TORFdot0 , to technology in ICYMI: Some of Apple's EU changes are coming only to the iPhone, not the iPad.

Typical 9to5mac and Macrumors comment section experience

TORFdot0 , to technology in We Asked A.I. to Create the Joker. It Generated a Copyrighted Image.

You can hardly consider it compression when you need a compute expensive model with hundreds of gigabytes (if not bigger) to accurately rehydrate it

TORFdot0 , to technology in Taylor Swift is living every woman’s AI porn nightmare — Deepfake nudes of the pop star are appearing all over social media. We all saw this coming.

A deep fake is still humiliating

TORFdot0 , to technology in Apple's New Fees Will Kill Free Apps

The rules are in place solely to lock in free apps to the official App Store. The EU is just going to have to tell Apple to deal with it. Apple is acting like it has to verify and sign every app that runs on its platform and therefore it justifies the fees. The EU just needs to force Apple to allow unsigned apps to run and then its not a problem.

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in Lemmings, do you use any social media outside of the Fediverse?

I have a Facebook account still. Mainly to communicate with different groups that I’m a part of in real life. If it wasn’t for that I would delete it. My wife still has an instagram account and so I have one that I’ve never posted to just because sometimes she uses the stories feature to share short little fun recordings of the kids and so I want to be able to back them up since they don’t get saved on device by default. I have linked-in for professional reasons but I literally on ever log in to update my resume.

I deleted twitter and reddit back in June.

TORFdot0 , to technology in US National Security Agency buys web browsing data without warrant, letter shows

John Oliver was able to buy data of politicians to get them to click on porn of Ted Cruz or something a long those lines. Thats the route we have to go to get this changed. Like when leaking Bork’s video rental history got privacy protections passed in the 80s

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Theory Suggests Chatbots Can Understand Text

If you could travel back in time and observe a person over and over again react the same way is it different from observing a video tape?

Does traveling back in time guarantee that someone would react the same way in the same situation even?

TORFdot0 , to memes in Animation =/= for kids

I agree with you mostly. And censoring swears from media aimed at children, doesn’t prevent kids from wanting to experiment with the taboo. But I’d rather have children’s media model good behavior, and while swearing isn’t always profane or disrespectful, it often is. And being able to differentiate the context is a learned social skill that kids won’t master until that kind of content is appropriate.

This last quote really has nothing to do with my argument but I just like it. “Profanity is the linguistic crutch of inarticulate fuckheads”. I want to teach my children to articulate themselves well and save the profane for when it makes the most impact.

TORFdot0 , to memes in Animation =/= for kids

It’s still probably not best to not model disrespectful and irreverent language to impressionable kids until they learn the social skills of when it is and isn’t appropriate. I don’t want Bluey to tell her dad to “Fuck off wanker”

TORFdot0 , to technology in Netflix wants to retire basic ad-free plan in some countries, shareholder letter says

If new releases aren’t going to be available in stores, I simply won’t watch them when they come to home video anymore. The upside would be that I will be more motivated to see movies while they are still in theaters which I’ve sorely lacked going to see them ever since the pandemic

TORFdot0 , to technology in Netflix wants to retire basic ad-free plan in some countries, shareholder letter says

The quality of Netflix content does not reflect cost of the subscription. I’m back to buying DVDs

TORFdot0 , to technology in Stop using Opera Browser and Opera GX

Sadly chromium is often the only supported browser for a lot of web apps. Sometimes not even chromium but just chrome in particular. Chrome has basically inherited all the downsides of internet explorer of yesteryear except it doesn’t run like shit yet.

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Theory Suggests Chatbots Can Understand Text

That is the quote from the article, not my words. Stochastic parrot is an oxymoron.

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Theory Suggests Chatbots Can Understand Text

How do you know a human wouldn’t do the same? We lack the ability to perform the experiment.

I agree with you, I think its an interesting philosophical debate on whether we truly have free will, if we really have a level of understanding beyond LLMs do or if we are just a greatly more complex, biological version of an LLM. Like you said, we lack the ability to perform the experiment so I have to assume that our reactions are novel and spontaneous.

TORFdot0 , to sysadmin in VMWare FUD. Anyone moving away from it professionally?

When Broadcom acquired Symantec our pricing and customer service for SEPM went to shit. I’d be looking to switch if I was on VMWare. If it’s a small deployment, probably to native hyper-V and windows. Larger deployment, I’d be looking to change careers
