Self hosted Wetransfer?

Hello, i am looking for a self hosted application for sharing files like with wetransfer. I have tried the discontinued Firefox Send which has nice features like link expiry and works great in general but lacks authentication (only offers simple password protection). I also want the option to share with registered users. Is...

anzo ,

Since no one mentioned, there’s a Firefox send fork alive, send.vis.ee or src GitHub.com/timvisee/send

I think you forgot to mention code that actually runs. I am sure I’ve seen some repos that really work! /S

PSA: Update your docker installation. Leaky Vessels flaws allow hackers to escape Docker, runc containers (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

Snyk team has found four vulnerabilities collectively called “Leaky Vessels” that impact the runc and Buildkit container infrastructure and build tools, potentially allowing attackers to perform container escape on various software products....

anzo ,

Note that this news are important, I only want to give some peace of mind to the many amateurs self-hosting out there ;) Don’t panic. Think about how such attacker might gain access. There’s always a practical difference between a vulnerability being there and how easily it is exploitable. Most CVEs are theoretical, and combining 4 of them would be even more difficult. From what I read, the vulnerability would be in the Dockerfile itself. Also, you need to weigh in the motivation such attacker would have. If you’re an average netizen is different from a multi billion dollar company website. So, the attacker would need to meet all those conditions described in the CVEs and even in that case, they might escape the container only to find it was installed in rootless mode, so they just have access as regular user. But that’s depending on how docker was installed.

Oh. I didn’t meant to incite breaking any of the golden rules of cyber safety: (1) always update, (2) never host WordPress ;)

anzo ,

Haven’t you heard of search engines? ;p

anzo ,

You may want to install the extension on a alternate profile of your browser …mozilla.org/…/profile-manager-create-remove-swit… , or use a fork (e.g. libre wolf) dedicated to using that website. I’d probably go with the latter because is less cumbersome. This way, your data or activities in the main browser/ profile is safe. That’s assuming the only issue is about privacy and regarding those permissions.

Radarr/Plex Files Randomly Gone

I just went to watch a movie and my server said it wasn’t there, so I went and check the PC folders and all of my movies are gone. Not in any of the recycling bins, not anywhere, just gone. What would have caused this? How do I stop it from happening again? It’s been working fine for months then this just happened.

anzo ,

There’s hope. Try recuva (works on windows). Stop using those drives. No data is deleted, ever. Only the spaces is marked as available, and data is overwritten. While we are at it, this also means that if you really want to delete a file the actual process is overwriting it several times and then do the OS “deletion”. There are tools for that too, most are aptly named as file shredders. Good luck!

Sky Italia Targets Pirate Streaming App VancedFlix Through GitHub (torrentfreak.com)

GitHub has removed the popular pirate streaming app VancedFlix from its servers in response to a takedown notice sent by Sky Italia. The request targets a similarly named repository on the developer platform, as well as the app’s APK file that’s linked under the download button on the official site VancedFlix.

Codeberg develops and uses forgejo, which is working towards adding federation: forgejo.org/compare/-on-forge-federation

Then of course git itself is p2p, you can use ssh (no web UI) and host it in many servers (git remote).

anzo ,

You can compare prices (and locations) of “dedi(s)” here lowendbox.com/category/virtual-servers/

anzo ,

My take would be take a PNG image and convert to ANSI. So for example you can use an AI to get a PNG, then you can posterize in Gimp if needed, and finally run something like ansilove.org but there are plenty of tools, just search image2ascii or similar. Good luck. Have fun!

Self Hosting an RSS feed for news/media/etc?

Heyas, wondering if there’s an open sourced piece of software or the like, that could scrape media platforms for a specific topic. Platforms like YT, X, Lemmy, News Media, etc., perhaps using RSS? But, a program I can host on my server, that only I have access too, via webpage, CLI, whatever…...

anzo ,

Everyone is suggesting readers. I think you are looking for something like docs.rsshub.app it’s capable of generating RSS feeds from pretty much everything.

This post title is misleading. The developer was working with Snap until Canonical didn’t allowed it anymore. He’s pissed with the policy enforcement which is strictly speaking commercial and as bad as Apple’s afaik…

anzo ,

Canonical has been taking bad decisions for quite some time now, and this developer was trying to reach Ubuntu users even while probably knowing these. Which makes sense, of course. The point being that this dev’s disappointment seems quite specific in these notes (against Snap), and imho he might work again towards shipping their app through Snap if he was allowed to. My comment compares Canonical to Apple, to give some context of where Canonical is at so many other idiosyncrasies (for example, I also heard other bad stuff about their H.R., in particular a way too lengthy hiring process.)

Apache Guacamole comes to mind, it gives you access to all desktop apps on a headless server. Granted, you may not want to install desktop apps. But I think it’s smart to offload development of, say, music players to other projects instead of reinventing each and every wheel… (Also, there’s music streaming and all sort of web apps already. So I don’t know what’s the usecase really. But that’s just me tho)

Edit: kudos on your project. Looks neat!!!

My go-to solution for documentaries is mvgroup.org good luck!

Rather use a smaller app, like FileBrowser

Self-hosted calendar that isn't Nextcloud and can send e-mail reminders, not just pop-ups

I’m trying to de-Google my life and self-host more. One tricky point with me is calendaring. I can get a CalDav server running and syncing with my Android phone without much hassle, but I haven’t yet found a server or client that can send e-mail reminders for events, rather than just pop-up notifications....

anzo ,

Sending emails is too old, and requires a full online app to send you the reminder. Only google or other big corps support this because a bounced email is retried many hours later… Heck, just the sending might suppose delays. The current calendar solutions give push notifications to clients (e.g. PC or phone)

anzo ,

Maybe we should have a wikiton event to update the organized knowledge and all replies to such question post pointing users to “our” docs would be more than welcome. Specially instead all these arguments that tbh have their own sense of truth on each side…

I love rsnapshot, but prefer snapshots on COW filesystems ;)

Installation on phone from F-droid (Syncthing-fork) gives a 1-way share of your Camera to backup to PC whenever you get back home. That’s my top usecase… Together with syncing KeePass database since long ago too.

How to bypass a metered connection?

In North America, using Xfinity for reference. I want to create both a home NAS and offline Wiki/media backup. Problem is to get the amount of data I need would blow through my plan and throttle my speed. I guess I could try and do it over a longer period or download just before the billing cycle renews so even if I go over it...

anzo ,

I heard some people would do ‘domain fronting’ to mask packages as going to a web that was unmetered (e.g. Google or the providers own site). But I never tried it, only heard of the trick when it was too old (counter back measures finally catch up). But you can try… there it’s, that rabbit hole… GL&HF!

I wrote a small homage to Alexandra Elbakyan on my PhD Thesis because her courage and dedication helped me get throw that stage of my academic life. Here are the URLs listed on Wikipedia. They might be blocked by DNS providers, but afaik the project is alive and works for many papers (unless it’s too recent) ymmv.

Using Android Private DNS AdGuard Home via reverse tunnel

I have had AdGuard Home for a few years now, running on my small Ubuntu server. All works fine, but my ISP turned CGNAT few weeks back. I have all my stuff running via Wireguard reverse tunnel to free Oracle VPS. Everything works, except AdGuard. I’ve tried to forward all necessary ports, but still my phone says Can’t...

What about other devices? Do they connect to it? If so , the issue would be something at the phone or mobile network provider…

anzo ,

What about gallery-dl ? It’s on GitHub and apparently support both websites

anzo ,

Indeed, together with Jellyfin (or any other software) running at the computer connected to the TV via HDMI. There’s also gsconnect if user had a GTK-based desktop (e.g. Gnome) instead of Qt (e.g. KDE Plasma).

iirc, MIT could have denied access to FBI in setting up a trap to whoever was the owner of such laptop. They could’ve set the trap themselves and dealt with academic discipline too. So, they did enable the up-scalation of the conflict.

Of course, it’s all subjective at this point… either I recall incorrectly some details, or even how I unconsciously choose to see it is shaped by personal world views.

Ironically, Signal is about to move user IDs towards something unattached to telephone numbers and it had not been able to do so yet. Meanwhile, the slow moving XMPP has never made the wrong decision of using phone numbers because it was developed in an era when phones where a whole other thing than today’s pocket computers. Instead, XMPP accounts are federated like Lemmy or email…

OP said he’s been using a Docker image that it’s “official by Docker”, and not the AIO image official by Nextcloud. The issue here is a random contributor on GitHub’s docker organization. Afaik those images are not carefully tested, docker, as many floss organizations rely primarily on contributors, and plenty of these are amateurs or students trying to build a profile…

issues with QbitTorrent stalled torrents

I am just getting back my sea legs, but apparently they’re pretty shaky because I can’t get my ubuntu torrent (no seriously, it is) to download. It never starts downloading and is stuck in “stalled”. I’ve tried a number of things, but even with default settings it isn’t starting. I’m using proton VPN on Linux Mint,...

What happened to tahoe-LAFS?

I’ve been investigating distributed (and often decentralized) file and file storage systems for quite a while and have run across this name a few times. I only recently took a closer look at it. Although it appeared to have some steam in it 9-10 years ago, it’s been fairly quiet since then. I’m looking for commentary on...

Prowlarr VPN/proxy advice

Been having a frustrating but rewarding time setting up my first server with some advice from you all. Learned a lot and feel like I’m almost there with a lot of it. One thing I’ve really been struggling with is public indexers on Prowlarr. In the UK I can only access them behind a VPN but Prowlarr can’t access the rest of...

There’s a running candidate that said that, but that’s the same candidate that said so many crazy shit and lies. So, you can take it with a grain of salt. Even if that candidate won the upcoming elections, I hope that dissolving Argentina’s central bank is not going to happen because of many reasons, but also because the country has a parliament… They shouldn’t allow it.

Faking Pixel 5a

I’ve read on reddit that Google still provides unlimited photos backup if you own Pixel 5a and lower. On rooted Android you can fake that and get free backup storage, but who wants to give pictures to Google?! I was thinking if it’s possible or done by someone to create an environment on Docker by faking device info to...

I disagree with what you’re implying. FYI, I’m a migrant in Germany, follow [email protected] to practice the language and it’s my understanding that most of the posts there are inclined towards progressive or leftist ideals. Also, I chose migrating here instead of the US because it felt like it has less fascists. Of course, that’s just my humble world view.
