Afaik it’s either LTO tapes or a RAIDZ array, I like ZFS on Linux for that matter. Check the TrueNAS Scale distro for example. There are different raid levels, I use raid5…

Nextcloud calendar with caldav and micorosoft office

Hi a friend of mine is using self hosted nextcloud (All In One 28.0.3) with microsoft office. to syncronise calendars, I installed caldav. the connection works properly but all the calendars show up in the same colors and all the calendars are shown, not possible to hide some of them. any ideas?

anzo ,

Maybe the colors were set before syncing? Try adjusting one to a new color, see if that change is synced. It would be silly, but maybe that’s the case.

Selfhosted systrem to monitor daily incoming email (backup reports)

Hi all! I’ve been looking for a selfhosted system that can monitor one or more email accounts and check if a certain email with a particular subject arrives every day (or every x hours) and alert me if it doesn’t (or if the subject is different). I need this to check if backups from different PC have run or not. The best...

Depending on how much infra you want to put up, there’s also mailinabox that can do all (email aliases, etc.)

anzo ,

How is it “less” private? Because the API isn’t a paywall, sure. But… I don’t know what’s your perspective, really.

anzo ,

Assuming that is really an issue (depends on who you are, what you’re doing, and the motivation of the actor mounting such spying infrastructure), how is it any different on Reddit? First, being closed source and everything, we can’t rule out that easier and large scale logging isn’t already implemented. Secondly, such actor would probably just pay the API and scrape the same data if not with more details. It would also get extra metadata from brokers, etc.

Ultimately, if you want privacy, I agree that federation is undesired. That’s why there are Lemmy instances that block all other instances by default. AFAIK those were from right extremists and pesos, at least judging by the name of their URLs.

anzo ,

Well, on Reddit any party can pay the API prices that are needed to scrape data. So, the paywall. I guess it’s some measure… But if you are being tracked by such an actor, your threat model can’t really include reddit… It’s defeating the purpose. All this is discussion on air.

anzo ,

Oh yes, that’s an issue with Lemmy. Edits don’t get federated, they stay on the instance. I didn’t knew but it makes sense that it’s the same with votes.

I believe the issue is that to keep every updated you’d need a far more complex system, like streaming the changes or CRDTs.

This is exactly why we love Python (and other languages with rich package ecosystem, even when only on their niche usage cases). You can build upon other people’s knowledge and effort to do cool things efficiently and effectively!

Assistance migrating from gitea to forgejo

Hi. I self-host gitea in docker and have a few repos, users, keys, etc. I installed forgejo in docker and it runs, so I stopped the container and copied /var/lib/docker/volumes/gitea_data/_data/* to /var/lib/docker/volumes/forgejo_data/_data/, but when I restart the forgejo container, forgejo doesn’t show any of my repos,...

anzo ,

No experience, but saw gorgeous has a guide to migrate. Their latest Blogpost states to do that ASAP coz they’re going to stop keeping the drop-in 1:1 replacement to advance in their cool feature set ;)

Your analogy doesn’t separate the facts that paying for content to the platform is not the same as paying for it directly to the creator. You, and many people, assume that a high % of what they pay really goes to the creator. That’s rarely the case

Also, it’s morally wrong that a platform charges you for content they didn’t create. Yet, know one seems to question that. I’m a bit pissed at people calling piracy morally questionable without looking into the concrete ‘harm’… Hence my post last week, copying is not theft.

The audios from Michel Thomas are great! +1

To those insisting on the wrong idea: how can you argue with the catchy lyrics of this song?! =P

anzo OP ,

Tbh, I was just trying to point out that being grateful is possible. In the same way that you return a smile, or give some money when buying goods or services in a context of a solidarity event. For example the other day people were selling hotdogs for “pay what you want” whole raising money for refugee kids. That’s how I approach this, copying/ piracy is “pay what you want” (to creators, not platforms). They made some effort to create it, yes. You are not taking anything from them. Nonetheless, you can express economically your gratitude for what they did. Like, homage to celebs.

anzo OP ,

Well, because they are under constant ‘attack’, shaming and/ or blaming. The very name is in that context. Affirming your identity then can’t be seen as putting excuses (unless if it were seen from the ‘attacker’ perspective, of course.)

I figured out how to make IPTV as easy as using Netflix so you dont have to (lemmy.myserv.one)

Disclaimer: Obviously this is for educational purposes only. I would personally never use my internet connection for anything illegal at all. I simply tested the below setup then deleted everything out of pure interest to understand how things worked and do not use any IPTV service. I love paying Netflix and other streaming...

The issue with real debrid is that it doesn’t take crypto iirc

Oh, I meant to be unwilling to give credit card details to an anonymous person running such a biz. I understand they’re not scammer, but nonetheless… I rather not risk it.

anzo ,

Try checking out KWallet settings. It’s the app in charge of saving passwords in KDE.

To be accurate, the ⭐ only has a mouth and 💩 goes that way ;)

Edit: I was wrong. Dismiss the comment!

Was’nt this person transphobic? To me that’s relevant. I wouldn’t like people giving them support in that case.

Glad to stand corrected!

Media sharing and collaborative curation software?

I’m looking for an open-source program compatible with Linux that facilitates media sharing and collaborative curation among users. The ideal software would enable sharing any media content while allowing multiple users to collectively organize and manage the content. I would still like to hear about any similar software, even...

Check Ombi.io , it’s the easiest hit for your usecase. Tbh, I thought overseerr or some other arr apps where taking requests from multiple users too and download all…

Craving for foods that fake your senses, sounds very much like drug abuse. As growing older I have been striving to avoid potato chips and go for fruits. Apples are sweet and crunchy. Clementine hydrates a lot. Banana provides potassium to avoid cramps, and so on. No junk food provides any of these… Yet, they entice us…

Even then, there’s dockerswarm.rocks (linking directly to tutorial to show how easy it is!)

How to drop files from Android to home server?

I’m looking for an easy way to upload files from my Android smartphone to my home server. is there a - ideally dockerized - solution for that? Some simple web GUI where I can click on “Upload” and the files will be saved to a certain directory on my home server?...

Being p2p is a huge bonus, it exceeds (and predates) the self-host category! If I recall correctly, I had an intro post to the system somewhere… can’t look it up ATM.

Movary comes to mind, and it can pull/ push info to accounts on third parties like tmdb.org

Self hosted syncthing relay with keepass, how secure is it?

I already have my keepassxc and syncthing setup on my phone and computers and it’s great, I’d like to go a step further and have my password database sync when I’m not on my home network. From my understanding I can use relays set up by other users and they are encrypted, but if I do not trust syncing personal (encrypted)...

anzo ,

Syncthing is p2p. The servers only see your devices IP addresses and let them connect to share data themselves. That’s why it’s a relay. But AFAIK files only goes from, and to, your syncthing clients; without passing through the relays. At most, the relay may see some metadata as filenames. I have been syncing passwords like this since long ago. Never jumped to Bitwarden because I didn’t had the need… May do so anyway because of OTP and Passkeys…

anzo ,

Oh, and the syncthing encryption that you may enable for the folders is for these devices/ clients. This may be useful is you were to use a third part machine, like a VPS, as a 24/ 7 node for your files. That’s different from a relay, may be desirable if you want to sync ASAP and avoid conflicts. In any case, conflicts are rare… you would need to open the DB and add entries at the same time, or some quirky scenario…

anzo ,

I understand AI well enough. The argument that companies training models on data with copyright were actually doing piracy holds true to me. Being in favor or against, since these are big corps using artists work without paying royalties is an open discussion maybe, but nonetheless… I felt that a clarification was due. Sorry (or not) to open the offtopic hatch…

Prowlarr vs overserr/jellyserr

I have bought my first proper home server and am setting up a full stack of media services on truenas scale after years of doing everything manually. In that regard I have set up jellyfin, sabnzbd and radarr, and the next step is to add jellyserr it seems. But then I stumble across prowlarr and cannot figure out if it is a...

anzo ,

Beware of radarr, if you remove a library there it clears all files without warning! (That’s why I came back to manual. Setup was a hassle, and having to come to a backup was the last drop in my glass)

Right now, yuzu emulator is being forked and taken over by multiple developers, re-releasing and promising to continue its development in spite of Nintendo lawyers. For example, nuzu. All this is to say that is not the best time for a newbie to jump in, unless they are willing to re-jump in whatever fork out there turns to have a good community of developers and resists Nintendo efforts to shut them off.

anzo ,

Truenas scale is Debian, if you just use it remotely it may be a good bet. If you may use the server as workstation (e.g. desktop) then you better use Debian itself (or both, as VMs under Proxmox). Managing ZFS is super easy, just create a couple of volumes with small and big blocksize, in either cockpit or whatever web ui. You may also switch OS (e.g. disaster or play around), and recover these effortlessly with zfs import command from CLI. Good luck!

Also, the number of seeds are a good measure for popularity of media that one might not had in their radar at all. Meanwhile, platforms try to push all sort of content only because they produced it, recommendation algorithms are needed (and insufficient), because there a huge load of crap being produced at such a high rate…

What is your preferred method for backing up several TB of data?

What storage software could I run to have an archive of my personal files (a couple TB of photos) that doesn’t require I keep a full local copy of all the data? I like the idea of a simple and focused tool like Syncthing, but they seem to be angling towards replication....

anzo ,

I think there’s a typo, didn’t you mean to write Stremio-torrentio-realdebrid? ;)

anzo ,

if IM was your need, check snikket.org although I can’t remember how well they support OTP encryption… of course it’s subjective how many layers one need, I’d be happy with just self-host and TLS, that’s how far I’d go for me and my relatives for day-to-day privacy.
