I had a student some thirty years ago whose name was Oh Yu Suk.

It was difficult for me to maintain when I first saw it.

Got_Bent ,

I had to go look up when those things came out (1977) because by the time I got my hands on one in 1982 in the school library they were already little more than toys even when compared to the luxurious Vic 20.

I know we played some games off cassettes on them. I feel like Oregon trail was one of those games, but I’m suspicious of my own memory because I know I was playing that on my Apple 2, which I think had joystick driven hunting on it.

God I’m getting old and can’t remember the finer points anymore.

I do remember that other kids bullied the HELL out of me for carrying one of those plastic boxes full of floppies with me at school. Not a good time to be a nerd back then.

Got_Bent ,

By tenth grade I had been commissioned to write some software. When I completed it, I walked away from all of it because of the social stigma. Didn’t touch a computer again for ten years. I won’t say I regret that because walking away led me to other life adventures, but I will say I regret the circumstances that drove me to do it.

Got_Bent ,

I wish I knew the answer to this, but I don’t think a dollar amount floor on labor in fiat currency is it. That’ll just find a new equilibrium in a devalued currency.

I don’t write this because I disagree with the sentiment. I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment.

But wealth isn’t about dollars. It’s about assets. For day to day living, it’s about real estate.

I just wrote out a whole bunch of thoughts but I don’t think they’re applicable to the topic.

Maybe do things like:

Unoccupied residential real estate is taxed at some obscene percentage of assessed value.

No individual may own more than ten living spaces (apartments are a need, and somebody’s got to own them)

Entities (looking at you black rock) may not own residential real estate.

REITS are absolutely off the table.

Water is a public good and Nestle can get fucked

Student debt and medical debt are capped at some percentage of income formula.

And to get really crazy, instead of minimum wage, employers must demonstrate that employees can afford two bedrooms with no more than twenty five percent of gross wages.

I’m drinking beer and watching rich people ride horses. These are casual thoughts without citation and are not intended for academic review or criticism.

Got_Bent ,

I was lily white guy living in ground zero of MS13 gangland in Los Angeles in the early 2000s for four years. I know it’s crazy, but best neighbors I ever had. We all bbq’d together, watched each other’s kids, and got along well.

One morning I was taking a bus to work. Two guys robbed me while I was standing at the bus stop. I had fifteen dollars, which I happily gave to them.

I went over to my neighbor that evening and told him what happened.

The next day, there was fifteen dollars in my mailbox.

I moved from there to high end HOA in Texas and holy hell it was miserable. I hated them all. They were the nosiest, most judgemental assholes imaginable. One lady would go walking down the alleys checking how many beer cans people had in their recycling and called the police on one house charging them with child neglect because of beer cans in their recycling bin. Fuck that neighborhood forever.

(There’s a funny coda to the robbery. I smoked a lot back then. When they were done shoving the gun in my ribs and walking away, I blurted out, “guys, I’m stressed. Do one of you have a light?” and I swear on a stack of books of your choice that one of them turned around and lit my cigarette)

In the moment it felt like a “nothing personal just business”

Got_Bent ,

Where’s the next Kent State? The weapons and armor are much bigger this time.

Got_Bent ,

Bartender, I’ll have a screwdriver.

Got_Bent ,

Looks like he lives in the US. He’d better be careful if the Cheeto takes power. Donny would love to send him to his Russian piss buddy in the Kremlin.

Got_Bent ,

Considering that you’re probably making something like $1,500/mo in some place where rent is $3,000/mo I’d say take every discount you can get.

I briefly looked into doing a doctorate. The economics of it turned me away right quick.

Got_Bent ,

I lived in Korea for a while where they also do the ten thousand thing. I got used to it for numbers up to about ten million, but then would get quickly lost.

Since everybody was making a couple million won a month, knowing numbers that big was necessary.

Got_Bent ,

So you take a bad beer that’s been sitting in the sun for a few months. You know that smell?

Ramp that up a few orders of magnitude to the extent that it seizes up your breathing and makes your eyes tear up to the point of near blindness.

Got_Bent ,

We need a national Mitch McConnell ban.

Got_Bent OP ,

I’m likely your dad’s age. Strange that he wouldn’t get this concept. Even if you’re in my contacts, I’ll text before I call to ask if it’s ok. Even with my own spawn, I don’t just up and directly call her.

Got_Bent OP ,

I’ve had the same number for over twenty years. My guess would be all that time yielding no results from those calls. Otherwise I guess I’m just lucky. I almost never have my ringer or vibrate on so I never even see them as they come in.

Got_Bent OP ,

For friends my own age, we’re all working sixty plus hours a week because hurray America and we live in different time zones. It’s a mutual courtesy to set a time to talk.

Got_Bent OP ,

I never see most of these calls. They just show up on recent activity

Got_Bent OP ,

Oh no. My car warranty is about to expire, isn’t it?

Got_Bent OP ,

Username really checks out here

Got_Bent ,

Friend of mine had a heart attack in his early thirties working for AT&T in the nineties. I ended up in the ER with acute chest pains working for UBS.

These days, I’m generally able to weather the daily shit storms, but I’m mostly dead inside just waiting for the sweet, sweet relief of the real mortal deal.

I kinda wonder what the machine is going to have at its disposal to extract more out of me after I’ve left this mortal coil. Reanimated labor I suppose.

I got a pretty decent raise a couple weeks ago. As I usually do, I expressed my appreciation, but added the commentary that when a hundred percent of my time away from work is spent bedridden from exhaustion, what’s the difference between an $X thousand dollar raise and an $X million dollar raise.

Got_Bent ,

There’s also the little detail that I’m not a dev. But let the guy have his moment I guess.

Got_Bent ,

I am so much NOT a dev, that it took me a minute to even register what you were trying to say. I thought of a college classmate whose name is Dev.

I too have had my time in hard physical labor.

But you do you. Enjoy your Internet sanctimony.

Got_Bent ,

Interesting to see this. I live in Texas and the online comments every time they kill an inmate cause me to envision thousands of pro death penalty guys unzipping when it happens.

I guess having to face it in person affects the stimulative properties. Who’d a thunk it?

Got_Bent ,

This is 1874! You’ll be able to sue HER!

Got_Bent ,

Well I did just read an article yesterday where some European billionaire was complaining that Europeans don’t have the “ambition” that Americans do, so they waste their lives by working fewer hours and spending time in social situations.

Clearly, the Italian builders guild only allows for a two hour work week, so no jobs ever get completed.

Got_Bent ,

They still do, but there are ways to either distribute the funds or set up grantor trusts that bring the rates back down to an acceptable billionaire rate. You know, next to nothing.

Got_Bent ,

We’re having the same conversation but about two different things. I thought we were discussing tax rates that trusts themselves pay. Not individual tax rates.

One thing I’ll correct myself on is that I just looked up trust tax rates and they’re paying only 20% on capital gains now. Pretty sure that was higher before the Cheeto took over.

I used to do a whole lot of trust returns, but I’m admittedly rusty on them today.

Got_Bent ,

My Roku is doing this and has been doing this for quite some time.

Of all the ad delivery schemes cooked up over the past ten years, this one is the least offensive to me.

Like I’ll come back from the bathroom or whatever, and all that registers before I hit play is that some random graphic is covering the screen while on pause. I cannot name a single thing that’s been in any of those ads.

In general, I do wonder how effective this constant onslaught of marketing is. At some point there have got to be diminishing returns, right?

Got_Bent ,

Yes, yes. I’m sure I’ve got several things in my home that are terrible. I’ve cut off streaming and Amazon, have never owned a gaming console or gaming PC, quit reddit, quit Facebook, never had Twitter, Instagram, Tok Tok, used wish, etc. I do not use cash transfer apps. Neither my appliances nor my HVAC connect to the Internet.

But I can’t become a complete Luddite overnight. It’s a series of steps. So until this Roku that I bought about six or seven years ago craps the bed, I will continue using it, mostly with antenna broadcast local stations, but also with some of the free streaming sites like Tubi.

If you would like to come audit the entirety of my existence and personally fund immediate replacement of everything I have that is evil or offensive, I invite your benevolence.

Otherwise, let a guy use an illustrative example while engaging in casual Internet conversation in peace.

Got_Bent ,

I went to non-Euclidian space and all I got was this lousy username.

On the trust thing - every once in a while I’ll go to a concert by myself, stand in the back, and enjoy the moment and remember the old times.

More often than not, three or four young ladies will come up over the course of the evening and start giving me their life stories and their relationship struggles and whatnot.

This isn’t a flirting or drunk thing on either end of the equation. In that moment, they just seem to need somebody to listen to them.

Got_Bent ,

What if they’re tiny men though? Like a hail report but, “Today across the central plains, residents experienced golf ball sized man rain.”

Got_Bent ,

I got that treatment in Thailand. Got all cocky and said extra spicy. Guy took it as a personal challenge. It pierced my soul and I soaked my clothes sweating but damnit I finished it and it was delicious.

I can’t do the hyper hot stuff anymore. I got old and my stomach gets very jaded.

Got_Bent ,

I do accounting for a lot of landlords. What he’s talking about is cash flow. Almost nobody ends up with taxable income from renting because the rent goes to the mortgage, property tax, insurance, maintenance, etc.

Before you crucify me on a barbed wire Popsicle stick, the part he’s leaving out is the equity he’s building at the tenant’s expense.

When he eventually sells the place, he’ll get hundreds of thousands of dollars that didn’t cost him anything. Whoever lived there just gets memories of that place they used to sleep in.

Got_Bent ,

I remember salting those things with my grandpa in his garden when I was a kid.

I also remember UCSC students cooking and eating them after the school adopted the banana slug mascot.

Got_Bent ,

Santa Cruz being Santa Cruz.

Got_Bent ,

Santa Cruz is weird, but I don’t know that it’s evergreen college weird.

Got_Bent ,

Dress codes have always been prohibitively expensive. When I was a young man getting my occupational feet wet in the nineties it was pretty much, “We’re gonna pay you three dollars an hour and we require three piece suits at all times.”

Got_Bent ,

Must be tough finding pants with eight or ten legs (depending on how you categorize the two arms and eight tentacles)

Got_Bent , (edited )

That’s an endless point of debate here in Texass.

In the summer months, if you aren’t done mowing by seven in the morning, you’re gonna die of heat stroke.

Got_Bent ,

Based on illustrated stories I was fed as a child, I would now like to know if the early Christians ate the dinosaurs after they were finished riding them.

Got_Bent ,

I’d like to return to the simple days of lemme beans, please.

Got_Bent ,

War and policing. You’re dug into a foxhole/bunker with your bolt action rifle, and a few thousand of these things come marching along. Or you’re protesting the party in power, so a few hundred of these automated law enforcement officers get sprung loose to “keep the peace”

Got_Bent ,

Expensive and impractical today, yes. But we would say the same of every man, woman, and child having a supercomputer with the entirety of human knowledge in their pocket fifty years ago.

Got_Bent ,

Don’t you understand? Every casual comment made in passing online needs to have been put through rigorous academic peer review and include citations on international economies and the mechanics of global currency exchanges, or the commenter must face complete social ridicule and ostracization. /s
