Well I did just read an article yesterday where some European billionaire was complaining that Europeans don’t have the “ambition” that Americans do, so they waste their lives by working fewer hours and spending time in social situations.

Clearly, the Italian builders guild only allows for a two hour work week, so no jobs ever get completed.

Got_Bent ,

They still do, but there are ways to either distribute the funds or set up grantor trusts that bring the rates back down to an acceptable billionaire rate. You know, next to nothing.

Got_Bent ,

We’re having the same conversation but about two different things. I thought we were discussing tax rates that trusts themselves pay. Not individual tax rates.

One thing I’ll correct myself on is that I just looked up trust tax rates and they’re paying only 20% on capital gains now. Pretty sure that was higher before the Cheeto took over.

I used to do a whole lot of trust returns, but I’m admittedly rusty on them today.

I went to non-Euclidian space and all I got was this lousy username.

On the trust thing - every once in a while I’ll go to a concert by myself, stand in the back, and enjoy the moment and remember the old times.

More often than not, three or four young ladies will come up over the course of the evening and start giving me their life stories and their relationship struggles and whatnot.

This isn’t a flirting or drunk thing on either end of the equation. In that moment, they just seem to need somebody to listen to them.

Got_Bent ,

What if they’re tiny men though? Like a hail report but, “Today across the central plains, residents experienced golf ball sized man rain.”

Got_Bent ,

I got that treatment in Thailand. Got all cocky and said extra spicy. Guy took it as a personal challenge. It pierced my soul and I soaked my clothes sweating but damnit I finished it and it was delicious.

I can’t do the hyper hot stuff anymore. I got old and my stomach gets very jaded.

Got_Bent ,

I do accounting for a lot of landlords. What he’s talking about is cash flow. Almost nobody ends up with taxable income from renting because the rent goes to the mortgage, property tax, insurance, maintenance, etc.

Before you crucify me on a barbed wire Popsicle stick, the part he’s leaving out is the equity he’s building at the tenant’s expense.

When he eventually sells the place, he’ll get hundreds of thousands of dollars that didn’t cost him anything. Whoever lived there just gets memories of that place they used to sleep in.

Got_Bent ,

I remember salting those things with my grandpa in his garden when I was a kid.

I also remember UCSC students cooking and eating them after the school adopted the banana slug mascot.

Got_Bent ,

Santa Cruz being Santa Cruz.

Got_Bent ,

Santa Cruz is weird, but I don’t know that it’s evergreen college weird.

Got_Bent ,

Dress codes have always been prohibitively expensive. When I was a young man getting my occupational feet wet in the nineties it was pretty much, “We’re gonna pay you three dollars an hour and we require three piece suits at all times.”

Got_Bent ,

Must be tough finding pants with eight or ten legs (depending on how you categorize the two arms and eight tentacles)

That’s an endless point of debate here in Texass.

In the summer months, if you aren’t done mowing by seven in the morning, you’re gonna die of heat stroke.

Got_Bent ,

Based on illustrated stories I was fed as a child, I would now like to know if the early Christians ate the dinosaurs after they were finished riding them.

Got_Bent ,

I’d like to return to the simple days of lemme beans, please.

Got_Bent ,

War and policing. You’re dug into a foxhole/bunker with your bolt action rifle, and a few thousand of these things come marching along. Or you’re protesting the party in power, so a few hundred of these automated law enforcement officers get sprung loose to “keep the peace”

Got_Bent ,

Expensive and impractical today, yes. But we would say the same of every man, woman, and child having a supercomputer with the entirety of human knowledge in their pocket fifty years ago.

Got_Bent ,

Remember that one time Hillary Clinton answered an endless barrage of congressional questions for eleven hours without showing any signs of fatigue?

Apparently, she should’ve just taken a nap.

Got_Bent ,

If I remember, the babies were sliced up and used as toppings on a pedo gay pizza.

I’ve always kinda felt that a Venezuelan/Zimbabwean type currency crash has always been the end goal when it comes to US debt.

Borrow more money than exists many times over.

Spend the money

Devalue the underlying currency of the debt to effectively zero

Fuck over millions upon millions of people

But hey, the spending was, in the end, all free!

Got_Bent ,

I mean, I was more looking for examples of currencies that had crashed to near zero than the specific driving forces behind the illustrations, but ok.

Got_Bent ,

Don’t you understand? Every casual comment made in passing online needs to have been put through rigorous academic peer review and include citations on international economies and the mechanics of global currency exchanges, or the commenter must face complete social ridicule and ostracization. /s

Got_Bent ,

I miss the days when Google maps would tell you to get in a canoe for transoceanic routes.

I suspect some enterprising person actually tried it, thus depriving the rest of us our directional humor.

Got_Bent ,

So I was on a jury pool in December.

After the attorneys for both sides finished their dog and pony show, the judge himself made each of us answer the following question:

What is the purpose of criminal incarceration?

A - Punishment

B - Deterrence

C - Rehabilitation

After all seventy five of us had answered, all of us who responded with anything other than punishment were dismissed. Even those who answered a combination of the choices. Nope. Punishment was the only correct answer.

To my amusement, this barely left enough people available to fill the jury box.

I followed the case. Guy robbed a convenience store. No death. No injury. Got fifty nine years.

Got_Bent ,

It’s already a thing and has been for quite some time. It’s called mark to market. Most people and companies use it to enjoy unrealized losses, but unrealized gains are in play. It’s not a new concept. It’s just that it’s an election at the individual level rather than a requirement.

Got_Bent ,

Are we sure these people don’t just want to ban Florida but have a spelling problem?

Got_Bent ,

Not gaming console, but the first time I played a CD on my computer in the nineties, I thought I was witnessing the end of technology. Then when Primus released Tales from the Punchbowl on CD-ROM with the interactive stuff, I thought this was surely it. Technology could proceed no further.

Got_Bent ,

One of the many reasons that I don’t have venmo or any other form of transfer app is so people can’t send me some nominal sum of money.

I’m not rich, but definitely one of the higher earners at my job. I don’t want some person making less than half what I do worrying about a slice of pizza or a cup of coffee.

To note: This is also not something I gloat over or continuously remind people of or any such thing. I’m just happy to have the resources to be able to bring the smallest smidgen of “make your day a little less shitty”

Got_Bent ,

I’ve seen that before and it still makes me laugh out loud

Got_Bent ,

Many years later, Coolio said that he regrets his reaction and that he realizes it’s an honor to get a Weird Al parody.

Got_Bent ,

Eh. Pretty much all of my viewing is related to physics I don’t understand, astronomy I don’t understand, and weird history stuff. I still get the soft porn algorithm on shorts.

Closest I come to viewing is when I’m scrolling and my phone interprets that as a click. Then I get pissed off because that fraction of a second for the algorithm is like letting a single pregnant cockroach into your kitchen.

Got_Bent ,

Probably the most valuable thing I learned in school was how to build amortization schedules. I’ve used it on vehicles, student debt, and mortgage. It’s really helped me win the “stop paying unnecessary interest to others” game.

Do you think the UK sometimes sits up late at night with a bottle of whisky and stalks the EU on social media?

When today’s scotus lineup repeatedly smacks you down for being too far to the right, you’ve got some issues.

This man wants to be imprisoned for his country.

Oblige him.

TIL the dev of Iron Lung, an acclaimed indie horror game, faced significant backlash over increasing the price from $6 to $8 (www.ign.com)

Then, responding to those who have said he’s “only doing this for the money", Szymanski tweeted: “Yes, no fucking shit. I make games for a living. If I didn't want to earn money from them I wouldn't charge money for them.”...

Got_Bent ,

There it is. I knew that kid would be in here somewhere.

Got_Bent ,

I have accomplished very little in my life.

I have pissed off innumerable people, been ostracized, ghosted, fired, disowned, discarded, and deserved all of it.

I have never lived up to my potential. I’ve got less than zero ambition.

I have been a historically awful husband and/or boyfriend.

But I accomplished one thing:

I got my daughter through college with no debt.

While she did the work to get admitted and slog through the classes and deal with the remote classroom bullshit of the COVID era, I’m proud that I was able to pull my shit together just long enough to keep writing those godforsaken checks so she will never know the struggle of being shackled to a lifetime of crippling debt.

I did one good thing in this lifetime, and because it gave her opportunity, it was all worth it.

How the fuck can an economy that’s almost nothing but advertisements sustain itself for any period of time? It feels like forcing more and more ads is the only thing anybody does for money anymore.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world)

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

Some games really needed manuals to play. That’s what text files were for.

I wonder if he’ll try to grab his stocks in the groin when they’re trading on the pink sheets.

The boss level puts you up against the eighties gravity bong.

Got_Bent ,

They’re pollinated by the majestic lot lizard.

Got_Bent ,

I love that there’s a reference to the Tom Hanks classic Mazes and Monsters in there.

Funny thing about the eighties. I was absolutely forbidden from playing dungeons and dragons but was totally allowed to play wizardry, Ultima, and bards tale.

Explain that parental logic.

I do feel I missed out. Never did get to play the real deal.

Got_Bent ,

Of course, repayment of loans for billionaires is entirely optional. Just raise the overdraft fees of the normies to compensate.
