The way you phrased this could go either way: were you never taking on more work, no matter how obviously it needed to get done, just because you weren’t explicitly told to do that job? Because that would be a fair criticism in my estimation.

Live_your_lives ,

I guess it depends on the employer. I don’t do office work myself, but according to what I’ve heard from my wife about her jobs in banking adjacent fields, she has a few different queues of things to do that everyone takes from.

That’s not what they are saying at all. They’re saying small vehicles aren’t even safe in crashes with other small vehicles, let alone with bigger vehicles.

“Fireballs and bolides are astronomical terms for exceptionally bright meteors that are spectacular enough to to be seen over a very wide area. … A fireball is an unusually bright meteor that reaches a visual magnitude of -3 or brighter when seen at the observer’s zenith. … Fireballs that explode in the atmosphere are technically referred to as bolides although the terms fireballs and bolides are often used interchangeably.”

I liked the method some subreddits have where there’s always a pinned comment that community members can upvote/downvote for how relevant it is.

As someone who is much more centrist/liberal, I had to block a whole bunch of leftist communities recently just so that I could keep enjoying the Fediverse. I would have greatly prefered not to, but so much of leftist content on here is far too cynical to any other position.

Is there any possible benefit to having such “labs” in neighboring countries? Like, could they be directly intercepting data coming out of Russia or something?

Considering there were probably a large group of people who showed up just to see Trump, and that it is more awkward to boo than it is to clap, I think that was actually a pretty decent showing.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

Obviously, it would still be stacked against the employee, but the biggest thing would be that the person under investigation could sue the law firm and hurt the law firm and their client through social media or by encouraging unionization if there was any proof of misconduct during the investigation.

Why do you find that particular theory about the Cambrian Explosion compelling? I assume mankind is putting a similar pressure on many ecosystems today, so shouldn’t we be seeing that kind of evolutionary explosion happening now?

Live_your_lives ,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that was only one user who made that comparison, and they got downvoted hard for that.

"we’re starting work to look into the possibility of adding ActivityPub support to Ghost" says Ghost CEO (forum.ghost.org)

“This idea has been at the top of the list for a long time, so this week we’re starting work to look into the possibility of adding ActivityPub support to Ghost. Because there are lots of different potential ways this could be built, the team is curious to hear more detail about how you imagine this working… If you have a...

I took it to be contrasting the “thrill of discovery” with doing math that would be boring and tedious to most people.

What does it mean to “smoke weed” in this context?

According to the Lexham Bible Dictionary, this interpretation “dates back to the fifth century and suggests that kamelos, the Greek word for camel, should actually be read as kamilos, which denotes a rope or a ship’s anchor cable. … However, most scholars reject this interpretation because the meager textual evidence most likely can be attributed to speculations about this verse by some church fathers (Origen, Cyril of Alexandria; see Fitzmyer, Luke, 1204; Barclay, Matthew, 239).”

They also disagree with the gate interpretation, saying that “Scholars have found no historical foundation for this view, and no evidence supports the existence of such a small gate in Jerusalem’s walls.”

Context is important. Literally the next couple verses in both passages say something along the lines of "The disciples asked, ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus said, ‘With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.’ "

Why?

Can somebody explain this one?

Oh, that makes a lot more sense now. I didn’t see the “trans” and “CIS” on the side.

Learning how they lost is useful information in of itself. And even losers could probably tell you things like how quickly the other side could respond, what kind of equipment they used, basic lessons learned, etc.

In my experience, people like this actually know history pretty well, it just happens to be a very selective and misrepresentative version of it. It’s like trying to fight with a flat earther: you really have to know your stuff before you can take them on.

Actually, it isn’t so much a matter of being rich vs being poor as it is the level of inequality that influences generosity. People who have more are about as likely as those who have less to be generous when inequality is low, and according to some studies they are actually even more likely to do so. But when inequality is high then the generosity of the wealthy decreases.

How does your brain being biggest at 13 prove adulthood? I think it would better prove the opposite: brains are biggest at that age because they need the space to restructure things.
