Check out masto.host for managed hosting.

You can migrate away from them if you ever want to.

If you self host instead, make sure your server is on its own vlan. Servers are a target for exploitation, and you don’t want the rest of your home devices exposed if your server is compromised.

Note: A Pi probably has the CPU power, but the caching from the server may be more space than an SD card will hold.

If I understand correctly, it was originally implemented when they made it so you could use ssl to access your media without any configuration or cost: plex.tv/…/its-not-easy-being-green-secure-communi…

I also think you can watch locally without logging in, but, it’s a less than ideal way of doing it: www.plexopedia.com/…/plex-no-internet/

Unfortunately, the biggest red flag about Plex is that they now offer their own streaming media. That means they’re in bed with media companies which is at odds with the goals and needs of the original fans and users of Plex servers.

When I saw the first slow steps Plex’s encruddification, I was relieved to find out Jellyfin exists. I wish it had more features, but it’s being actively developed and totally usable already. Also, I’m not a fan of the name, but that’s a stupid thing to complain about.

Everyone you love leaves a mark on your soul. I know you can’t hug him anymore, but he’ll never really leave you.

I’ve had to make the call about furry family members half a dozen times, and it doesn’t get easier. Thankfully, they gave me so many happy memories. I wouldn’t choose to spare myself the pain by giving up the love.

I wouldn’t worry about finding a new cat. I believe they seek you out when you’re ready.

Introverts of Lemmy, what do you do when you feel lonely?

First time I’ve been feeling lonely this year, ik this is in stark contrast with the time of the year but I wasn’t able to perform in my school annual function (I really wanted to) and for some reason I have been feeling lonely since, what do you do when you feel like this?

Is there an activity you like doing that you wouldn’t mind having company for? It could be something at home like building a Lego set, or outdoors like a walk through the park or zoo. When you’ve selected your activity, pick one person and ask them to join you.

People do best with being asked about a specific activity, place, day, and time. Hopefully they’ll offer an alternative if your suggestion doesn’t work for them. If they don’t, and if you’re set on that person, ask them if another time would work, or do they have an activity in mind.

I find being an introvert doesn’t mean “no people” as much as it means “the right people.”

Seems like a typical copyright issue. The copyright owner has a monopoly on the intellectual property, but there are (genuine reasons) fair use exceptions (for journalism, satire, academic, backup, etc.)

Many offer virtual appointments and sliding scales. Some offer groups you can join (cheaper and you can benefit from other’s similar experiences).
