TORFdot0 , (edited ) to fediverse in Why isn't there a Harry Potter-themed Lemmy instance yet?

Most of the people on the fediverse are adults who are most likely going to join either a general instance or a themed instance for interests for adults and not for a children’s book series, especially not one with a TERFy author

People like SpongeBob, I don’t think there is interest for a SpongeBob instance. Nevertheless if you think there is interest in it, feel free to host your own.

It depends on how heavy handed the approach is. A kid could learn about using a vpn or proxy service to bypass dns or dpi based content filtering but if you properly configure the parental controls on iOS or android there is pretty much nothing they are going to be able to do. If they are that determined, I think you need to have a conversation about making good choices themselves and trusting them not to consume harmful content.

I was able to bypass the content filters on the PCs when I was in high school because it was a shitty content filter that could be bypassed by killing the process in an unelevated task manager. My kids are going to have to be more resourceful than that

TORFdot0 , to technology in Content is King? - How it sucked out the joy of personal websites

I absolutely agree on that last point. The web has become so SEO and algorithmically focused and that’s why I’m so all in on the fediverse to put power back into the hands of the people and not whoever can use an LLM to crank out content to exploit the algorithms

TORFdot0 , to technology in Content is King? - How it sucked out the joy of personal websites

I’ve always considered that I make my personal site for me and write for my own knowledge management. So a lot of my writings are guides on how to do something so I won’t forget.

I’m also not a great writer so I don’t know if I would want the wider internet looking at my stuff

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in Is it just me, or have the comments on Lemmy become extra aggressive over the past 3 months?

I think there are more bummer world events happening like the Israel Hamas war and bummer late stage capitalism in general which leads to more inflammatory and charged discourse, compared to just after the Reddit exodus when we were united against Reddit.

Lemmy in general isn’t different from other social media in that it isn’t great for political discourse. Without the human connection there is less incentive to consider the experience and viewpoints of others when you can just downvote and read a hundred that agree with you

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in What smaller community do you wish had more visibility?

American Football to be specific. Although, honestly now that its the NFL fantasy offseason, I wouldn’t mind seeing some PL content.

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in What smaller community do you wish had more visibility?

!FantasyFootball can always use more contributors, especially now that its during the offseason!

TORFdot0 , to technology in Reddit seeks to launch IPO in March

It’s not the IPO that will cause the exodus. Its the first actions that Reddit takes to appease shareholders that will cause people to leave

TORFdot0 , to technology in Researcher uncovers one of the biggest password dumps in recent history

They can use the information to try to send you fake invoices to try to scam you, or use your personal information to social engineer you or your relatives, attempt identity theft etc. Basic info-sec is still important. It’s like leaving the bathroom door open when you poop. It probably isn’t going to hurt you if you leave it open but its still probably a good idea to shut the door if its a public restroom

TORFdot0 , to technology in Reddit seeks to launch IPO in March

Well we have 6 weeks to prepare for the next mass exodus lads and lassies

TORFdot0 , to technology in Don't expect iPhone apps to get cheaper now that you can pay for them outside of the App Store

There is no free lunch. Even if you aren’t paying for apps, you are still paying for them. Even FOSS apps, your share is just being paid for by the kindness of the developers or other community members who donate to fund development.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Teen deepfake victim pushes for federal law targeting AI-generated explicit content

(d) Limitations.—For purposes of this section, a provider of an interactive computer service shall not be held liable on account of—

“(1) any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of intimate digital depictions; or

“(2) any action taken to enable or make available to information content providers or other persons the technical means to restrict access to intimate digital depictions.

I appreciate your reading into the text. I am not a lawyer so it isn’t always clear how to read the legal language crafted into these bills. Since the quoted part of the law is under the criminal penalty section of the bill, I read it as releasing the service provider from criminal liability if they try to stop the distribution of it. I see your point as how you read it and that makes sense to me

TORFdot0 , to technology in Teen deepfake victim pushes for federal law targeting AI-generated explicit content

Section 2252D (a) Offense.—Whoever, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, discloses or threatens to disclose an intimate digital depiction—

“(1) with the intent to harass, annoy, threaten, alarm, or cause substantial harm to the finances or reputation of the depicted individual; or

“(2) with actual knowledge that, or reckless disregard for whether, such disclosure or threatened disclosure will cause physical, emotional, reputational, or economic harm to the depicted individual,

So the law requires intent and carves out exceptions for service providers that try to remove it.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Teen deepfake victim pushes for federal law targeting AI-generated explicit content

the text of the bill exempts service providers from any liabilities as long as they make a good faith attempt to remove it as soon as they are aware of its existence. So if someone makes AI generated revenge porn on your instance as long as you take it down when notified, you want be in trouble.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Teen deepfake victim pushes for federal law targeting AI-generated explicit content

If the laws on the books aren’t being enforced by the local executive branch because they don’t understand the technology or terminology and see where it applies the re-writing the law so its more clear what the crime was and how the law can be enforced is absolutely an option.

The article states that there is no federal law governing the use and abuse of non-consensual deepfakes. The proposed bill also offers additional protections for victims. Putting that on the books isn’t a waste time or money. If the patchwork of local laws were working then this young woman wouldn’t be asking her congressperson of change.

So I respectfully disagree with your take that it is political grandstanding and unnecessary.
