Best Buy Membership "discount" (lemmy.world)

So I was shopping with my wife today and I said “oh let’s see if my membership helps out.” So we went and added the same item to each of our carts, and to our surprise, the total was the same! So what is it exactly that I’m paying for in this membership if the items “original price” is higher for me than it is for...

Pass on the fridge. I have the same one and it will freeze the ones in the back if you don’t leave a space between the back of the fridge and your drinks. I can only fill it about 2/3 of the way or it doesn’t work very well. I’ve considered adding a fan inside, and I’ve even powered a USB fan off a battery pack and it made a big difference.

burrito ,

These can be used in interesting ways. There are some small ones that can be placed below a shutoff lever and if it soaks up any water it presses the lever and shuts off water to an appliance.

burrito ,

Came to the comments to say exactly this. The rootkit debacle was the end of the road for me and Sony. They’re still exactly the same company, and this move proves it.

I got some pretty cool holographic metal slammers right at the tail end.

Oh, wow! I can hear Sublime playing on the radio!

Depends on if you have found your passion. I found the career I was passionate about at age 14 and now have more experience than the vast majority of my peers. Until just recently, I had never managed someone younger than me, and I’ve been a supervisor for a very long time now.

I can’t believe they’re up to 40. I remember installing Fedora Core 1 like it was yesterday. Yum (and now dnf) has come a long way. It used to have to individually retrieve metadata files for every available package, rather than using a single compressed index of all the packages available in the repository you were using. It made just getting to the stage where dependencies were calculated take forever.

And the units should be consistent. It drives me nuts when I’m in a store and the unit varies across different sizes of the same product.

Turns per roll on one brand, grams per inch for the next, and ounces per half-roll for your third choice.

Help with HDD

I have a 4TB HDD that I use to store music, films, images, and text files. I have a 250GB SDD that I use to install my OS and video games. So far I didn’t have any problem with this setup, obviously it’s a bit slower when it reads the HDD but nothing too serious, but lately it’s gotten way worse, where it just lags too...

A bad SATA cable will cause this too.

To get a better look at Buddy Christ, of course.

Multifunction Laser Printer and Linux

My faithful Brother laser printer just poo’d itself. And since I’ve not purchased a new printer with additional features since I switched to full-time Linux, I thought I’d better ask around to make sure the document scanning, copy, fax (maybe once a year if that), and other features will work correctly....

I have a Brother MFC-L8900CDW and it works great for printing and scanning on Linux (I use Arch BTW). I use SANE for scanning. You can also set it up to scan to a Samba share or ftp location.

burrito ,

Any SANE front-end will do. I usually use xsane.

burrito ,

I don’t do much scanning, perhaps 5 times a year, and it’s sufficient for my needs. I can definitely see how it leaves gaps if you do a ton of scanning.

1994 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme

Was it the 2 door or the 4 door model?

We had a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL 2-door model with the 3.4L engine that GM developed with Lotus. That car was a ton of fun. Quick for the time, handled great, and parts were relatively cheap for it. Unfortunately, somebody totaled it when it was parked on the street one night. It was a bit of a pain in the butt to work on because the engine barely fit under the hood and it was a ton of work to replace parts like the alternator since the engine subframe had to be unbolted and lowered to provide access.

You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?

I’ve got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....

Definitely not from the team working on search on Windows then.

Soldering in new switches doesn’t take very long on Logitech mice. I gave the last one I had replaced under warranty to my son and he soldered in a replacement in about 15 minutes and hasn’t had any issues with it since.

Add carbon steel pans to that list of safer pans.

And make it connect with an RJ-45 so you can swap out for a connection device for your own carrier instead of some stupid proprietary interface.

It’s absolutely mind blowing how many innovations came from Bell Labs.

Not with modern package management systems. In the pacutils package is the pacrepairfile tool that is specifically made for repairing file permissions man.archlinux.org/man/pacrepairfile.1

Use the pacrepairfile utility and you can set them to the distro shipped permissions easily man.archlinux.org/man/pacrepairfile.1

I miss a lot of the niche hobby subs, the non-image sex related subs, justrolledintotheshop, *swap subs, and some of the *sales subs. I have other forums where I can fulfill some of these and it was nice to have them all in one place.

How do you get rid of "wet dog" smell in a dishwasher?

This is a thing with every dishwasher I’ve had, some models seem better than other. You wash the dishes and when they dry, they have a musty odor I can only describe as “wet dog”. Other people often don’t seem to notice this, so maybe I am just sensitive to it. Though if I point it out, then they smell it....

I completely agree that powdered detergent is the best. Running the water to ensure it’s getting hot water immediately is also very important.

However, I disagree that the detergent should be filled all the way. The amount of detergent you use should scale based on water hardness. If you have softer water you can use less detergent. For example, I have relatively soft water where I live so I only fill the detergent about half way and my dishes come out sparkling. If my water was harder I’d have to use more. The instruction manual for the dishwasher should have guidance on how much detergent to use. Using too much can cause your dishes to not clean as well.

[SOLVED] I can't change my /home location, and it's driving me mad

For the past week, I’ve been trying to switch my /home partition from my 500GB nvme to my 1TB sata ssd. I’ve been asking and receiving help from people in my previous post, but I keep hitting wall after wall in making it work and I seem to be missing a step....

Here’s your issue. Your selinux contexts are bad so you’re probably being denied access to your own data. To reset the contexts back to normal you can use the restorecon command:

restorecon -Rv /home/

The -R tells it to go through the specified path recursively, the v tells it to be verbose in the output and show you what it’s doing.

Awesome! Enjoy!

I blame that 100% on Nvidia. Buying an Nvidia card these days for Linux makes about as much sense as buying an iPhone to run Android. Linus summed it up well youtu.be/iYWzMvlj2RQ

The number of applications that run through xwayland is shrinking every day.

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

burrito ,

Yep, this is exactly it. When 3g was going away and 4g was starting up, T-Mobile pulled the same thing trying to brand their UMTS stuff as 4g when it’s clearly a 3g protocol. You can always rely on the marketers to lie until the end of time.

burrito ,

I used to have to occasionally run this but I’d say it has been at least a couple of years since I last had to. I was a pretty early adopter of pipewire because it solved some Bluetooth issues that pulseaudio had. It has improved immensely since I first started using it.

Gonna need a new release of Skyrim too.

Should you invest in a better grinder?

If you’re not quite sure about getting into coffee, you can get started with a small budget, and you can make a nice cup of coffee that way. Probabaly not a great cup, but a cup of coffee you’ll find enjoyable at the time. Once you start experimenting with different variables and digging a bit deeper into different flavors,...

burrito ,

I grind a single dose at a time too and it works great. The only issue I have is that my Rancilio Rocky grinder has a fair amount of retention. Swapping out the stock elephant spout for a 3d printed open one allows me to scrape out the retained coffee.

burrito ,

It could be a regional outage. Something like duckduckgo isn’t going to be run from a single location so the individual experiences are going to vary.

burrito ,

Oh did it get better? I tried it back in the day and had a hard time getting into it.

burrito ,

Cool, thanks for the write up. Maybe I’ll install it and give it another try. I have tried it a couple of times and it has been quite a while since my last attempt. It definitely was the combat system I had difficulty with.

Lucid Motors drops the price of its cheapest EV by more than $8,000 (www.yahoo.com)

Lucid Motors drops the price of its cheapest EV by more than $8,000::Lucid Motors is lopping thousands of dollars off the price of its most affordable electric sedans as it looks to boost demand after a disappointing year of sales. I feel less bad now with the Fisker I got at $6/share.

A while back I sealed and reinsulated my house and replaced all the duct work. It made a massive difference on my electric bill as my house’s HVAC system is a heat pump. I did all the work myself and got a rebate from the electric company and it ended up costing me about $1000 out of pocket. I did some calculations back then and my payback period was only a couple of years so it has been paying me back for quite a while now. It was one of the best things I have ever done.

You could run jellyfin on your desktop and use that to stream shows to your tablet. Or VLC works for connecting to network file shares and you could play from that.

burrito ,

It’d be an easy battle. The last iRobot device I had was a fickle piece of junk that’d error out constantly or ignore virtual walls. I’m on my second Roborock vacuum now and am very impressed with how well they work. I gave my first one away and it’s still working great for the person I gave it to.

Came here to say Wings of Fire. Absolutely fantastic series. Thanks for the other recs I’ll check those out.

When you get new tires or have them rotated you’re supposed to take them back for tightening after 50-100 miles. Perhaps they ought to update the documentation to take them to the mechanic for a few ugga duggas after a couple flights.
