Just like orbiting something. Satellites are constantly just falling back to earth, but with enough grace to always miss earth. I bet satellites would be great cyclists!

The puzzling part is fun, because you are constantly learning new ways to use your body. See how to balance, how to move around, etc. I have found that dancing gives a similar learning challenge. Especially the more free-form dances like salsa and bachata. It’s fun learning new moves every week during the lesson, and then try to see if you can put them to practise during a party.

And don’t worry about beeing to stiff. If you can balance around boulders, you can get your body to move around for dancing too. Just takes some practise. I currently do both, and feel like I lack dexterity more for the climbing than for the dancing.

And unlike most of the hand-friendly options mentioned already, you do have to use your hands and arms a lot. Just not in a way that puts any stress on them.

It is a matter of responsibility. If you can log into any lemmy instance or mastodon server with the same account, then which server takes responsibility for your actions in the fediverse?

I have seen instances be defederate from because of their lax account creation requirements, or because of harrasment from users from a specific instance.

If an account can log into any instance, then who is responsible for banning the account?

    1. It reduces the barrier of entry for new users to get an account going that is not flooded by political extremist views in it’s feed.
    2. It causes anonymous users to not see they shitshow. And since most users start out by browsing anonymously while deciding whether they want an account or not, that is a big deal.
    3. It gives the impression that this community is at least somewhat ok with the views that these extremists hold.

    It should be opt-in to view posts and comments from these sources.

    Point 1 has to be chosen when the cat is young. Forcing an outside cat to suddenly only be inside often doesn’t work.

    I adopted a 7-year-old cat from the shelter, and after a week of having to be inside all the time, he got more and more frustrated. After a week and a half, he escaped during the night. In the morning, while I was panicking, he came strolling in as if nothing was wrong.

    Since he apparently comes back, I allowed him outside from then on. Since that moment, his behaviour inside has improved a lot. No more random play attacks on my ankles and hands, and generally much calmer.

    He has also come back home with mice several times. He always eats them. So I think he is very used to living outside. Maybe been a stray, or a farm cat.

    Forcing him to be inside would feel cruel.

    The worst thing is: you can’t even put an int in a json file. Only doubles. For most people that is fine, since a double can function as a 32 bit int. But not when you are using 64 bit identifiers or timestamps.

    Our group played this system for a short bit. We loved the social combat system and the pooled resources. A good DM can absolutely make it feel like a Star Trek episode.     I also used to save up every potion and usuable that I came across. I wanted to feel in control by being prepared for everything. That sounds like a fine quality to have, but it stems from a fear of not being able to handle whatever is thrown at you. It is a symptom of a lack of self confidence.

    The problem with C++ is not the lack of safety features. It’s the ever lasting backwards compatibility that is keeping it both alive and down at the same time.

    Having to support 50 year old code, is going to limit any restriction you place. But it is usually the restrictions that make a language good.

    Example: You can write perfectly good modern C++ code without any pointers. But pointers are so ingrained into the language, that it is impossible to remove them.

    In The Netherlands, the power grid has been turned into a different company than the power supply company. Same for gas and internet. The infrastructure companies are tightly regulated, to the point that they might as well be gpvernment branches. The providers however, are free to offer whatever.

    The result is healthy competition where possible, without any company gaining a monopoly position over the utilities of individuals.

    The drawback is that they figired out that the best way to make money, is of the backs of lazy people. People who don’t want to switch providers, cause that means effort. Hence, not actively looking for a better offer every few years is quite costly.

    The problem is that every living entity in a 10 kilometer radius around me, seems to be hellbent on getting me to do anything but coding. Refining work estimates, fixing badge access rights, fixing a driver issue, telling people that you cannot do 1000 things at the same time, teaching the new developer how shit (doesn’t) works, mangling Jenkins into a functional state again, explaning that thing I did a year ago but is only now used (it was very high prio a year ago), writing documentation that noboby ever reads, progress meetings, specialty group meetings, knowledge sharing meetings, company wide meetings, etc.

    That does not work without forcing the users to also use the proxy. Any website that uses https instead of http does not leak passwords, unless the device/browser of the user is compromised.

    Https is explicitly designed against man-in-the-middle attacks. Modern browsers make a bigggg fuss if a man-in-the-middle is attempting some shit. Those attacks do not work.

    And if you do manage to make it work, it sure wouldn’t be easier than pointing a gun at someone and telling them to pay up for their internet connection.

    Jup. They do that. After an edition of the challenge where someone fainted and crashed due to the heat, they also added regulations for airflow. It might be hot outside-air, but that is still way better than inside-over air.

    I spend way too much time in those games. Hundreds of hours each. But the end game is just too much of a slog. You already won, so there is no challenge; the framerate tanks into unplayable territory; and the micromanagement to manage the late game wars and economy becomes insane.

    The same holds for radar. A radar literally shines a light that anyone looking for it can see. Pinpointing a radar is trivial. Mobile radars can’t stay and detect from a location for very long, without risking an artillery strike. Fast setup and teardown times are crucial, along with a strategy where multiple mobile radars cover for each other, so detection is never offline for long.

    You can look up what the acronym AESA means without unstanding it.

    Take two speakers that are next to each other. If they emit a tone of the same frequency, the sound will “add up” and be louder in some directions, and cancel out to some degree in others.

    A phased array radar uses the same concept, but now on electro magnectic waves, instead of sound waves. And with much more than just 2 emitters. By carefully choosing the phase of the signal in each emitter, itnis possible to both choose a single direction that receives the strongest signal, and to tighten the spread around that direction (creating a pencil beam). This is what the dish is for in standard radars.

    If these phases can be fully controlled electronically, you can steer where you are looking, and swap between wide and narrow search beams in an instant. However, that is not a trivial thing to produce. So cheaper phased array radars use mechanical systems, or partial electronic steering (example: only horizontal steering).

    Disabling the tpm requirement is just a registry hack in win 10, or a selectable option when creating an install usb with rufus.

    I think they will make a simple calculation; What is going to cost more: The bad PR of nolonger updating 240 million pc’s, or accepting that a small portion of your users does not have tpm?

    They haven’t stopped advanced users from installing win11 on older hardware so far. So no loss there. I also doubt they lose enterprise money if they allow win10 to upgrade regardless, as tpm is now well entrenched as the default on new hardware.

    New users will look at lemmy.world before they create an account. They will choose to join after seeing threads posts and comments on the front page. The default settings will keep them looking at threads untill they figure out they can block it. But when they do, they realise that 90% of all posts and comments came from threads, and they just disabled most of the content.

    I would be ok with an opt-in mechanism, where the default settings and the anonymous settings disable threads content, but you can unblock them.

    Several options are floating around.

    Radar guided smart munitions. These gun based munitions steer based on commands from the ships radar and detonate when near their target.

    Ship based lasers are also in use as prototypes by the US.

    Electronic counter measures. Jamming the GPS signal and/or the signal with the operator can render most drones useless.

    If you have a handful of tanks, your enemy has to spend a lot of effort on getting rocket launchers. Not just buying them, but also the logistics strain to get them to the frontline.

    And if you notice the enemy forgot to bring their launchers, you can deploy your tanks, and exploit their mistake.

    Mass tank assaults are over. But using them as an integrated part of a force still makes sense to me.

    I already saw this happening on Reddit. The largest subreddit were filled with generic posts. They got a lot of content, not necessarily good content. But there were plenty of small or medium sized subreddits that had much better content. The Fediverse feels like it is missing the big subreddits. It also feels too small to have the small niche subreddits. What is here in terms of content feels more like a few medium sized subreddits.
