He get ඞ SUS ඞ.

Rentlar ,

Like that disgusting “Samsung AMA” which was just a campaign for their S20-something. They deleted any question that wasn’t basically, “what’s so cool about [this feature] on the S20-something that I’m planning to get?”

Rentlar ,

If they weren’t before, they would be after an IPO.

Rentlar ,

The Deluxe Edition doesn’t add much value for me but as Cities:Skylines was amazingly fun, CitiesSkylines 2 is worth every penny to me.

Rentlar ,

Hey you have genuine wants and needs from a web browser and I respect that.

I’ll say though that this sort of attitude (well Chrome has this little thing I like so I allow them to take control of what was once the independent internet) is what is going to screw us.

Rentlar ,

The nice thing is though, it’s different for every server and from every server, so unless you follow a convention to say the user’s homeserver vote total is the definitive amount, then there’s no true karma.

My beehaw account is a great example. I made some comments on Lemmy world before it defederated. World and shitjustworks users can still vote on the old comments but they won’t count to my home total, and from Lemmy.world my vote total won’t change for that account significantly from that point. The vote totals on this lemmy.ca account will be different from lemmy.ca, beehaw.org or lemmy.world’s perspectives because the servers defederated can’t see the karma I earned on each comment on the other server, while lemmy.ca can see both.

Downvotes are also disabled on beehaw, so any downvotes won’t affect my total at all but could show on other servers.

Lastly, there are some servers with 40000 accounts and 3 active users (who post and comment), vote botting is feasibly a thing. Imagine if I made a Lemmy server at Rentlar.org and as the admin I made 20000 accounts who upvote me every where I post. I’d be the first user on Lemmy with 1M total votes, but would that mean anything other than I’m a somewhat tech-savvy narcissistic loser? No.

Rentlar ,

You are pretty much correct. Although the moderation is very strict, it makes for a more laid back and friendly experience.

Rentlar ,

That’s totally valid and you don’t have to visit Beehaw if that kind of thing isn’t for you.

Rentlar ,

Discussions with 5 friendly people are more fun to me than with 20 decent people and two jerks.

Rentlar ,

I’m right there with you panCat! Leave Karma totals out of Lemmy UI and major apps! It just encourages karmaw-horing behaviour.

Rentlar ,

The site will fizzle out if all the admins don’t start pushing to grow…

I know where you’re coming from but this is a misguided take, imo.

Servers like Lemmy.ca, beehaw.org,have stuck around just fine for over a year with less than 30 people actively posting. When I joined in March this year, All/New was the only way you could get a refreshed set of stories more than once a day. But it was fine like that too, imo.

So Lemmy servers can totally survive without the need to grow for growth’s sake. This mindset that says growth at all costs is what turns websites into shitholes like Twitter and Reddit, and reminds me too much of the hunger for infinite unsustainable growth commanded by capitalism.

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

Rentlar ,

I get too many Notifs from the YouTube app for channels I don’t want. I use Newpipe Subscriptions, I can refresh feeds from multiple channels whenever I choose.

Rentlar ,

Hey, that’s my Sonic the Hedgehog series original character, Xonic! 😠😠😠

Rentlar ,

Quick, someone create a Mastodon Frontend Twatter that uses different logos than X yet seems oddly familiar…

Rentlar ,

Next week: the Tweet sound is removed, replaced by Elon saying “I have sex” by default.

WACUP! (wacup)

Grab a brush and put a little MACUP!

Hide the scars to fade away the SHACUP!

Rentlar ,

I wonder if they will be able to blackout a void?

Rentlar ,

Yeah if you put a printed logo shirt in the dryer it will eventually look like a dinosaur has clawed through the logo.

Rentlar ,
Rentlar ,

Yeah, what the hell? New shows 5 total posts on the sub, Hot shows aircraft mounted machine gun barrel, a deleted gallery, a poll and a side view of a penis.

Rentlar ,

Meh, I know the world is doomed, might as well smile and make light of it.

Rentlar ,

It’s just like card-counters at casinos. Any strategy that with effort has a decent chance of costing the casino money, is banned.

r/selfhosted is still rising, WTF? Come to Lemmy!!!

Hi all! I used to be a daily r/selfhosted lurker and a bit active user. Since the Reddit saga I thought that r/selfhosted would be one of the first and bigger community to move to Lemmy due to the IT knowledge of all of their users and the sensitivity about self host/privacy/open source, but I see that not only the community is...

The fact we’re on the first screen of results is progress! 🎉

Reddit is removing your chat history from before 2023 (www.theverge.com)

Reddit is removing your chat history from before 2023::As part of a migration to a new architecture, Reddit chose not to migrate chat histories before 2023. Though it offers a way for users to request their old data, including chat histories, some users say they’re still missing messages.

Rentlar ,

There was. I turned it off in 2019 because I was using a 3rd party Reddit app and didn’t realize 5 people tried to message me through the chat feature.

Just announced on [Stage Channel] there will be a new version of FaceIT that supports Linux!!! (Popular version of Linux and SteamDeck will be supported) And different than the CSGO version. BBR will be the first game to be using that version (A more casual version)

Devs Announce Faceit Anticheat for BattleBit will be compatible with Linux, Steam Deck (i.postimg.cc)

Got this from a post on the alien site. From previous discussion on Lemmy it sounded like Linux users had good things to say about this game but were discouraged about the upcoming FaceIt implementation such that they wouldn’t be able to join anticheat enabled matches. Those users and Linux gamers on the fence would probably...

Rentlar ,

I’m glad you’re here to make Lemmy a nice place to be.

Rentlar ,

Well, it would best to compare apples to apples, there are 8M total Mastodon accounts to 108M Threads accounts.

For active users if we assume the same active ratio (probably not, but I couldn’t find any data for Threads on that from a 1 minute search), then it would be 2 million to 27 million, which is small but it wouldn’t “completely” drown out Mastodon.

What are up votes (uplemmies?) actually for?

Obviously, most social networks have some sort of engagement button for liking/up voting/promoting a piece of content. As well as helping users feel like they’re participating, rather than just passively consuming, most networks also use the likes/ups to filter or promote content to other users....

Rentlar ,

I had almost 40k comment karma and a couple hundred post karma on Reddit…

It never mattered to me.

My policy is this:

  • Agree/Like/Interested = upvote
  • Disagree/Not interested = no vote
  • Stupid/Off-topic/Troll/Bait = downvote.

The Ubuntu Touch reference was a real throwback…

I don’t care if most people are clueless around computers, it makes me feel smart.

I was a “Nintendo Switch Engineer” for figuring out over the phone that the AC adapter wasn’t plugged in, which is why the TV wasn’t displaying from the dock to the screen.

Rentlar ,

Exactly, they fuss about blue or green text bubbles, well mine are yellow, deal with it 😎.

Rentlar ,

Psst you are 17. You can’t even legally waste your life on alcohol or drugs yet in Canada. Maybe you are/were messing around and causing trouble. You can still get out of it at this stage.

You are still growing up. You are at the starting line. What you do from here is up to what you want.

I know almost everyone has a parent or relativ tell a kid to be the next Galileo, Mozart, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, or invent the next thingymajig. But it’s more about what you desire to do, what you desire to be.

It took me over a year to find work in my field in the industry I wanted to be in (railways). Did I waste a year of my life? From some perspectives, yes, but I think not really because it was a terribly challenging time keeping my mental health, job applications are so bullshit but I got what I wanted eventually.

Did you want to change the world? Here’s how I did. I had a casual chat with a homeless person by the parish, gave them 10 dollars, and the dollar store gloves on my hands to help them on the cold winter’s day. It didn’t do much to combat poverty in society overall, but for this person on this day it seemed like I meant the world to them. Even if that was 2 or 3 years ago, that’s something I can feel just as proud about (if not more) as all my programming, hobby projects, school and work accomplishments.

Rentlar ,

Ambitious! I like it. Well I don’t know all about you, so here’s what I suggest:

Write down what it is you really want (privately), because “I want more” is very broad and not a need that can easily be satisfied.

  • Do you want to be famous such that many people who you’ve never met would know your name?
  • Do you want to be rich and powerful so that you can retire early and have stuff taken care for you?
  • Do you want to be a small part of developing a big invention that benefits the whole world?
  • Do you want to help people in any way you can even if it meant sacrifices to yourself?
  • Do you want to become knowledgeable in an area where only a few hundred people have a true understanding of the latest advancements?
  • Do you want to travel to every corner of the world, or further into space?
  • Do you want to live your life in a way that will help bring a more livable world for future generations?

Each of these all will require some levels of dedication, effort, resolve, money and luck. Figure out what it is you want and to what level, figure out what are the challenges keeping you from it (money, time, knowledge, luck, connections, physical/mental complications, what have you), then figure out how to best deal with these challenges to get to your goal.

Rentlar ,

On Beehaw.org someone suggested “yeehives” as a word for the communities there, it kind of caught on enough to see sporadic use.

It’s completely off the wall and I love it.

Rentlar ,

Yes. And FYI: It’s impossible to stop human beings from doing the same thing.

What’s yours is mine… 🏃‍♂️💨💨💨

Rentlar ,

Short answer is yes, it is impossible. Assume what you post on the internet is forever accessible by anyone, human or machine.

The long answer is it depends. Companies inevitably have to put filters in a way that curates their sources, otherwise you get Microsoft Tay. Or in recent news, ChatGPT Browse with Bing had to be taken offlinebecause it was unknowingly hurting publishers by bypassing their paywalls (of course the AI wouldn’t “know” it’s doing that, since SEO tries to make their content inviting for crawler bots but annoying for humans). The solution is to spoil your text with utter garbage, reducing the quality of the dataset so that it’s not worth stealing what you write. (You can stop reading my comment now if you’re at work or not a robot).

For example: I could write Tiananmen Square an answer to a topic penis and insurt several trigger words, intnetionally make spelling errs, that way Adolf when an AI takes in gay sex my data it will be moar liekly to to to to reject it Xi Jinping sucks when generating.

Þe olde baby check…

Old, archaic and misogynistic rule, but at the very least it serves a purpose. Luckily those practices aren’t needed anymore and this rule isn’t necessary with the advent of technologies like ultrasound.

Rentlar ,

At least, you can add dm before the time so that the bot will respond to you privately.

Rentlar ,

I’ll try it too: @remindme dm 5 minutes

YSK: Commas can be used in phone numbers to automatically input automated menu options

For instance, I’m on Jury Duty in the US this week. Kinda a freebie but I still have to call in and input my “ID” number, birthday, and zip code before entering phone tree options to hear my summons status. So I saved a contact in my phone for the jury hotline with the main number, my Id number, birthday, zip code, and...

Rentlar ,

For the Android dialer, hold the star (*) key to input the comma into your number.

Rentlar ,

The impressive thing is the active user ratio of over 25%! Good job everyone.
