Free speech is good and must be protected

I agree, but Twitter has nothing to do with free speech. Period. It’s not like the government is going around throwing people in prison for being racist fucks on Twitter. Twitter can moderate content if they want to. If they don’t want to moderate content they don’t have to as long as the material isn’t illegal.

I don’t know why people keep thinking this has anything to do with the first amendment at all. Twitter is not public, not even close.

You’re assuming everyone with college loans has a degree which is not always true. Plenty of people take out loans intending to get a degree and don’t make it all the way. Those loans don’t just go away. Now they are paying towards a loan while having none of the benefits from having a degree.

It’s pretty easy to understand why many people with student loans might be making less than ~$30k a year if you think about it a little bit.

I worked at a tiny hospital in a rural area as the sole IT admin. They hired a new Director of Nursing, a very long process because we were so rural it was very difficult to convince people to move out there to work. They had helped her find and buy a house, helped her husband get a job in the area, enrolled their kids in the local school system. They had me buy a new computer specifically for her and asked me to come in early and be available to help with any computer problems on her first day.

She didn’t show up at all that day. People were pretty panicked about it. Next day she did show up, although about an hour late (not that anyone complained about it) and they rolled out the red carpet and everything. I spent most of the morning helping her get access to things and then she was off to more important things.

Next day she didn’t show up at all again.

That one orientation meeting was the only time I ever saw her, a few days later they asked me to terminate her accounts, preserve emails and pull security camera footage. I still don’t know what was going on. Drugs? If she had another job opportunity it seems pretty crazy to buy a house and move your whole family. She almost certainly would have been the highest paid employee, probably within the top 5 for the whole town.

But yeah, I guess if you don’t show up and don’t have a good excuse things end pretty quickly.

Net Neutrality doesn’t affect web sites and services, just how ISPs deliver content. Twitter doesn’t have to remain neutral, they can block, throttle or redirect whatever they want. We need to stop pretending like they are a town square, they aren’t and we shouldn’t expect them to behave like they are.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

I mean it’s shitty, but they are allowed to do it and probably should be allowed to do it. They aren’t a public space even if they like to pretend like they are. Opaquely slowing down access to sites they don’t like is pretty sketchy, but you can imagine if I started a Twitter competitor I might decide that I want to block outgoing links to sites spreading misinformation like InfoWars or something like that.

The government probably shouldn’t step in and force me to allow those outgoing links in the name of ‘neutrality’. It would be my right to control what content is posted to the website that I run. It’s probably more ethical if I tell people what I’m doing and why, but no one is required to be there.

I watched Hudson Hawk for the first time a couple years ago and it’s one of the most fun, insane, over the top weird movies I’ve ever seen. Even stranger knowing that Bruce Willis had wanted to do this cat burglar character for years prior.

I don’t even know what comes close as far as times I’ve said “What the fuck?” while watching a movie. It’s great.

Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

Jackett's manual search is so, so good (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

To be clear, this is just a joke, and I don’t look down on direct downloading. It absolutely has its place, and sometimes I do it myself if it’s just faster to download a file directly. Torrenting is just so much more convenient, though, especially when using Jackett’s manual search.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Not uncommon. I run wireguard in a docker container for Mullvad and then set my qBittorent container to use the network of the wireguard container. If you do something like this you’ll need to set routing rules on the VPN so the web interface of your torrent client is accessible over your LAN for the *arr stack. The wireguard docs have a decent guide on how to do this, shouldn’t be a problem on OpenVPN either.

At least Elden Ring added a “Quit to Desktop” option. Any games before that… no you have to exit back to the title screen and be subjected to several seconds of extremely loud gothic chanting before you’re allowed to exit the game. One way to make credit scores more consumer friendly would be to make it totally transparent what data is collected, retained and transmitted when calculating the score. If you want to open a new line of credit, instead of having businesses look up all this shit behind your back you’d request a letter of credit and provide it to the business yourself, knowing exactly what is in it.

But no, instead it’s a total mystery how it is calculated and you just have to hope that they don’t get confused and make a mistake because it can wreck your life if they do.

Does the HDR tone mapping work for other users? I have an HDR capable OLED but most of my friends using my Plex server have TVs with no HDR support so the HDR content I download looks like ass for them. I’d like to fix that, but not if every single user has to pay for it.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

HDR to SDR tone mapping support is currently available as a Plex Pass preview and requires an active Plex Pass subscription for the main Plex Media Server account.

Okay cool, so it sounds like it would fix this issue for all my users as long as I maintain Plex Pass or buy a lifetime subscription. I might consider this since it’s easier than talking my friends into investing in a nice HDR TV or watching shows from their house and feeling pained that they don’t seem to care.

Exactly. If the networks faced consequences for knowingly routing and profiting off these illegal phone calls they would stop fairly quickly.

If Trump is elected do you think that his administration would be more friendly to unions than the Biden administration?

If you’re mad about Biden forcibly ending the rail strike (which was honestly infuriating) you should know that his administration continued to work with the labor union afterward to negotiate a deal while also avoiding a disastrous economic shutdown that would have resulted from the strike. Could Biden have done more to get a deal without forcing an end to the strike? Maybe. Should he have let the economy collapse in order to support labor rights? Maybe, but I understand why he didn’t.

Biden was basically my last choice of the field of democrats running in 2020 but I don’t know what anyone else would have done to achieve better results.

Standing up email might not be that hard… but it’s much harder to ensure that your mail will actually be delivered successfully. Plus it’s not a service you can typically afford to go down. Any emails you miss during that downtime are gone forever, whereas even if my Vaultwarden credential vault goes down I can access passwords from a device that has things cached at least while I fix things.

Plus the big providers just treat small mail servers with a lot more skepticism than they did 20 years ago.

This is definitely one of the things I originally didn’t like about Souls games that have come to realize is a pretty cleverly designed mechanic. Earning enough souls to purchase something shouldn’t take very long and it if is, then it means you already have what you need to be succeeding in your current area. The ‘git gud’ joke is worn out, but genuinely you just need to learn how to face off with enemies (or run past them) until they stop being scary.

The game will not let you progress without learning how to engage with the systems it presents to you. There are typically several or many viable strategies, you just have to figure out what works for you.

By the time you’re dragging yourself through a toxic poison swamp you’ll realize that your level is just a number and nothing lasts forever.

I agree with fishing mini games, it’s almost never anything like actual fishing, but some sort of weird experience that requires a combination of precise timing, button mashing or both.

That being said I think it’s insane to me that Nintendo crammed a fishing mini game in basically every Zelda game except for BotW and TotK, the two games where it would actually make sense. I just wanna chill and throw out a line. It’s every other zelda game where I just did the minimum amount required to get a bottle or whatever I needed.

Death Stranding 100% gets this right, although it’s a bit weird in the end-game when your optimal choice is typically some combination of vehicles and ziplines.

Paying attention to the elevation, pathing around rocks and trying to stay level is a lot more fun than it sounds. Some of the best moments in that game it just lets some chill music play while you carefully walk from A-B and it’s a ton of fun the whole time.

Then you finally reach your destination and the story feels almost entirely detached from the walking experience and characters with the dumbest names imaginable explain some made up bullshit to you for 45 minutes.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Okay yeah that seems like a fair trade then. I loved the 6P until it started having hardware problems. A semi scraped up the whole drivers side of my car by merging into my lane without paying attention and I had to pull over to call the police. This was mid-january which was quite cold so my 6P kept dying on me due to undervolting even though the battery was full. It made it impossible to get the police out to me which in turn made it impossible for me to get the drivers insurance to cover the damage to my vehicle.

So technically the 6P probably cost me a couple thousand dollars in insurance payout… but two years later someone hit my car and totaled it so I got paid out for the whole thing anyway. Lucky me I guess.
