If you’re splitting hairs about communism, socialism, and “mislabelling” (even though socialism is a generic term that encompasses communism…?), why are you describing China’s government as communist? Communism is (ideally, at least) stateless, and like all socialist idologies it is fundamentally anti-capitalist.

You’re right that the Nordic model isn’t socialist, though. It’s a blend of social democracy and corporatism.

This is a very leftist online space. And proudly so. And it’s not like there’s a lack of disagreement among leftists. But any vagueries about having “controversial” opinions is gonna come across as fascist dogwhistling or at best liberal snobbery.

Lol the fact that you think leftism is small and unified enough to be at risk of becoming an “echo chamber” shows just how little you know about leftism.

Put really succinctly, liberalism means capitalists who think that capitalism is a “free”, “democratic” and “equal” system. Some liberals think its flaws can be ironed out with regulation and reform.

Leftists aren’t just socially progressive. They’re also anti-capitalist. And no amount of “debating” is gonna change that.

Re Musk, it’s about intent. He’s been using “different opinions” under the pretence of “free speech” (and “democracy”) as an excuse to boost fascist content on Twitter. It’s cryptofash doublespeak.

But even fascism aside “you should be more open to debating differing opinions” still comes across as tone-deaf centrism.

As for defining fascism, with crap like “horseshoe theory” muddying the waters, as well as the general impression people have that fascism is some isolated evil from the past, there’s ample room for doubt in online interactions.

Yeah, very true. It’s quite the catch-22.

With decentralised systems and free software we can try to evade the control of these corporations, but the irl parallels to this (e.g. self-sustability) are even more difficult to pull off.

I’d like to know that too. The solution I’ve seen mentioned is to just create your own instance to host your own account which is… easier said than done, lol.

It would be cool if we could keep offline backups of our accounts and “sync” them to an instance of our choosing. Migrating would be as simple as syncing up the backup to another instance. And importantly, it would be way easier than setting up one’s own linux server, most people wouldn’t even know where to start.
