At least there’s a “Reject all” button.

GiddyGap ,

Yet another reason to vote for Biden.

GiddyGap ,

A lot of things can get you arrested in Florida these days. You better not read these books.

GiddyGap ,

Welcome to America! All hail capitalism!

GiddyGap ,

It’s would be much better to focus on public transit and pedestrian and bike infrastructure, that solves more issues and is accessible to everyone.

Or both…?

GiddyGap ,

I’d rather focus on a more accessible solution that helps more.

I get that. But I think it’s extremely important to not mix climate policies with ideology. You risk alienating a very large chunk of the population, especially in the US, who are ideologically against public transportation.

We need everyone to get onboard with the green transition. Also conservatives.

GiddyGap ,

Not exactly a rave review of the American educational system.

No wonder European countries don’t accept US high school diplomas as sufficient for acceptance into a college or university.

GiddyGap ,

Yes, they do. I have been to two.

There may be some countries. But I know the Scandinavian countries will not accept US diplomas without the student passing extra testing that others don’t have to go through.

It’s possible that’s for a full program. You may be able to take individual classes or certs with a US diploma.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

GiddyGap ,

The US has not set up a system that compensates properly. Most European countries have a security net in place when capitalism squeezes regular people. The US does not. You’re on your own.

GiddyGap ,

Love the Heart Runner system in Denmark and Sweden. Wish the US had something like that.

Danish citizens and most Europeans get a lot for their tax money and fees. Not least peace of mind and a well-functioning society that actually makes it possible to live and not just survive.

I know it’s easy to complain, but as someone who lives in the US, I’d be thrilled to live in such a society. I don’t have any more money left over for myself even with the slightly lower taxes. I just have to pay out of pocket for everything.

GiddyGap ,

While I don’t think any just society should allow anyone to be a billionaire, at least Bill Gates is giving away a lot of his wealth.

Elon is probably one of the only people in the world to whom this is not too worrisome.

GiddyGap ,

Why do bans work in pretty much all other developed countries?

EU stops advertising on X over hate speech. Fines could follow next year (www.cnn.com)

EU stops advertising on X over hate speech. Fines could follow next year::The European Union is pulling its advertisements from Elon Musk’s X for now, citing an “alarming increase” in hate speech and disinformation on the platform formerly known as Twitter.

GiddyGap ,

I feel like the EU is one of the few forces of good in the world these days.

GiddyGap ,

We’re not very good at learning from the past, are we?

GiddyGap ,

So, you complain about Trump and then you proceed to elect your own Trump. What’s up with that, Netherlands?

GiddyGap ,

We’ll see about that.

GiddyGap ,

Trump is not the candidate of change. Everyone knows him and knows what he stands for. And he’s been rejected many times.

The Republicans are not going to have to lie about how little he’s done to help the poor and middle class.

It’s just a feeling you have. The average American is actually better off than ever. If you’re not better off than ever, you’re probably just not the average American.

investopedia.com/americans-are-wealthier-than-eve…

GiddyGap ,

Yeah, that’s what the article is talking about. That feeling of being less well off.

But even accounting for inflation, the average American is actually better off than ever, also while Biden’s been in office.

GiddyGap ,

Well, if you notice, it’s only blue states that support it. Red states like their gas guzzlers, but they’ll be forced to follow suit eventually.

GiddyGap ,

No single sentence is wrong, but overall it sounds unnatural and has none of the “flavor” of the language.

I’ve also found that it’s often contextually wrong. Like it doesn’t know what’s going on around it or how to interpret the previous paragraph or even the previous sentence, let alone the sentence two pages back that was actually relevant to the sentence it’s now working on.

People from around the developed world looking at America…shaking my head

Maryland's handgun licensing law has been struck down by a federal appeals court (apnews.com)

A federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down Maryland’s handgun licensing law, finding that its requirements, which include submitting fingerprints for a background check and taking a four-hour firearms safety course, are unconstitutionally restrictive....

I have to say, the US looks crazier and crazier by the day. It’s not just the guns, it’s pretty much everything these days.

GiddyGap ,

Exactly. Every time I’ve had an auto loan, the vehicle was still worth quite a bit and ran fine when the loan was paid off. Meanwhile, I was able to get to work and other places.

They can start their own handmaid’s tale on Mars. Let’s see how many women they can get to join these super manly men.

He has tons of controversial policy proposals. None of them will ever happen since none of the parties support him and he doesn’t have a majority to push anything through.

The only thing the Presidency in Argentina controls is the department of finance.

He has talked about using referendums to push non-fiscal issues, but none of those issues (like viewing abortion as murder) have anywhere near a majority in the population.

For this group of trans women, the pope and his message of inclusivity are a welcome change (apnews.com)

Pope Francis’ recent gesture of welcome for transgender Catholics has resonated strongly in a working class, seaside town south of Rome, where a community of trans women has found help and hope through a remarkable relationship with the pontiff forged during the darkest times of the pandemic....

This tells you something about how deeply religion can root itself, especially from childhood.

While outsiders may say “screw what the church says,” that may not be an option for many religious transexuals. It takes change from the top over generations.

GiddyGap OP ,

Yeah, but still. To me, one party wants as much of this to change as possible. The other one wants to take us as far back toward the 1950s as possible.

GiddyGap OP ,

Separate sentences, though.

You can buy medical debt at a fraction of the face value. That’s how these predatory debt collection companies make money.

Dying woman’s last wish: to pay off others’ medical debt – $15m worth (www.theguardian.com)

The New York City book publisher arranged to use money raised in her memory to buy up the medical debt of others – and then pay it off, according to a website which assisted her philanthropic effort and as of Friday had collected nearly all of her six-figure goal....

GiddyGap ,

Very distressing. And very distressing that it’s even necessary.

Ffs, America! Wake the heck up. Vote for a party that actually wants to change this insane healthcare system. In every other developed country, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

GiddyGap ,

Too many of the programs I use are Windows only.

GiddyGap ,

I use many proprietary pieces of software that are only available for Windows.

GiddyGap ,

This guy has made a lot of money for himself saying these things. Doesn’t make sense to stop now.

GiddyGap ,

Because Boise, ID is not interested in building the necessary infrastructure for ideological reasons.

GiddyGap ,

Been to Boise many time. Take a trip to Europe and then come back and tell me what you think of Boise’s bike infrastructure.

GiddyGap ,

Sure. I’m just saying that there are a lot of opposition in many US cities to building green and more progressive infrastructure that doesn’t specifically benefit cars. Especially in red states.

GiddyGap ,

Thank you Europe. Once again you prove yourself to be what we all aspire to be.

GiddyGap ,

Toxic masculinity is what you’re describing. It’s very prevalent in the US. Guns are part of that toxic male culture.

GiddyGap OP ,

And it’s not only gated communities. So many neighborhoods in the US, especially in the burbs, trap you at the entrance to the neighborhood. Unless you’re in a car, you simply can’t leave. There are no sidewalks and no bike lanes and nothing connecting you to the neighborhood down the road. It’s ridiculous. Hate it.
