Here I am… Joined Lemmy.ml because it was supposed to be a security, privacy and FOSS focused community. Now people are probably going to block seeing my comments.

SolNine ,

Honestly, I joined Lemmy pretty early on… So I have no idea if I even had to type that, if I did, I have no recollection of it.

SolNine ,

The simple solution is not to rely upon AI. It’s like a misinformed relative after a jar of moonshine, they might be right some of the time, or they might be totally full of shit.

I honestly don’t know why people are obsessed with relying on AI, is it that difficult to look up the answer from a reliable source?

SolNine ,

The people here are such fucking morons… Yes, let’s ban WIND POWER, literally one of the oldest forms of clean energy generation. I swear if I didn’t have family here I’d be gone.

SolNine ,

I have news for you, as an old millennial, it’s not just G Zers.

SolNine ,

I have to tell you, I know many intelligent people that have succumbed to propaganda, and outrage porn addiction. I see it continue to happen on all sides of the political isle. (This isn’t a both sides kind of statement, simply acknowledgement that the same tactics work on our brain, indifferent of political ideology.)

Whether they are hooked on the dopamine rush of rage baiting up votes, likes or comments; or only seeing everything in the world through a myopic lens of negativity, it has captured many of my friends and family, including myself for a time.

For some their drug is Fox News, others it’s Reddit, Facebook or TikTok, the results are often the same.

I have yet to figure out a manner in which to communicate with individuals who spend considerable amounts of time in echo chambers, constantly having their personal beliefs reinforced. Evasion of cognitive dissonance and social conflict are very powerful psychological motivations. I wish I knew the solution.

SolNine ,

Given the reality that Linux simply isn’t viable for some people (including myself), I highly recommend using this tool.

christitus.com/windows-tool/

Between this, and manually uninstalling a lot of bloat (or using a specific type of windows install) and a few other tweaks, windows becomes significantly more usable.

Disabling garbage in the task bar, removing Cortana and indexing services, etc etc, it can also add a fairly decent uplift in performance.

I’m sure there is still telemetry being collected but significantly less and less impact on my user experience and day to day performance.

Oh and make sure you turn off auto/feature updates!

SolNine ,

Only a few more years now till the retro sound of CDs comes back into style. I realize vinyl is a great and unique user experience with a specific timber, and more enjoyable to collect.

It’s kind of funny when you hear about the “analog warmth” when albums were being digitally mastered as early as the late 70s… And pretty much all re-releases are digitally remastered.

SolNine , (edited )

I think you missed my sarcasm…

Edited to add: most CDs sound the same as their digital releases (assuming they had the same master which I’ve found isn’t always true), but occasionally you can actually get higher resolution, up to 96k/24 bit, which do sound different depending on your playback device.

Most of the difference is likely due to the nature of the DA filter being applied during playback, as I certainly won’t notice the noise floor between 16-24 bit, and any frequency difference is far far behind my range of hearing.

If you aren’t familiar with what I’m referring too, different DA implementations use varying filtering techniques, some have a slight roll off in the upper frequency range to improve the accuracy of transient response, while others use a flatter frequency response sacrificing the transient. Newer DAs from some manufacturers allow you to select which option you prefer. At double and quad sample rates this can largely become a moot point as any sacrifice to the frequency response is far out of the range of human hearing.

SolNine ,

I’m a professional audio engineer for a living, with a masters in the subject, it was sarcasm lol…

SolNine ,

Lol, knew it was coming!

SolNine ,

I think the mixing being different is likely dependent upon how good the engineer and mastering engineers are/were. I’d wager a fair number of bands releasing their albums to vinyl these days simply send over a very similar final master (maybe slightly less loud if you are lucky) to the vinyl cutting without much thought, because it’s the hip thing to do.

You are accurate, that they should ensure that low frequencies are mono compatible, but it is likely less of an issue for the style of music most associated with vinyl releases (indi etc), as stylistically they don’t tend to use stereo widening on low frequency instruments. Generally they have kick and bass down the center channel, or I suppose going mono style out of L/R if they are trying to be really old school, but that would likely take a completely different mix adding to production budget as I can’t imagine if would work to well on phones etc, which a lof of music is mix for unfortunately.

None of the artists I produce or mix for have requested it yet, but if they did I would send them to Fuller Sound Mastering as Michael has been around for ages and knows how to handle masters for vinyl.

Vinyl cutting also has an EQ curve offset that is printed into the vinyl itself, cutting the bass and boosting the high frequency, which is then re-applied by the players preamp circuitry, I believe it’s referred to as pre and de-emphasis. Funny enough my mastering DAC actually has this feature for some kind of old early CD technology for some lower resolution digital formats that had issues with noise and filtering and used a similar technology, I had never heard of this until I purchased this particular unit haha.

SolNine ,

I never liked Twitter to begin with, once it became an unabashed environment for hate it was a piece of cake to close my account.

SolNine ,

And this is why I’m still on Monterey… Being in audio production, it’s rare that updating your OS (barring security updates) improves your stability.

SolNine ,

What is wrong with these people?

We need to start an organization that helps to rehome any woman in one of these states to a state with sane laws.

I feel truly sorry for the women who have been brainwashed since birth to agree with these laws that subjugate them, and continue to vote for the people passing them.

SolNine ,

It’s Nissans in general! I swear they must be one of the highest hp/dollar cars on the road or something for economy cars, and everyone drives them like they stole them!

SolNine ,

Multiple homes I’ve lived in have had these slots in the medicine cabinets lol.

Did they anticipate people not living long enough to care? Or that some biome would form to use the blades as food?

Interesting decisions all around.

SolNine ,

It’s not so much about filling it up, but when someone goes to eventually renovate the place lol. Open the drywall and just have a bunch of blades to clean up… Or if you get a leak and have to now deal with a puddle of rusty blades.

I want to say that possibly one of the medicine cabinets had a smaller container that collected them at some point, but again, it was still fixed behind the wall lol.

SolNine ,

Makes sense!

SolNine ,

I am very sorry you all are living like that, it would drive me mad.

SolNine ,

It can’t possibly have any relationship to morons like Florida’s Surgeon General citing bogus claims and vaccine efficacy denialism could it?

SolNine ,

However you classify them, they are deadly to many people.

SolNine ,

If only more people would move to Mastodon it could drop another 50% in value!

SolNine ,

Haha I’ve been trying too.

SolNine ,

Anything that helps demonitize Twitter is good in my opinion!

SolNine ,

I’ve been getting these for ages now… UPS, USPS, endless scam texts all the time!

SolNine ,

This 100%! I barely used Twitter to begin with, but as soon as he went off the deep end, I completely deleted my account.

SolNine ,

This shouldn’t really surprise anyone, the writers all finished striking for MORE MONEY. Services aren’t free, content isn’t free. Netflix hires a lot of writers and endless unionized people to make their shows and films. If we all want to be part of making society more equal it does infact come with higher costs for our selves, and I am perfectly fine with that.

SolNine ,

Love the down votes haha… I guess people don’t want to actually pay for creators to make content. I don’t think the average person has any idea how much content creation costs, nor how time consuming it is.

SolNine ,

Oh ONLY 68 MILLION dollars, not to mention the ever increasing cost of living for all the other unionized cast and crew. I suppose they can totally just absorb those costs, or people should not get cost of living increases right… The company has a little over a 10% profit margin, which doesn’t seem egregious to me.

SolNine ,

And we do realize that revenue is different from net profits correct?

SolNine ,

Contract subsidies are kind of coming back in the form of “trade in bill credits.”. Previously you’d sign a 2 year contract and they would subsidize your phone, however; I just got $800 of trade in credit at Verizon for a phone they normally give $150 for.

The catch, of course there are many… the bill credits are over 3 years, and in my case fully offset the cost of the monthly phone purchase price; if you leave you need to pay off the remaining balance, and if you upgrade you lose your credits. Also you need to be on an unlimited plus plan.

However; I now have a new phone with no additional monthly payments. The last Samsung I had made it 5 years, and the new one actually has a serviceable battery!

SolNine ,

I ended up getting the S23 Ultra, (had to come out of pocket a bit), and if you get Samsung’s Care+ insurance it’s $8 a month, so basically $100 a year if something goes catastrophically wrong. I will probably carry that insurance for the first two years or so of owning the phone. Given I rely upon my phone for a ton of business, my home phone, social communication etc, it seems fairly reasonable as they claim to have 24 hour replacement.

SolNine ,

I actually agree with him, and I am not an employee of the gaming industry. In the mid 90s N64 carts were freaking $79.99 at one point early on! I realize part of this is because the carts were expensive, but even CD based games were not THAT far behind at $49.99 or $59.99 as I recall. I realize they don’t have the same physical distribution costs, but game prices really have not kept up with inflation. Growing up it was a big freaking deal to get a new NES game you damn well better learn to love it, like it or not haha. Now… games are generally much more affordable for the average family, plus if you just wait a bit and don’t buy on release (barring Nintendo 1st party titles) they are way cheaper!

SolNine ,

It’s abysmal at this point… Whatever they did to it, the results are now awful and far more inaccurate than they were a few months back.

SolNine ,

Small houses in most Florida Metro areas are in the 400k range… Multiple 3/2s in the 1500sq range are 500k+

SolNine ,

I don’t know where you got that info from but that is certainly not the norm… There are Tesla cabs in Vegas with over a million miles, and most of these battery packs retain close to 90% of their capacity even after 10 years. I’m sure there are exceptions, but 3 years is silly.

Yes there are problems and hurdles to overcome but I’d rank that pretty low.

GPT has been utter garbage lately. I feel as though it’s somehow become worse. I use it as a search engine alternative and it has RARELY been correct lately. I will respond to it, telling it that it is incorrect, and it will keep generating even more inaccurate answers… It’s to the point where it almost becomes entirely useless, where sometimes it used to find some of the correct information.

I don’t know what they did in 4.0 or whatever it is, but it’s just plain bad.

SolNine ,

My experience mirrors this, though I don’t use it for much beyond a specific use case… I’m wondering why they neutered it so much?

SolNine ,

I wondered why I was getting more political spam in my inbox for a bit…

SolNine ,

This is one of the best tools I’ve used, works really well!

christitus.com/windows-tool/

SolNine ,

It’s awesome right?? Really impressed with the tool!

SolNine ,

Admitting she is wrong about a single fact would bring the entire house of cards tumbling down… Imagine having to admit you are wrong about everything you have come to represent. It would come with soul crushing pain to your ego, and these people can’t confront that.

SolNine ,

There were many factors that changed people’s opinions of him, and for me it has absolutely nothing to do with “the media.”

Remember when he randomly called a guy a pedophile on Twitter who saved the kids in the cave rescue, all because they didn’t use his submarine idea?

That was the turning point for me 5 years ago, and he’s gone downhill ever since. The reason he was the golden child of tech for many left leaning individuals is because he was pushing forward electric vehicles in a manner no one else had the will to.

He also happens to be a piece of shit as a human being… Nothing to do with “the media.”

SolNine ,

Since Sync came out, absolutely love it! Hope more people join!

SolNine ,

How much VC is really being invested at the moment? I know a variety of people at start ups and the money is very tight at the moment given the current interest rate environment.

SolNine ,

That is crazy!
