I don’t know what happens to hot dog meat if it’s soaked/injected with ethanol to get it to 12% alc/vol (can you even legally have a solid food that specifies a liquid volume %?) but I can’t expect it is anything good.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Oh god. If I hear myself through people’s speakers when on a call I cannot continue. It’s super effective at making me confused and distracted. That’s awful.

The VCR was invented, marketed, and sold to do this very thing. When the VCR first came out (same for betamax) they didn’t sell pre-recorded tapes because the only way they had to make those was to manually record them individually in real-time which was prohibitively expensive. That’s also why movie rental places caught on: early VHS movies were too expensive for most to afford. But not too expensive for a business to rent hundreds of times.

Suffice to say: if recording TV was piracy, it wasn’t illegal and the people bitching had no way to enforce their will.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

This may just be a semantic argument. Media production can consider it piracy, but that’s irrelevant as it had no legal standing. Without a law prohibiting something, it’s legal. And the fact that they sued and lost means it was never illegal and the media companies can declare it “piracy” or “treason against Columbia Pictures” or whatever they want until they’re blue in the face but no one cares.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Which is weird because neither of those things are illegal. You can absolutely tape the radio. You just can’t distribute it. Just like you can copy your own media for your own use as much as you want.

The mission was so under wraps that Ely said he had to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

So that was probably just the SF 312. The NDA anyone who gets a US military clearance signs saying they won’t reveal classified info. There are other NDAs US military sign sometimes but they usually have to deal with proprietary commercial info. This line seems weird because signing an NDA as a military member is pretty much required for most duties.

From the article is sounds like toxic chemicals and radiation. And since it was in the 80s the chemicals probably aren’t still classified.

Other government employees who were stationed in the same area, mainly from the Department of Energy, have been aided by $25.7 billion in federal assistance, according to publicly available statistics from the Department of Labor. But those benefits don’t apply to Air Force veterans like Ely and Crete.

Definitely if the DoE (responsible for the US’s nuclear arsenal and power plants) is providing treatment. So this sounds like the VA is just not wanting to treat people which is fucking dumb. They don’t need to acknowledge the location of the cause of the injury, just identify and treat the injuries and illnesses.

Golf carts suck. They are rarely fast enough to not be a hazard on non-residential roads and they dont’ have any of the required safety features cars must have. They don’t require helmets like motorcycles do, either. It’s just a loop hole, or unenforced law to cater to rich(er) people who would complain to high heavens if they couldn’t drive their little carts around suburbia.

So there’s a place in the Forgotten Realms," Smith explained, “or the D&D universe, I should say, called the Far Realms. And some of the lore says that’s where the mind flayers began—it’s the cosmic horror place, you know. So I had this whole idea that you’d have this seer, who’s sitting at the bottom of Candlekeep, who is basically staring into the Far Realms, you know, and has gone completely insane, and you have to go down there and find out what he’s seen. I still think it would have been very cool.”

That would have been very cool, indeed.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Nah, the army would win. We have a bunch of individuals with firearms that practice using them on the range or maybe hunting. That’s a far cry from opposing an actual military. Sure the tech outpaces the army’s but most people are just going to hide in their houses. The rest will be seen coming and when martial law is enacted and they go house to house seizing guns, it’ll be over. It’s not like they can’t learn how to use modern weaponry. Most people vastly underestimate discipline and organization.

This assumes there is no modern military for this premise.

Neato ,

I wish we could get away from lawns entirely. I understand a back garden a bit, but why do we need 20’ of space between the house and sidewalk/road? We could fit a lot more houses in there if we didn’t have a useless bunch of space. Like we could have manicured parks in a lot of spaces and then a bunch of fields or forested areas where it wasn’t convenient to build homes for unusable green space.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Yeah, but most people aren’t trying to grow a food forest. It’s unlikely you’re shopping for a city or suburbia house, either. You probably want more land a bit farther out.

Also are you trying to grow fruit trees and food plants in your front yard? That’s mostly what I have a problem with. Back yards/gardens make more sense for stuff like growing food, decks, pools, etc.

Different housing issue. Separate from high costs or homelessness. Just about how neighborhoods and cities are designed.

The 'Appeal to Heaven' flag evolves from Revolutionary War symbol to banner of the far right (apnews.com)

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is embroiled in a second flag controversy in as many weeks, this time over a banner that in recent years has come to symbolize sympathies with the Christian nationalist movement and the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen....

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Anything the fascists touch is tainted. People forgot about this flag for decades and now it’ll be associated with treason and hate for decades longer. Anyone trying to pretend it’s anything but support for insurrection is lying to you because they are too cowardly to admit they are traitors.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Right. It happens to symbols that aren’t widely used. Fascists couldn’t co-opt the Disney logo or something. Even if copyright or trademark wasn’t a thing, no one would cede it.

The most common thing I can think of is the OK symbol, which people mostly didn’t let them take for very long.

If you aren’t moving to the bathroom, getting luggage, or doing something else that requires you to move and leave your seat: wear your seatbelt. This is why they say to keep it buckled. Unexpected turbulence of this magnitude is rare but can still happen and injure or kill people. It’s also why you have to put non-handheld items away on landing: turbulence or a strong bump can send laptops and such flying into people.

This is just how it’s always worked. It was just easier to convince people to believe in miracles when we didn’t have explanations for everything and video cameras. The church is reaching for coincidences and calling them miracles because that’s the best they can do. I’m just surprised they are still trying to make saints and not just settling for Saint Classic.

Greater Idaho movement: 13 counties in eastern Oregon have voted to secede and join Idaho (ktvz.com)

On Tuesday, voters in Crook County passed measure 7-86, which asked voters if they support negotiations to move the Oregon/Idaho border to include Crook County in Idaho. The measure is passing with 53% of the vote, and makes Crook County the 13th county in eastern Oregon to pass a Greater Idaho measure.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Will this change the number of electoral votes and house representative each state has? Because if not, this seems to benefit Oregon: concentrates Republicans in Idaho while lessening the impact of their vote.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

It’s so fucking weird anyone would want to move to Idaho.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

A state isn’t being formed: they’re just moving the lines. So I don’t think that comes into play.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Ah yeah. It was the total votes and minimums for Wyoming in Congress I was thinking of. That needs to be readjusted.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Well we’ve been trying that for 100 years and it turns out it doesn’t work because people are easily distracted and are generally terrible at driving.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

Co-sign? People do not understand what voting is and use these dramatic phrases. It’s damage mitigation and it always has been. That’s party politics: you almost never get your first choice. Compromise is the only way. Sometimes the compromise sucks but if the alternative is far worse, you do the grown up thing and prevent the most damage.

Exclusive: Tesla doing damage-control, discounts for European fleet buyers (www.reuters.com)

LONDON, May 20 (Reuters) - Tesla is working to appease some European leasing companies after the automaker’s repeated retail price cuts tanked their fleets’ value and its slow service and expensive repairs alienated their corporate customers....

This is probably sarcastic, but in case it’s not: Applesauce is a vegan substitute for eggs, not oil. There is no substitute for oil as many oils are already vegan. You can definitely substitute animal-based fats like butter and lard for others like coconut oil to make a recipe vegan.

Neato ,
@Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

I meant the other way. Substitute out lard and substitute in coconut oil.

It’s no surprise everywhere I’ve worked has outright banned its use for official work.

Especially when there isn’t clear harm being done to another person.

We have lots of laws to protect people from themselves and from the lies of corporations and such. Seatbelt and helmet laws are the most obvious. We can’t, as a society, expect people to be an expert on every subject. So people make laws to enforce certain actions to protect people from ignorance and misinformation. Hopefully these laws get passed after a lot of scientific evidence shows they are necessary and not political bigotry like cannabis bans and such.
