There’s a reason scam artists target the elderly. If a box on the computer screen says “put payment info here” then who are they to argue with the box?

JonEFive ,

Good teacher. Authors choose their words intentionally. I’m guessing “fudging”, “friggen”, and “ducking” (thanks iPhone) are not great replacements for the subject matter.

JonEFive ,

Imagine having that much of an issue with barely offensive words that their kids will never read because most don’t use the school library anyway.

And imagine letting your kids come home and access whatever media they want including actual pornography on the internet. Most of these parents have zero clue how to block internet sites on their home computers and laptops let alone the phones that their kids all have.

But of course, that’s another problem some parents are asking the government to solve by forcing porn sites to require visitors to affirmatively identify themselves and their age. Of course, that only applies to the major porn sites that play by the arbitrary rules anyway. All so stupid.

JonEFive ,

That’s a good question. But keep in mind that they’re are significant taxes associated with selling a home in most places that would dissuade landlords from trying to game the system that way. Then again, they’re just one more loophole from making that plan work.

JonEFive ,

Yup. The way I like to phrase it is “there’s no problem that cops can’t make worse.”

JonEFive ,

“Don’t be evil” was a canary clause. There’s a reason it doesn’t appear in any of their documents anymore.

JonEFive ,

Note to everyone here: 988 is a new emergency number for mental health crises. 988lifeline.org

JonEFive ,

I think the point is that we have appropriately trained crisis response professionals, and those people should not be law enforcement. Cops have their role, and it is enforcing the law. They are not not should they be tasked with becoming mental health professionals.

I don’t want cops showing up when I really need an ambulance.

JonEFive ,

There sort of is now but most people don’t know about it yet. Instead of 911, dial 988. I don’t think 988 sends people to you, but they are trained mental health specialists who can talk instead of shout and threaten violence.

TBF, I’d rather a soldier show up at my door than a cop. At least soldiers are usually better trained in discipline, situational awareness, and appropriately evaluating threats. They are also trained on rules of engagement and usually aren’t terrified about every single engagement they find themselves in.

Maybe our police would be better if they received the same level of training as soldiers. And maybe that’s it. Soldiers are more confident in their abilities because they’ve received adequate training.

JonEFive ,

That really depends on how you look at it. They did murder an innocent person exactly because they made the wrong decision to engage in the first place. You can’t put yourself in harms way when it isn’t necessary then blame the danger you knew about in advance.

My opinion would be different if there was someone else in the apartment for them to defend, but there wasn’t.

The cops made a bad call and now someone is dead.

JonEFive ,

Counter-counterproposal: Let’s drop Lindsey on Gaza

JonEFive ,

There’s also the fact that there were no warnings. I’ve read some potentially conflicting accounts, but the consensus seems to be that there were no warning pamphlets dropped on Hiroshima ahead of the nuclear blast. At best, there may have been leaflets dropped that included Hiroshima amongst a list of 35 Japanese cities that could be the target of a bombing. At that time, the level of destructive capabilities were unheard of, so even seeing those leaflets, the thoughts citizens may have had is that there would be some firebombing. Destruction and death could be expected, but nothing like the complete obliteration that actually happened.

The use of atomic weapons was a demonstration of US destructive capabilities. They were a warning built of indiscriminate evil that saught only to strike fear into the eyes of anyone who would dare attack the US.

The use of atomic weapons may have legitimately reduced the number of American casualties, but I’m with you. It’s impossible to know whether lives were saved beyond those of American soldiers. Many civilians perished on those days, and that is not something to be celebrated.

JonEFive ,

I can’t imagine they would. I’m merely suggesting that he be placed in an exit row seat on a recalled Boeing 737, fly it through their air space, at let nature take its course.

JonEFive ,

Hey now, this court case is about the presidential ability to assassinate rivals, not the presidential ability to use the armed forces against American citizens on American soil. We would need the national guard for that.

X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some https://twitter.com/t3dotgg/status/1777425000133468582 began https://twitter.com/___frye/status/1777432913497465082 that posts https://twitter.com/__justplaying/status/1777433986500853845 via X for iOS were...

JonEFive ,

Well, let’s talk about when Twitter was founded…

JonEFive ,

I’m still convinced that he’s actively and intentionally trying to destroy Twitter.

Musk Admits He Doesn't Fact-Check Himself and Has Two Burner Accounts on Twitter (www.rollingstone.com)

Elon Musk‘s erratic posting on X, formerly Twitter, has come back to haunt him once again as a 22-year-old Jewish man pursues a defamation case over tweets in which the tech mogul baselessly suggested the recent college graduate was an undercover federal agent posing as a neo-Nazi during a street fight between far-right...

JonEFive ,

He’s one of those CEOs that teams have two meetings for: one where the CEO joins and they only say things the CEO wants to hear, and a second to actually discuss the relevant issues.

JonEFive ,

He did… But he does not have the authority.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

JonEFive ,

Give me freedom from advertising or give me death.

JonEFive ,

They have become the evil they were once apart from.

In a streaming landscape dominated by ad companies like Google and Amazon, Roku was once the viable alternative. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, enshitification comes for us all eventually.

JonEFive ,

Try finding a dumb tv for sale of relevant size and quality. I know you don’t have to connect it to wifi… Usually. But I just want a TV that doesn’t have all this shit in it to begin with.

JonEFive ,

It’s not as easy as moderating individual posts. Remember, Lemmy is decentralized. If you start your own Lemmy server and I federated with it, I’ll get all the stuff you post on my instance too (intentionally oversimplified).

Its up to you to moderate communities on your instance the way you see fit, and up to me to moderate mine. Even though our instances are federated, I can’t moderate on your behalf. It just isn’t feasible both in terms of the technology and in terms of the sheer volume of content you would have to try to moderate.

If you have a community that posts a mix of things I agree with and things I don’t, I really only have a couple options on my end. Basically I can block that community on my instance or block your instance altogether.

The reason why someone might block a community may be more about the legal risk than any moral justification. Depending on where you are, it might be illegal to even host that information. And since Lemmy instances cache posts from other instances, it could be argued that because that community is federated with your instance, you’re responsible for the content posted there.

JonEFive ,

If you watched the Matrix, you’d know the answer to that. The machines won a nearly infinite number of times.

JonEFive ,

How prey tell do you expect us to not “keep Trump” if Biden loses?

He was impeached twice. We couldn’t get rid of him. He tried to overthrow an election in a bid to stay in power. He actively encouraged an attempted insurrection in clear violation of the constitution and any number of other laws. But the Supreme Court says he can run again. Because he put his choices in the Supreme Court. We can’t get rid of him.

When you put him in power, he uses that power to stay there at all costs. He uses that power to make sure that he experiences no consequences for the illegal and immoral shit he does. And every time Trump avoids punishment for his behavior, he is only emboldened to behave even worse.

I think you’re too worried about sending a message to Biden, and not accurately reflecting on what that message might cost.

JonEFive ,

Gorilla. No doubt in my mind. It’s a hell of a lot easier to keep track of where one gorilla is compared to 5 black snakes.

One gorilla will probably ignore me as long as I keep my distance. Keeping distance and even putting a wall or 3 between you and the gorilla is trivial in a place as large as a mall.

On the other hand, snakes might mostly ignore me, but since I don’t know where the fuckers are, it’s a lot easier to accidentally startle or threaten one.

My new best friend friend Coco isn’t coming through pipes, air ducts, holes in walls, etc. Big strong boi isn’t hiding in the corner of a closet waiting to bite me as I reach in to grab a snack.

I’d go to the food court, put out a cornucopia of food, make sure the gorilla sees me leave it there for them, bow respectfully and slink away, then spend the rest of the 24 hours clear on the opposite side of the mall.

This all assumes that the gorilla isn’t enraged for any particular reason or starving. But even if so, I think gorilla is the safer answer, just the evasion technique changes.

JonEFive ,

I’m an tired of these mother fucking mambas in this mother fucking mall

JonEFive ,

They could also be limited to serving for say 10 years without the possibility of a second term. Effectively very similar to a lifetime appointment. There’s no re-election so they don’t have to rule on cases in a political manner. This doesn’t solve the problem of approval rating being completely meaningless, but at least there’s some limit on insanity.

JonEFive ,

Well, let’s reelect him and see what happens. I don’t think he’ll do it but I’d think it’s more likely when he isn’t worried about Trump winning if the move turns out to be more unpopular than expected.

JonEFive , (edited )

I saw a little of it. Then I saw the offending instances quickly banned. Then I saw a comment from the admin that they didn’t like having to implement bans of entire instances, but it became a necessity until admin of those offending instances took action.

I dunno, seems like it is working exactly as intended to me.

And it’s far better than a monolithic tech giant. Pointing at Mastodon and calling out spam is utterly silly when compared to the amount of spam on large services. This article reads like a hit piece sponsored by Xitter.

JonEFive ,

That said, if I wanted to spam the Fediverse, I’d just spin up my own instance of Lemmy or Mastodon.

Its actually smarter for spammers to infiltrate populated servers. Admins aren’t going to have a problem defederating from a pure spam instance. They’ll think twice about defederating from an instance with lots of legit users.

JonEFive ,

Because shut up. /s

But really though, the entire concept of using humans as batteries is absurd. Don’t think too hard about it, just enjoy the movie.

JonEFive ,

So you’re just out here trying to start a riot, eh?

JonEFive ,

Exactly. “My opinion is different from your life experience, and by showing me that fact first hand, you have made me uncomfortable.”

And as we all know, being uncomfortable because of another person is an attack. Irony of ironies, imagine how uncomfortable people must make that kid all the time, including this specific interaction.

JonEFive ,

Was definitely not expecting to see this copy pasta here.

JonEFive ,

Waterproofing is a lame excuse that I won’t accept from these manufacturers. It may be not as easy as just permanently gluing the thing together, but it’s definitely possible to have a sealed battery compartment.

JonEFive ,

I can decide to turn off nonsense podcasts. I can’t decide not to get shot if someone is shooting at me.

A better metaphor might be screaming “that guy’s got a gun” in a crowded theatre. I might be able to ignore it, but lots of people are going to believe it and act accordingly, and their reaction is probably not going to be good for anyone.

JonEFive ,

My favorite part about those years is that we didn’t have to care what Joe Rogan thought.

JonEFive ,

Maybe not individually, but if you care about the subjects that he talks about at all, it’s good to at least keep an eye on what he’s telling his millions of listeners.

JonEFive ,

Exactly. USB is designed so that you can have multiple devices attached to one port. 7 slots on the PC is plenty.

And in fact, they probably already have a hub. I can’t remember the last monitor that I bought that didn’t have a couple USB ports on it. Put that thing to use. Webcam, USB headset/mic, keyboard and mouse can all run perfectly well off a monitor hub as can most other accessories. Save the direct ports on the mobo for things that need the bandwidth like storage devices.

JonEFive ,

Yeah, the Jalopnik article is shamefully written. The cop wasn’t shooting at his car, he was shooting at a handcuffed suspect in his car. Regardless of his terrible aim, his intent in that moment was to kill a man because he imagined that he had been shot so hard that he actually fell down. When the New York Post gets gets it more accurate, you know the journalism is bad.

What’s even more horrifying about the situation is that another officer on scene also started shooting even though she didn’t fully know what was going on. Oh, actually, not just an officer, she was a sargent. She didn’t fully assess the situation, she just started shooting as well.

These people are no smarter and no more stable than poorly trained dogs.

JonEFive ,

Don’t think that applies here. If you need training to know that you shouldn’t open fire on a handcuffed man in the back of a squad car because you heard a light “thud” sound, police work is definitely not the job for you.

JonEFive ,

He resigned when he knew he was going to be fired. Probably easier to look for a job in another department before the dust settles.

JonEFive ,

Rich people’s real estate investments would lose value if we suddenly didn’t need massive office buildings.

JonEFive ,

I’m definitely voting for the leopards again this year. I mean, last time they ate the faces of people just like me, some of whom I didn’t like very much to begin with. But ultimately, I was mostly unharmed last time. Surely that will continue to be the case, and the leopards will only way the faces of other people, and not me.
