They were specifically talking about medical debt.

Also, most European countries have excellent systems to catch those who lose jobs until they get a new one so you don’t have to start over.

GiddyGap ,

This is the most American thing I’ve read in a long time. I lived for decades in several European countries, and this description just seems like a different planet.

GiddyGap ,

No society should accept billionaires. There are so many other people who are in dire need. It makes zero difference if they have a billion or a 100 million.

GiddyGap ,

When Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott join forces to create the new learning plan…

GiddyGap ,

Unfortunately, everyone in this world has to worry about Trump.

GiddyGap ,

In most modern, developed countries, medical debt doesn’t even exist.

GiddyGap ,

Good to see that the Republicans are focusing on the truly big issues facing our nation…

GiddyGap ,

There’s a reason why literally no other country in the world is imitating the US healthcare insurance system.

GiddyGap ,

Britain has universal healthcare with zero deductible and zero co-pays. Not even on the same planet.

GiddyGap ,

I assume you’re in the US? Because many other developed countries rely a lot less on private retirement savings and a lot more on public retirement programs in order to get everyone covered.

Of course, that means higher earners would have to pay more into programs similar to social security through taxes to cover lower earners, which many Americans are not willing to do.

GiddyGap ,

The FL Republicans just want to make a political statement.

GiddyGap ,

Your lower energy bill is just one side of it. The true win is for our planet.

GiddyGap ,

So, what you’re saying is that people are selfish douchebags who care only about their own pocketbook? Sounds about right.

GiddyGap ,

We all need to do what we can, even when it’s just little things like buying less plastic or considering sustainable groceries.

Right now, the US is one of the bigger culprits in the world, and a great place to start is to vote for people who actually want to do something for our planet.

GiddyGap ,

Worth noting that homeownership has never been part of the Swiss Dream like it’s part of the American Dream. Still, the average Swiss person is significantly better of financially than the average American.

Same is true to some degree in Germany.

GiddyGap ,

Same as everywhere else in the EU and with an extra layer of security on flights to the US like in many other countries.

Must have been the mistake of individuals and not the overall security.

GiddyGap ,

more liberal grounds for divorce meant that instead of getting a divorce in your actual home state, it could be much easier to become a temporary Nevada resident, secure a divorce, and then return to home. This of course made a lot of conservative politicians and social leaders in other states furious. They hated that residents could circumnavigate their own state laws and they tried to bar the legality of a Nevada-acquired divorce

Hmm. Where have I heard something similar lately…?

GiddyGap ,

Biden will probably win some and lose some no matter what stance he takes on this issue. He might lose some pro-palestinian voters but gain some pro-israel moderates.

Still, I don’t think many pro-palestinian voters will move away from Democrats because there’s nowhere else to go except to not vote, which I guess some may choose.

GiddyGap ,

Many people want to downsize when they retire. Maybe they could do that in MN?

GiddyGap ,

the law should be the same for all, not at the interpretation of whichever judge you get.

Welcome to the US of A. Happens literally all the time. Hence the big fight over control of the Supreme Court.

GiddyGap ,

Actually, I’d say that many countries in the EU are doing significantly better. Especially the ones with extensive social safety nets like the Nordic countries, Germany, the Netherlands and a few more.

But it requires that people are actually willing to redistribute wealth from the upper half to the lower half. Unfortunately, many in the upper half, who usually also possess the power, are often not willing to implement those policies.

Wi-Fi 7 to get the final seal of approval early next year, new standard is up to 4.8 times faster than Wi-Fi 6::There are a lot of ‘draft’ Wi-Fi 7 devices around, but ‘Wi-Fi 7 Certified’ devices will only come to market sometime next year.

Well, then they have to rush out to buy a new, fancy router for the basement to support their newest thing. And round and round we go…

GiddyGap ,

There’s just a lot of inequality in the US that is both socially and politically unacceptable in the rest of the developed world. Extremes are more accepted here.

There are more extremely rich people than you would see in other Western countries and and many, many more extremely poor people than in other Western countries. Alleviating that would mean implementing policies to redistribute wealth that many Americans are not willing to implement, especially conservatives.

The US basically sacrifices the good of the many for the great of the few.

GiddyGap ,

Which seems even stranger. In many other countries, Christians vote left of center to promote economic equality, reduce poverty, get green policies to protect God’s green earth, make sure that everyone has universal access to healthcare and education, etc.

In the US, they vote oppotite of that.

Calls to reform UN Security Council after US vetoes Gaza ceasefire (www.aljazeera.com)

Calls are growing for the UN Security Council to be reformed after the US became the only member to use its veto power to block a Gaza ceasefire resolution, a move welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The UN chief says he will keep pushing for peace.

GiddyGap ,

We should protect our veto

The countries that currently have a veto make less sense the way the world is developing.

France and the UK have a veto, but Germany doesn’t? China has a veto but India doesn’t?

I get that it’s based on historic disputes after the war, but it doesn’t fit the current world well.

GiddyGap ,

The economy is dogshit right now.

It’s not so much the economy that’s dog shit as it is the policies regulating the economy that are dog shit. Better redistribution of wealth would go a long way to alleviate the economic inequality of the US economy.

Of course, that would require implementing policies that many, especially conservatives, are not willing to implement.

USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change (www.raillynews.com)

USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change::The USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change - US President Joe Biden announced in a speech on December 9, 2023 that they are carrying out the first high-speed train projects in US history. These projects are across America

GiddyGap ,

The US is extremely far behind the rest of the developed world and even much of the developing world at this point. It will take decades to catch up, let alone become a leader.

GiddyGap ,

Those subscribers were notified in July about the change. This is just a story about it taking effect in a few weeks.

GiddyGap ,

I really do wish we could get away from the buy-and-throw-away mentality. We need to repair and reuse a lot more.

GiddyGap ,

Honestly, though, Americans do seem dumber than average.

GiddyGap ,

I remember when many around the world looked up to the United States. Not so much anymore. It’s more like a train wreck people can’t stop staring at.

GiddyGap ,

As an American myself, it’s very clear that the US is on the decline and has been for quite a while. The decline really seemed to gain speed when Donald Trump won the Presidency, ushering in anti-intellectualism in the government as well as in large parts of the population.

In addition, many Americans don’t have access to or can’t afford education beyond highschool, education that’s freely available to most people in other developed countries at the beginning and throughout their career.

At the elementary level, American students also do worse than kids in many other countries, especially in Europe and Asia, as proven by the most recent PISA evaluation in 2023.

None. Norway was pretty much the first country to go ałl in on EV and Tesla.

GiddyGap ,

To me, the big draw to renting is the flexibility. It’s easier to move if you find a better deal elsewhere or you need to move for a job. It’s especially attractive in many European countries where a lease is “unlimited” and doesn’t run out unless you cancel and there’s only a three-month cancellation period. Makes it very flexible.

A bit different in the states where the lease term is set, usually at one year and then you renew and have to pay to break the lease if you move out before the end of the lease. But still more flexible than buying.

A quick sale is much more involved and risky, imo.

How is it different than switching to Enhanced search in Windows settings?

GiddyGap ,

Thanks for the info.

GiddyGap ,

This has been on the way in Europe for a decade now. Just wasn’t quite mature.

GiddyGap ,

the portions are tiny, like the big Mac almost fits the palm of my hand.

Well, McD is apparently also going to start making bigger burgers.

Vote for Trump and see how many dollars you’ll get…

Seems like the EU is the only major entity actually making an effort these days.

Very important that Norway gets in on this as well since they were very early and massive adopters of Tesla cars. That one will really chap Elon’s ass.
