But… but it was the house that passed it… the house is currently run by republicans…

School_Lunch ,

I don’t know why, but I never made the connection of this pose to the term “reared-up” (meaning ready to go/launch) until recently.

School_Lunch ,

I mean it is an accurate description of it, so that might be a connection… but if you know the actual history of the term then please share

School_Lunch ,

I don’t get out much, so I have no clue how others are doing. I’ll admit that shit sucks right now, but I haven’t been living paycheck to paycheck since working part time in my early 20s over a decade ago. I live in a low COL area and make about $35-$40,000 a year. I only spend maybe $15,000 a year. I may never be able to buy a house, but I’m far off from paycheck to paycheck. It makes me wonder if people who are living that way are maybe just living outside of their means?

School_Lunch ,

I don’t remember where I saw it, but I watched a video about different exo-planets. One that stuck out to me was a planet that had miles of ice but possibly also a liquid water ocean underneath. If intelligent life evolved down there, they would probably have no clue about the wider universe and think their world is all that exists. Imagine such a being’s reaction if they ever drilled up through the ice. I feel like this could be turned into a good sci-fi book.

School_Lunch ,

It should probably be expected that any country with the means will interfere in other countries elections. What bothered me most in 2016 was not so much what Russia did, but that we didn’t seem to have much of a response to it. And yes can we please support democracy and not authoritarians. I feel like the whole cold war was about capitalism vs communism when it should have been about democracy vs authoritarianism.

School_Lunch ,

I don’t know much about investing, but i wonder if it would it be a good time to short those companies?

School_Lunch ,

I remember a documentary about a famous northwest passage expedition that was never seen again. One of the inuit people they talked to during an investigation claimed they found a boat, and in the captain’s quarters they found a body in the bed with a big smile on its face. That would be absolutely terrifying, but apparently that’s what naturally happens to corpses when their lips and gums receed.

School_Lunch ,

I wonder how much more energy it took to accomplish that compared to just shooting a rocket. Last I had heard railguns weren’t really feasible because of the absurd amount of energy they would require even with perfect efficiency.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I’m sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I’m sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I’m sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it’s been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one...

School_Lunch ,

For me, every time it suggests the correct base word, it gets the ending wrong, so I have to type out the whole word anyway. For example, if I want past tense it’ll suggest the present tense of the word.

School_Lunch ,

I agree, but my understanding of it is that developing and announcing a long term plan for a company like that would cause the stock price to dip in the short term. Apparently that would be something shareholders could sue over, so even if some CEO wanted to do the right thing, they couldn’t. It comes down to the greed of people who don’t know and don’t care about the companies they’re invested in and their impacts on the world. They just want that money to come in every month.

School_Lunch ,

Maybe I remember wrong, but wasn’t he coordinating releases of leaked dnc data with Roger Stone? I’m gonna assume anyone dealing with Roger Stone is not on the up and up…

School_Lunch ,

They found classified documents at this location. Why the hell would they leave without opening every door? This seems very basic to me…

In Egypt, Wang Yi calls for Gaza ceasefire, Palestinian statehood (www.scmp.com)

In a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri in Cairo, the top Chinese diplomat said “it is necessary to insist on the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign state of Palestine on the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital.”...

School_Lunch ,

I doubt he would have said anything unless it matched the party line, so its not completely uninformative. The problem I see is that I’m pretty sure that this peace solution has been proposed in the past, and it was the Palestinians who rejected it.

For me there’s a certain amount of stress relief when I feel good contact with the ball. It can also be fun to try to be accurate the same as with other games like darts.

Fusion is the first step to a post scarcity world. All the new technology, products, agriculture methods, ect. that would be made possible with abundant, clean energy would completely transform the world. I doubt solar and wind could ever provide enough to make those advances.

School_Lunch ,

That’s a much taller order than you make it sound. It’d probably be easier to figure out fusion.

Just think about the amount of fuel one plane uses, then go look at flightradar24.com

Moms for Liberty members call the cops on Florida librarians (popular.info)

Two members of Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group, have reported several Florida school librarians to law enforcement. They claimed they had evidence that librarians were distributing "pornography" to minors and requested that law enforcement officers be dispatched. This represents a serious escalation of the tactics...

If there was porn in libraries, then you would see a whole lot more teenage boys hanging out there.

Did racist use the "biological advantage" argument when Black athletes started competing alongside white athletes?

Given that racists and slavers used the “natural physical strength” of black people to justify putting them on hard labor and some medics still think that blacks has higher resistance to pain, I wonder if when black athletes started to join mixed race sport teams, some racist would have used the same “biological...

School_Lunch ,

I can’t remember a specific example, but that does sound familiar. I remember someone claiming a possible reason for their strength was that slavers would breed slaves like animals for certain traits.

School_Lunch ,

So all war is genocide by that definition.

School_Lunch ,

There is a combination of sounds that could perfectly describe advanced technology capable of ending world hunger and suffering. Verbal communication is like spells. All words have an effect on our mind and emotions, it’s just that most word’s effects are too small to notice. There could be some perfect combination of words that resonate with everyone and brings about world peace.

Banks in Hong Kong can print their own money. There are 8 different designs in circulation. (lemmy.world)

Before someone asks why there isn’t insane inflation from banks printing an infinite amount of money for themselves, the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar. In order to be allowed to print HKD, banks must have an equivalent amount of USD on deposit.

School_Lunch ,

Seems like that would make it easier to counterfeit. How do they keep up to date with which designes are valid?

Israel Attack: Hamas Militants Parade Naked Body Of Israeli Woman In Open Truck; Disturbing Video Surfaces (www.freepressjournal.in)

In a shocking incident, horrific visuals are surfacing on the internet in which it can be seen that the Hamas militants are taking a semi-naked dead body of an Israeli woman on an open truck and parading in the city. It is said that the militants after attacking Israel are killing and taking the civilians as hostage. The...

This video is basically them tattooing “backwards savage” on their forehead. There is no other conclusion. You could have the most justified cause there is, but doing this completely and utterly cancels that out.

If you make a perfectly exact replica of yourself do you suddenly perceive the universe from two perspectives?

School_Lunch ,

That sounds like a form of last Thursdayism. The entire universe could’ve been created last Thursday with everything made to seem older, including everyone’s memories. These philosophies are usually shot down by occam’s razor.

School_Lunch ,

Occam’s razor is choosing the simplest answer. There is no simple answer when it comes to teleportation. I’m not sure there is a full break in consciousness when we sleep. Consciousness may not even be the right word…

In this case I’m not defining consciousness as simply being awake, but instead defining it as the perspective from which each individual perceives the universe.

School_Lunch ,

If teachers don’t explains things, then what exactly are they for?

University could be a whole lot cheaper if they gave out diplomas for just reading the text books.

School_Lunch ,

And you sound like you’re making excuses for shitty teachers.

The best teachers I ever had were the ones who actually taught during class and rarely had to assign homework.

School_Lunch ,

I did my homework… just when it came to lazy teachers that expected you to teach yourself by assigning chapters to read from textbooks that aren’t known to be easy reads, the quality was usually lacking. It would be better if I could read the textbook with someone who knows the subject matter… ah yes I’ve got it, a TEACHER.

School_Lunch ,

Yeah… I’m not sure I understand that comment without an example. Are you saying your field is something that takes a lifetime to master and you have to spend every waking hour working on it?

And yes the classes that I learned the most in were the ones where we would read the textbook together and do exercises during class. The worst were the ones that would just assign the chapter for you to read at home without them there as a resource if you had any questions.

Everything depends on scarcity. Supply and demand. There has to be unsatisfied demand otherwise prices would be too low for anyone to make any money… it’s a poorly designed system.

School_Lunch ,

It’s intentional in capitalism. Any surplus will cause the price to plummet, so for it to function properly there has to be unsatisfied demand. The government even pays some farmers to not grow things on their land.

School_Lunch ,

It seems like the only central planning the US ever does is to prop up capitalism from some inherent flaw instead of just fixing the underlying foundation.

In this specific example, my question is why pay farmers to not grow crops instead of encouraging them to create a surplus and just paying them the difference in the price drop?

School_Lunch ,

Tolerable work environment is at the top of my list. If I were to even consider working at an intolerable business, I would need to be paid enough to retire after a year. We have made it so that work is life, and also now retirement is very uncertain for most young people. There’s no way I’m gonna take an intolerable job that will go on indefinitely.

Conservatives hope Supreme Court defangs US consumer watchdog (www.reuters.com)

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is currently pursuing nearly two dozen lawsuits accusing prominent defendants including Fifth Third Bank (FITB.O), TransUnion (TRU.N) and Moneygram of financial misconduct. But the watchdog’s future may be in peril thanks to a case now before the U.S. Supreme Court....

You have to ask? Who has Assange never released any information on even though they are known for corruption…

School_Lunch ,

Are you well known as a corrupt state?

School_Lunch ,

No one is trying to arrest him because he is selective about what he releases. They want to arrest him because he aided in illegally accessing classified info. That is the behavior of a spy, not a jornalist. The person he aided was already found guilty and did their time.

What are some physics-based arguments against hard determinism?

I don’t believe free will is real. I’m not a deep physics person (and relatively bad at math), but with my undergrad understanding of chemistry, classical mechanics, and electromagnetism, it seems most rational that we are creatures entirely controlled by our environments and what we ingest and inhale....

School_Lunch ,

I’m far from knowledgeable about this, but the only thing I’m aware of that might disrupt determinism is quantum mechanics. Something about particles at that level not having set values until they are observed, making them truly random. I have no clue how that could lead to free will. We still have no control over it. It’s more like they are the base that everything else is determined off of.
