Chess is free to play now, but for centuries it was more like shareware.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

You can play online and there are tons of free apps, but it used to be that someone had to purchase a set to be able to share it with their friends. Though since making copies would have been difficult I guess it would have been more like Mario Party than the first nine levels of Doom.

I’m pretty sure that was in the ‘yes, but also no’ category. IIRC, they don’t see very well and small fast things on the ground spook them, probably because snakes. Pick a mouse up and bring it up high enough for the elephant to get a good look at it and they’re fine with it.

I think everyone got it out eventually, but I know they rolled it out in stages based on total karma. The more karma you had, the earlier you got the IPO email. And they didn’t distinguish between post and comment karma. I had almost no post karma, but 402k comment karma (mostly from account age), so I got emailed pretty early.

Heretics and Chapterhouse are also weirdly horny. Sure, sex was always a big part of how the Bene Gesserit operated, but when they were made the hero faction it got… weird…

Those two books also fully raised Duncan to be the main character, though, and they introduced Miles Teg, so they have that going for them.

Paul’s son is the God Emperor, not Paul. Paul’s reign was actually pretty short, all things considered.

Little do people know the real main character of the saga died in the first act of the first book.

Trump Apparently Has a List of Things He Loves About Adolf Hitler (newrepublic.com)

In the movie, the first time Paul uses a thumper he has to dig in a few spots before he finds one that the thumper will work on.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

‘Ornithopter’ also isn’t a term Herbert invented. It’s an actual word for an aircraft that flaps its wings to fly, like an animal. So he’s really complaining about the presence of 'thopters. Different propulsion techs for different situations makes a lot of sense, though; it’s not like VTOL jets made helicopters obsolete even though they’re superficially a superior option.

Seriously, the Fire Nation had mass produced internal combustion engines in ATLA. They put them in their mass produced tanks. Not to mention the fleet of ships with smokestacks indicating they probably had either diesel or steam powered ships. The Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are both still in the process of industrializing, but the Fire Nation was already pretty much there, and the United Republic is primarily a Fire Nation breakaway state.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

TLOK does depict a railway network having been set up through the Earth Kingdom after the war. The Earth Kingdom as a whole is still very far behind in industrialization, though.

Emperor: Battle for Dune was also fun.

Edit: And now that I think about it, Dune 2000 is a the remake, of Dune 2, specifically.

I don’t like a few of the changes they make to gameplay. In particular, I don’t like being able to build more than one structure at a time. I know RA2 started it, but I didn’t like it in RA2, either. Being able to build a power-hungry defensive structure and the power plant to run it at the same time takes out some of the strategy, in my opinion.

They’re also not technically dinosaurs due to the heavy amounts of DNA splicing they had to do to make them viable, being more like a designer monster that resembles a dinosaur. There’s a ton of non-dino DNA in them.

I think it’s more that you have to purchase the item before you can agree to the EULA. That said, it’s extremely rare for anyone to try and challenge them in court, and when they do they pretty much always settle so the court can’t actually demand any changes to EULAs.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

Might be able to use the uranium to heat water for a steam turbine generator.

VindictiveJudge ,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but someone else was wanting to use the motorcycle engine as a generator. I feel like this is more practical since you don’t need to figure out how to get more fuel. Not that I have any idea what to do with a generator in that time period either way.

In the article they mentioned that they just assumed that a 4k 2 hour long movie is 14GB.

That’s more what I would expect out of a 1080p movie on a disc. If I have 200TB to play with, I’m not going to care much about compressing the video any more than what the disc it originally came off of was at since artifacts could be introduced. Sure, I probably wouldn’t notice most artifacts, but with that much storage even the massive 100GB rips would be a drop in the bucket so why risk it?

Could we see these as competitors to HDDs? 200TB is friggin insane, at a good price you’d be spending 2 grand on that much HDD storage.

I doubt it would compete with HDD for home use. Loading times off of optical discs are atrocious. Just archiving data, sure, but my HDDs actually still have games on them that I run. Old games, sure, but not something where more storage would be worth the reduced read/write speeds. Maybe for a home video server, but that’s about it, and there’s going to be some significant loading compared to current servers with HDDs.

They already did. The percentage range on your phone’s battery display is basically a usable range rather than an absolute range. The article talks about phone manufacturers making changes to their charging systems to optimize battery function, but the headline bit about not charging past a certain point has been taken into account by Android and iOS for ages.
