That’s what I love about Linux: you have options.

  • Security updates automatically, but only restart or do feature upgrades manually?
    • You got it.
  • Automatically update everything as soon as it comes out, with a little pop-up to let you know you should restart?
    • Sure thing boss.
  • Automate the entire process with reboots scheduled during off-hours?
    • No problem.
  • Never update anything without being asked?
    • There’s a setting for that.

It empowers the user to choose what works best for them.

My understanding is that Netanyahu allowed for funding from foreign nations to reach Hamas, but the money was largely coming from Iran. Did Israel directly fund Hamas?

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

So you are saying Iran funds Hamas?

I thought Iran’s support for Hamas was widely acknowledged.

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

The difference is that Iran was doing the funding while Netanyahu was facilitating it. The comment above criticized Iran for funding terrorists, and you said that by that token Israel should lose their nukes for funding Hamas, but it was Iran who was doing the funding.

I agree that what Israel did was fucked up, and absolutely no way for a nuclear power to behave. But it seems relevant to the conversation that the government writing the checks was Iran.

Where is that in the document? I tried to find it but it’s long and I couldn’t spot it. Weren’t the bombs dropped in August '45?

absentbird , (edited )
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

Thank you.

Reading it over, I can see that scenario would have involved continued fire bombing campaigns, which had already killed over 300,000 people and left over 8 million homeless. It also suggests that many of Japan’s 2 million troops and thousands of planes would have been destroyed before surrender.

It says the vast majority of people surveyed in Japan at the time were willing to continue fighting the war, and the political structure made surrender particularly unlikely.

What do you think the US should have done in 1945?

I saw a video from the UK where a guy charged a cop with a knife and the cop just smacked it out of his hand with a baton and put him in handcuffs. Police in the UK only shoot two or three people each year, and the per capita injuries to the police are lower, seems like a better system.

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

My understanding is that Hamas has also repeatedly broken ceasefires. It doesn’t seem like the ceasefire agreements are as effective as they should be.

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

I am by no means an expert, but I’ve been hearing about the conflict from both sides for several decades now. My take away is that both sides seem ideologically opposed to the existence of the other.

If Israel stopped all aggression today, I don’t think it would stop the rockets; likewise Palestine could halt all aggression and still be attacked by the IDF. Lasting peace will require a shift in perspective, which gets harder to imagine with every day of the invasion.

absentbird , (edited )
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

I can see an argument for Israel being the original aggressor, but the idea that Palestinians have never taken a turn is baffling.

If Israel were to cease all aggression immediately, would a lasting peace follow? It seems like a lot of people won’t be satisfied unless Israel is removed from the Levant.

@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

Would Hamas release the hostages and surrender if they did?

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

The religious texts aren’t an accurate historical record, but it is a fact that the Jewish culture and religion formed in that region. It’s backed up by multiple disciplines of study. Where do you think Judaism comes from if not the Levant?

absentbird ,
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

There have been times in the past when the Jewish population was largely displaced or converted, but there have been some number of Jewish people living there for thousands of years.

Genetic testing shows that 75% of modern Jewish people are descended from that region.

I’m not arguing entitlements or indigenous status, I’m saying that there’s ample scientific evidence regarding Judaism coming from the Levant.

It seems to be moving his actions somewhat. He’s calling for a ceasefire and airdropping aid to Gaza. I feel like a lot of that is due to pressure from constituents.

absentbird OP , (edited )
@absentbird@lemm.ee avatar

Congress controls the purse, they have been providing foreign aid to Israel since long before he was elected. Biden directs the armed forces, and is using them to supply aid to Gaza.

That said, the US has been ‘helping both sides’ for ages. We provide more money to Israel than any other country, and also contribute more to UNRWA than any other nation. The goal of the US has been to reach a two state solution, so it makes sense to fund both states.

I’m not saying you don’t own the data, I’m saying it’s more expensive than storing it yourself. Obviously it depends on the purpose and budget; if you need it to be highly available and secure, and you have thousands of dollars to direct to the project, the cloud is great. If you want to make a backup of all your DVDs that fits on a single disc, it might be overkill.

The sort of data suited to discs like this is probably pretty different than the sort of data suited to an S3 bucket. It could make a decent tertiary backup though, a local copy of your data stored on offline media can be a lifesaver.

This isn’t a competing technology to the cloud, it’s complimentary.
