Lukoshenko did say that Prigozhin is moving freely in Russia, as opposed to staying in Belarus, as negotiated. Something might be brewing.

@fediverse posting this from mastodon. It's amazing if this works!

Edit: it worked! Showed up in my Lemmy feed.

All your server are belong to us 🤖

If Lemmy and Mastodon continues to get popular, we will eventually get Instance wars.

If the descentralization of social networks continue, we will have to prepare for the eventual rise of the instances wars, where people will start to fight about which instance is better and which one is weird to be in and so on, but that’s for the future of us all.

Interesting to hear this from a dirty lemmy.fmhy.ml-er! 😈

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Why are you selecting for long names? 😅

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

These are upvotes and downvotes. I doubt views are logged anywhere, apart from the webserver.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Imo, Reddit has no moat. Twitter’s only moat is community notes. In principle, community notes could be replicated and scaled to the size of the internet, adding comments to any arbitrary link and run like Wikipedia.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Big true! I’m actually spending most of my time on Lemmy down in the comment section 😁

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

In terms of an optimal load spread, it’s best if the lemmiverse is split into multiple equally sized instances. If you use an instance just for yourself, it doesn’t actually decrease the load on the main servers in any way. The only thing you get is a guarantee that your instance won’t suddenly go down.

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. (restoreprivacy.com)

“When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices. The only information that is stored on the Signal servers for each account is the phone number you registered with, the date and time you joined the service, and the date you last logged on.”...

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Depends on the use case. For one on one messaging or small group chats, Signal is great! If you need a Slack/Discord replacement, Matrix is your go to.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

I use Signal as my main messenger and it works just fine. The only drawback is phone number requirement, but it is simpler for casual users. I’d really want them to add an alternative, more secure and private signup method.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Are you fundamentally against crypto? Not all crypto are scams.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Hmmm… Looks good! I’ll keep an eye on it.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Wait, there doesn’t seem to be any encryption in Revolt. 🤔

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Looks like it’s in the plans, by default. All good.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

The main problem with XMPP is that there is literally no clients with good UI.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

I’d be fine with using it as my messenger of choice if they open sourced it and allowed us to run our own servers

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

For one on one chats and group chats, Signal and Telegram have about the same experience. Telegram’s main feature, imo, is the public channels.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Are there any people left who use just 1 app for messaging? There’s WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Signal, Telegram, Viber, WeChat, Snapchat, Discord, Slack, Line, etc, etc. And these are just the main ones.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

You did see this coming, but I don’t understand why people associate Telegram with security in any way. It openly states that it’s not end to end encrypted and everything is visible to the server! And if you enable end to end encryption for a particular chat, its functionality is severely restricted.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

I’m particularly interested in things like Arweave. Smart contracts are cool too, though, to be actually useful, governments need to embrace them.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Makes sense. I also use all kinds of messengers. But it just so happens that the people I communicate with the most also use Signal 😁

Is Lemmy searchable from search engines such as Google?

Part of the utility of Reddit to me was the ability to append “Reddit” to searches and be served relevant threads to my search query since Reddit was one of the last places to get information from real people. This has proven to be invaluable in troubleshooting. Is this possible with Lemmy or the greater Fediverse? As we...

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

It’s searchable, but not sure how good the SEO is. They need to add the Open Graph tags!

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

ping 'em!

But really, just browse for a bit and see if it’s comfortable for you.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

There are ping apps on mobile as well

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Definitely. For one, lemmy is something I’d actually want to support, whereas I’ve always been ambivalent to reddit. But also, the user base on lemmy right now is probably closer to my interests than average.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Plus, I’m sometimes weary of interacting with posts, fearing that it might affect what gets recommended to me. Here, I’m pretty sure there’s no such algo!

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Might have been written by ChatGPT? lol. He does have a point though, if someone wants to contribute, it’d be nice to know what the devs would actually merge.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Ah, PR

@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

This dude literally understood infinity in the shower… Image

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Limits are cool 😁 They open the door to all the 20th century maths and physics. I still don’t understand how infinity is treated to get the result that the sum of all natural numbers is -1/12 though. That must use some different definitions, but I’m not sure what.

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Are there really over 10 million lemmy users? I almost don’t believe it

SomeOtherUsername ,
@SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Ahhhh, makes more sense. Mastodon blew up considerably earlier.

    What lemmy devs need to do is to allow database sharding. Instead of 1 postgres, allow specifying an arbitrary number and shard by community or, maybe, even post ID.

    SomeOtherUsername ,
    @SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

    Oof

    SomeOtherUsername ,
    @SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

    I’m using the browser from my laptop (phone screens are too small when the laptop’s there) and lemmy is surprisingly good in all aspects. The only UI issue noticeable to me is that it doesn’t remember my previous position in the feed when I press back, but that’s also the case in many large platforms, lol.

    SomeOtherUsername ,
    @SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

    So I just use tabs

    SomeOtherUsername ,
    @SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com avatar

    As more and more people get direct fibre optic connections, this advantage will get smaller and smaller…

    SomeOtherUsername ,

    Tbh, .world and .social TLDs are just better 🤷‍♂️

    Does “Reject All” also object to legitimate interest?
