

Wouldn’t it be funny if Apple took down their store intentionally so there would be headlines about it?

dan1101 ,

Unless we’re missing something he doesn’t have much more to escalate with.

dan1101 ,

This would have never happened in Burma.

AT&T Once Again Wants ‘Big Tech’ To Pay For Broadband Upgrades (www.techdirt.com)

For decades AT&T has sought to shovel its broadband network upgrade costs on to the shoulders of other companies. It was the primary catalyst for the net neutrality wars, after AT&T made it clear it wanted to (ab)use its monopoly over broadband access to force companies like Google to pay an extra troll toll if they wanted their...

dan1101 ,

Not another cent until you do what was already agreed to.

dan1101 ,

Oh no! Anyways.

I have no sympathy for those that make money from exploiting gamblers.

Malicious Google Search Ads can now fake the displayed URL to push malware downloads (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

Most people know at this point that when searching for a popular software package to download, you should be very careful to avoid clicking on any of the search ads that appear, as this has become an extremely common vector for distributing malware to unsuspecting users....

dan1101 ,

Businesses should not be allowed to serve ads from random people without curating/checking them first. Yeah it would be a lot of trouble and cost a lot of money, too fucking bad you are making billions of dollars off this.

dan1101 ,

And if False Advertising is a crime in print media, why is malware advertising not also a crime?

dan1101 ,

At least not without an ad blocker. I never see these ads, but if I did I would initially assume they were generally safe being served by Google and right at the top of the search results. There is no excuse for this, yes users need to be careful but Google should never serve this deceptive crap to begin with.

dan1101 ,

If False Advertising in web/app ads started being prosecuted, the whole Internet economy would be devastated. Would probably be thousands of dollars per violation. Just think of all the scummy ads that appear on news sites or in apps. I even consider those “Download Now” button type ads to be false advertising, they are trying to look like part of the page they are served on, they don’t even tell you what you’re downloading.

dan1101 ,

I don’t have NFC at all. Ultimate safety.

dan1101 ,

Likely not, you wouldn’t have anywhere to get that labeling other than them selling it to you. You can always call them first and tell them what happened, get return authorization. They should be willing to accept a return on a new product that doesn’t come in the original packaging. In fact with Gamestop if you have a local store they might accept the return there, I would think a store employee would be more sympathetic.
