Damn that really is surprising. I’m glad that she’s alive. Hope that she can return home safe.

Redex68 ,

Fyi - the EU isn’t stopping aid for Palestine, it was a comment made by an official that cannot unilaterally decide on this and other EU states are against it.

Redex68 ,

Do you mean at the end? I can’t live without it, I feel kinda claustrophobic if I can’t scroll below the actual text.

Redex68 ,

Man idk if that’s actually better. Most airlines are barely profitable as is, this just means the cost will get spread out to all customers instead of only the ones paying premiums. It does feel shitty to be nickel and dimed for every little thing, but I’m not sure if this is better.

Redex68 ,

I don’t get the point of it tho? You can already make missiles that go much faster and reach the entire globe. What usecase does this have? I highly doubt it’s gonna be cheaper than a regular rocket engine.

Redex68 ,

Ok so it’s basically certain then that the leaked codenames for new Valve hardware are gonna be VR related (guessing a new headset). They even confirmed that a new SteamDeck isn’t going to be released any time soon.

Redex68 ,

Why is that, off the top of my head I don’t remember seeing base e logarithms too often, why are they so important?

Redex68 ,

Where did this happen (i.e. which country)?

Redex68 ,

It’s not hard for me to cry because of a TV show, but for personal reasons I probably haven’t cried in 4 years at least, probably more but idk.

Redex68 ,

Technically they have, because the implication of the original post is that because Musk burned money sending his car to space, he had to fire 10% of Tesla workers.

Redex68 ,

That is not a sustainable solution. What’ll happen when countries with currently high birth rates develop, reduce their birthrates and you don’t have as much immigration as before?

Redex68 ,

It would probably cost tens or hundreds of millions to produce an entire car to those tolerances.

Like that tolerance is literally insane.

Redex68 ,

Of all the things to bash on Apple for, this is probably the stupidest.

One of the few things Apple objectively does better is software support for older phones. They give way longer support than 90% of Android phones.

Redex68 ,

You sure, because I’m pretty sure like 90% of AC in Europe is probably heat pumps because it doesn’t make sense for them not to be. It doesn’t change the cost at all, it functions the same like if you just used cooling.

I know at least that every AC I checked here in Croatia was a heat pump.

Redex68 ,

Yeah, just wrappers. Steam wasn’t untill fairly recently, but they were slowly switching to it for some time.

Redex68 ,

I don’t think it’s too weird. So many apps today are just Chromium wrappers. It’s just easier to use a premade base, plus you don’t have to develop the web and desktop version independently, they can literally be the same code.

Redex68 ,

I feel like it’s necessary for some countries, e.g. Finland. Nobody in their right mind would ever want to invade finland given how strong their military is. You just can’t achieve that without conscription.

Redex68 ,

I never thought of it this way, that’s a pretty good interpretation.

Redex68 ,

My last two brain cells dying after seeing half of the comments saying that deflation is actually good.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

Redex68 ,

This person is either cursed or idk what they were trying to do. Installing Windows literally couldn’t be easier, you don’t even need to think about partitions, you can just let it create them itself.

I reinstall Windows every cca. 6 months to clear all the bloat i pick up, it’s really not that hard.

Redex68 ,

Yeah, I don’t agree with the post, I think for an OS like Windows, which is used by a lot of non-techy people, things like OP’s post should be the norm, you shouldn’t be able to brick your sistem easily.

But I feel your pain for windows apps, they’re such fucking cancer. I had the same problem when I tried to uninstall Sea of Thieves because the installer / Microsoft Store app was broken.

Redex68 ,

I don’t think it’s that. I think they just want to force manufacturers and users to have TPMs. They don’t want some users having one and some not, it’s easier when you know every device has one.

Redex68 ,

Yeah but that wouldn’t solve this issue? The malware stole data from the app on the users device, not from a server.

Redex68 ,

Apparently, aliens are very interested in anglophone countries

Redex68 ,

iPhones are the only the biggest by market share in very rich countries like the nordics, US, UK and a few others, with a bias towards anglophone countries I’d say. deviceatlas.com/blog/android-v-ios-market-share

Redex68 ,

They’re not depending on it I’m pretty sure? This is just something Google offers but that this time didn’t work.

I would expect the government to have, or at least plan to implement an independent system like in the US or many other countries where the government can push you warnings. It’s getting implemented in Croatia right now, but doesn’t seem to work yet.

Redex68 ,

That guy is making me question my sexuality

Redex68 ,

Damn this is incredibly convenient, I was just playing around trying to setup a home server the past few days and this was exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Redex68 ,

Well a significant difference is that this increases humidity, while normal AC decreases it.

Redex68 ,

What the other guy said. It’s down to the fact that you aren’t actually heating/cooling down a room, you’re just moving the heat already there around. E.g. in winter, instead of producing your own heat with electricity, which is 100% efficient, you take heat from the outside and put it inside, using a lot less energy in the process than if you were to create the heat inside of your home.

Though I’m not sure if it’s that efficient, I think I heard it’s more around the 150-200% mark, but I’m not sure.

People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?

Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...

Redex68 ,

Your last point is just how Bluetooth works. It’s not to do with the headsets being cheap. When two way audio is used over Bluetooth, quality drops dramatically because it becomes more compressed.

I think they’re fixing that with Bluetooth LE audio but I’m not sure.

Redex68 ,

I love how his second response can also be true even if he is a robot.

Redex68 ,

At this point idk if it’s exceeding their expectations, they just literally don’t have enough money to invest into more production yet.

Hopefully that problem will become more and more alleviated as they sell more and more devices.

Redex68 ,

2027 is actually pretty early for such a dramatic change, and somewhere I heard that it’s all phones sold, if that’s the case (i.e. you can’t sell old models if they don’t have easily replaceable batteries) than that is a really early date for such a law.

Redex68 ,

They finally updated the calendar so it doesn’t look like it’s out of windows 95? Thank god. I really wanna use it now but I’m too tied down to Outlook now. I guess I’ll try to migrate.

If it had a mobile app it would make it much easier. The Outlook mobile app is really good.

Redex68 ,

It’s not only bloat. From what I remember I think it’s also swap space, probably also some space for caching and some other things. E.g. I have 42GB of system space out of 256 on my Galaxy S21, and it’s definitely not all bloat apps.

Redex68 ,

The main problem is that if they really started fighting, Wagner is wholly reliant on the Russian army to support them with ammunition. Wagner has no logistics and would quickly crumble from it.

What hardware are you using for your self-hosted lemmy instance?

For those self-hosting a lemmy instance, what hardware are you using? I am currently using a small Hetzner VPS. It has 2 vCPU, 2GB RAM and 40GB SSD storage. My instance is currently just in testing with me as the only user, but I plan to use it for close friends or family that may want to try this out, but might not want to sign...

From what I’ve heard (take this with a huge grain of salt) is that the posts themselves shouldn’t take up much of your storage. The biggest thing that could take up your storage are images, but they are only stored on the instances where the community in which they were posted in is.
