TORFdot0 , (edited ) to asklemmy in How do scammers overtake a youtube account with 2fa enabled

If he wasn’t trying to log in then how did he have anywhere to input a 2FA code? If he was trying to log in its possible that his PC was compromised by malware and he got his credentials + 2FA stolen by EvilProxy

Edit: checked out a bit of the video for context. It sure sounds like that it was probably bad 2FA set up. Does Google still support security questions? If he’s had partner for a decade then surely security questions were set up as a second factor. I don’t know if they are still supported though

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in Change my mind: The Fediverse is not as connected as were told, and it's splintering even more.

If it’s not centralized then that’s where the trust issues come in. How can I trust another node on the network that I should authenticate User X when I don’t have the secret key?

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in Change my mind: The Fediverse is not as connected as were told, and it's splintering even more.

In my opinion a centralized authentication platform such as that requires a single point of failure or a level of trust between instances that isn’t and in my opinion shouldn’t be allowed as it would increase the attack surface for bad actors to exploit.

I think the best way would be for the community to create a docker image or other out of box solution that makes it easy for instance hosts to support multiple services on different subdomains from a single endpoint with shared authentication and as such your lemmy.example.com credentials would work for mastodon.example.com and would work for pixelfed.example.com and would work for peertube.example.com and so on and so forth.

ActivityPub does not have support for private messages. Services that try to shoehorn a direct message as “private” are misusing the protocol. You could configure client-side encryption but thats outside the scope of ActivityPub

TORFdot0 , to technology in GTA 5 Actor Ned Luke Calls Out 'Bulls**t' AI Chatbot That Uses His Voice

Replacing an assembly line worker with a more efficient machine creates jobs as the machines need to be manufactured, serviced, designed, and replaced. Jobs are created in shipping and logistics as factories are able to create more product. Meanwhile the costs of goods go down and benefits the whole economy.

Art is uniquely human. Art is sacred. Art created wholly by a machine with nothing but a human prompt is not art. People using AI to rip off content from existing YouTubers and reupload it with AI generated voice and script rewrites aren’t making art. People who use AI to create demented kids videos so they can steal from advertisers are definitely not creating art. Someone who may use an AI narration and AI assisted graphics may be creating something worth calling art but it’s going to be seen as lesser by everyone else.

Hollywood executives using AI to replace extras, writers and talent are not causing more jobs to be created else in the economy, they are not causing the costs of entertainment to go down, and they aren’t making it more accessible for creatives to make it in mainstream entertainment. It is a net-drag.

I’m not saying your opinion is wrong, just that I disagree with it on the arbitrary standard that art is sacred.

Hiring a sound-alike isn’t taking a job out of the economy for one. The original voice is able to accept the job at the pay rate the sound-alike took usually.

Not to mention impersonators are usually doing the voice according to parody/fair-use

Nobody wants to end people using AI to make Johnny Cash sing “Barbie Girl”, but using it to replace Keanu Reeves in John Wick 8 for instance would be across the line. Recasting the role is one thing, but replacing the human altogether is another.

Seriously, just pay the licensing fee to the patent holder. For as much as their customers have paid them over the years, they can afford it.

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in What are the practical benefits of the fediverse?

The advantages of the fediverse are that there is no central ownership or structure of data. Your data is just your data, and your instance is just where you decide to host it.

You can sign up on one mastodon instance and start tooting and gather a following, if your mastodon instance starts enforcing rules that you don’t agree with (such as federating/defederating with meta) then your following belongs to you, not your mastodon instance and you can migrate your account.

Similarly the different services are just ways to present the same data as delivered by ActivityPub. I can access data posted to a Lemmy instance from Mastodon. I can follow pixelfed accounts from Mastodon. I can follow Mastodon users from Kbin, etc.

Right now big social media is like writing in the guest book and they let people look at it if you fill their requirements.

Federated social media is like sending an email to a public inbox that anyone can subscribe to as long as their instance maintains good standing with the sender.

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in What are the practical benefits of the fediverse?

You can still subscribe to the community on the boogered instance from your new instance. And if it’s bad, people are going to start to subscribe to another community on the same topic on another instance with you. And it can have the same name, you don’t even have to call it r/the_true_real_feet pics like you do when a community splinters on reddit

TORFdot0 , to technology in AI girlfriend bots are already flooding OpenAI’s GPT store

In my opinion, it’s immoral to profit off of someone’s loneliness. Of course that’s a huge sector of the economy now and why dating apps focus on vapid, meaningless hookups rather than finding real working relationships, and cam girls exploiting whales, so on a so forth.

But I still think that things like AI girlfriends promote isolation, hostility, and anti-social behaviors that are harmful to society.

Honestly we all carry a barcode scanner in our pockets. If I were running a grocery store, I’d be investing in scan and go instead of self checkout

Your posts are all public and discoverable by web crawlers even if your instance didn’t federate at all. That’s kind of the point of activityPUB
