I’m getting Y2K vibes,

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

my dad was a UNIX sysadmin. His assertion- at the time- that we’d be fine, did not live up the vast amounts of overtime he put in in during '99.

(To be clear it was never the then-modern systems, like windows ME, or '95 that were at problem. it was all the old-as fuck stuff… every major institution still uses. Like IRS’s COBOL database… that’s… still being…used.all of that stuff, they needed to patch to make it okay.)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

he just retired this year!

(so… uh… what happens in 2038?) (edit… I’ll worry about 2038 if we actually get to 2030.)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

was it really fucking around though? I mean, they hadn’t gotten past second base…

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

They are when there’s children present.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think they have a microscope capable,

In informal settings, most former presidents are referred to as ‘President [whatever]’. It’s only in formal gatherings where it’s considered appropriate. Most view it as a courtesy. Though, it should be noted, all of one ex-president takes offense to being called “Former President”; and he’s the same dumbass that most everyone outside of his circles no longer allow that courtesy.

This car has Indiana plates. Last time I checked… Indiana is not in China.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right it doesn’t.

But asian descent is roughly 3% of people in Indiana. People of mixed descent are 2.4%.

I assume with that attitude of yours, You can read my source and also recognize it’s remarkably unlikely that an Asian person would be driving a car with those plates; particularly since the first part is also part of the reference.

The point being, context matters. There are far, far more white nationalists in Indiana than there are Chinese-Americans.

Motion sensors don’t provide localization. Gps on cellphones are only really accurate to a few dozen meters.

You can couple gps and motion (and changes in gps location) to fudge it. Which is why when you diverge off the route navigation provides… it takes it a moment to figure it out. In the display, they “know” you’re on the road so it doesn’t have to be that accurate, they just guess what lane you’re in based on direction and such.

They’re certainly not going to know what seat you’re in.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

And how does the phone know if you just take left turns faster? How does it know if you’re in the left or right lane? It has no way of knowing what the forces are, or if that variation is caused by something else.

Your phone has no idea which side of the car it’s on, and insurance companies and their apps really don’t care.

Israel Has Carried Out 464 Attacks on Gaza’s Health Care System Since October 7 (truthout.org)

More than eight months into Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza, the territory’s healthcare system is barely functioning, with the World Health Organization reporting this week that there have been 464 Israeli attacks on Gaza’s healthcare system since October 7, affecting 101 health facilities....

I’d divert myself by playing with the murder mittens.

Those are some cute socks they’re wearing.

I mean, the only thing that shocked me, honestly, was that millionaires were willing to get inside that thing.

I mean. It looked like a giant fleshlite.

Rockets are always phallic. And yes, I make fun of them for it too.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

what the fuck is with all the double speak in this article? “allegedly”. “the aleged “Assault”…” Like. Dude. the coach is on camera. Choking out a student. You can argue that maybe it was some how consensual, maybe? At which point you need to ask can a minor actually consent to that? (Nope.)

also. No charges filed? are you fucking kidding me?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

the school district is distancing itself from the coach.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

That covers half of it. Read the article. They really are couching it in media-speak.

Almost as if they like the guy.

Watch the video. It’s pretty clear an assault took place, yet that too is “alleged”. The implication there is that the attack never happened- when it very clearly did.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

They have an interview with the victims mother.

They know the coach got fired immediately.

They have the video and a statement from the school acknowledging that an assault took place.

The video is just icing on the evidentiary cake.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

they literally put scare quotes around “assault” like it’s a dubious statement that an assault took place. Even if you want to try and somehow argue that the school got the wrong guy, that it really wasn’t the coach, there’s enough evidence to say that an assault took place.

(this is a screen grab from the linked article above.)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

The presumption of innocence is a very important part of protecting civil liberties of the accused

It is not a statement of fact. You don’t get convicted and suddenly become guilty. The jury finds that you have always been guilty, based on the evidence shown at trial. And that doesn’t even necessarily mean you’re truly guilty or not.

And while I get they’re trying to avoid lawsuits, but they’re taking it to pedantic extremes. The school found sufficient evidence to immediately terminate his employment, they throw the “allegedly” qualifier on there and scare quotes on “assault” at least once even though it’s patently obvious that an assault did happen.

No, no. You’re right maybe it was staged. Maybe the kid that got choked out asked for it…

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah….

Lemme guess next you’re going to say that the security tapes, which were provided by the school, were deep fakes.

… the mother got it from the kid and everyone else saw it happen on the tapes.

They can at the very least state that the kid was assaulted (with a deadly weapon, at that.) nobody is denying that much.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, faking a recording of a phone call that’s floating off in the nether is one thing.

Faking recordings that can only come from one specific camera, and can be matched to that specific camera, pulled from a presumably secured dvr is not something even the best AI can do. Certainly it without extensive access to those systems.

Every digital camera creates random and consistent artifacts in the video. Every police department in the nation has access to the necessary tools to do that analysis and it takes ten minutes.

Not that there’s a reason to check, because again, the cops presumably watched the video get pulled from The DVR minutes after it happened.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Yes because kids don’t know where mom and dad’s wallets are kept.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. Yes it does.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Weird? No. Just a cat.

(Who may have ate the duck to hide the evidence,)

FuglyDuck ,

Apex predator, right there.

So apex, they get another apex predator to do their bidding!

(Kitty is awesome!)

FuglyDuck ,

I had an Aussie shep whose definition of “with you” was “I can hear your whistle”.

If we forgot to tell her to stay with us, she’d range a bit further than we’d like looking for things to boss around.

Still kept her on a leash outside of places that it was specifically allowed (private cabin forest, for example,)

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

What about like one of the French blokes instead?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Actually it kind of was.

This is what they could dig up on the Biden’s after giving a special prosecutor near-carte-blanch to look for dirt on President Biden (and the rest of his family.) this, and the tax stuff.

Even then, they would have had a plea deal, which was more inline with normal sentencing and shit, except that, it wasn’t “enough” so the prosecution decided to fuck around.

As for the tax stuff also being brought in California… that’s been settled by the IRS and still being prosecuted all the same. Because politics.

Sharpies just make hurricanes travel farther inland.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

See, that isn’t ugly.

Which makes me think it was on purpose. Which makes me hate it a little less.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Is okay. Pretty much everyone condemns you, lady. Even the sycophants in your own party because there is no such thing as a “pure” zealot.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re in a vaguely sensitive industry, there’s going to be a few people seeing what they can get into at those conferences.

This is especially true of things like cyber security conferences, or tech. They’ll be crawling with corporate spies.

Actually, I’d say any major trade or industry conference is going to have corporate spies and more… eh, freelance trying to see what they can get into.

So the question becomes: have you/your company run a background check on that guy? No? Then why the hell do you trust him?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

That process is safe until it’s not. There may be an exploit there waiting to be discovered. Thst exploit will never happen if you just don’t.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

“Released”

Riiiiight. Totally of their own volition and with full knowledge of the shit they were about to be thrown into, right….?

@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Israel’s IDF relies on mandatory service. Turkish military, too. Russia.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

His check bounced.

“it’s going to take time, cuz you know. Banks are like that. They don’t like sending money if there’s no money. So give a few months, but the check is on the way, and it’s all good, okay?”

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

How ‘bout we just expose all the crime?

I know… there’s a lot, but if we get a really big shovel we might just get through it in the next decade or so. Maybe even before he carks it.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Historically fool was also used for people with metal disabilities. Same as idiot, dolt, simpleton, dumb, and virtually every other word we have for “crazy” and “stupid”

Besides which, crazy people aren’t necessarily stupid people, so fool wouldn’t work for that.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Where do you think the job title came from?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

It’s impressive.

Also, just a note, those length markers don’t point to anything useful on top. I assume it goes to the corner, but that’s an assumption.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

And the 60 mark?

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, jokes are supposed to be funny. Trump is never funny.

The disciples, many were fairly wealthy. Even the fishermen were successful enough to manage and maintain boats (and the labor to handle them). The idea that the disciples were poor is a bit errant.
