Huh, didn’t know that the fig fruit was also the flower.

So does the wasp simply help the propigation of the fig tree when it poliniates or does it helps the fig fruit ripen?

I know fig trees can also propgate via cutings too, so I’m wondering how essential wasps are to fig farms.

CubitOom ,

The video said that the unripe friut is the flower. Unless I misunderstood something it sounds like there’s not a traditional blossom. And the wasp cralws into the fruit to polenate it.

CubitOom ,

It’s not hard to crack sunflower seeds and then separate the seeds from the shell without putting it in your mouth.

Also, assuming these are not salted and if they are going into a compost pile that is reaching the correct heat, it won’t matter if it was in someone’s mouth or even if there is mold on it as it will literally cook out.

CubitOom ,

Its not new tech but you’d most likely only see this in a datacenter or buildings with 10 Gb connections as this is fiber optic cabling. One would need an SFP to actually connect it to the port however. Also the tips of the fiber were probably scratched when installing it into the vent holes so the whole cable will probably be replaced and then fixed, so there are multiple failures here.

This is what an SFP looks like. https://infosec.pub/pictrs/image/97d2269b-9254-4713-be8b-d7100972e8f4.png

Did they ever make a helicopter look like a squid?

You could probably make a new issue in a wishlust repo that uses markdown checkboxes or something similar. Would be good if you already host Gitea or another git sever.

GameBanana mods have saved me so much wasted time while playing animal crossing nh with my daughter.

The game is cute but it’s so slow with many long loading screens and has one if the worst UIs of any game I’ve ever played. Mods were able to help a bit atleast.

Fuck Nintendo.

You probably won’t be able to run an LTS kernel on a brand new PC that just hit the market. But using the most recent kernel for arch or a derivative like endevorOS should work after like a week maximum.

I did have an issue like this on Ubuntu and its what made me actually start distro hopping since it worked fine on fedora and Arch using the latest kernels.

Here’s a link to the developers website since i didnt see it in the article

I recommend EndeavorOS now to everyone that actually wants to learn linux, or people that don’t want to be “fighting” their os.

It works enough to not have to do anything to it besides update, including installing nvidia drivers. And it’s arch based so they can just read the arch wiki if they have questions.

Honestly the only issue ive had with it is one of apps not working on wayland so i just had to switch to x11.

Its a little less noob friendly than manjaro (they had great guis that make it so you never need to open a terminal at all) but i cant recommend manjaro anymore since they dont support the latest version of pacman.

As far as an os that’s close to enterprise servers, if they aren’t contanerizing the workloads and running k8s on a distroless (or atleast minimal) base image then i don’t want to work there anyway.

I don’t understand why there is a bull market.

Wouldn’t the latest CPI report mean that the FED is less likely to lower interest rates which in turn would mean the high APY cash accounts are going to stay in effect for longer? Meaning a 5% APY on liquid cash without risk.

The only reason I can think of is that Boomers are trying to maximize their retirement funds and not reading anything, not even headlines.

But this wouldn’t take into account the large banks and firms that are really leading the bull run.

Is this really just because of the idea that there is a potential for “AI” to increase productivity?

None of it makes sense to me, but I’m not an economist.

CubitOom ,

In today’s market, the perception or even the profitability of a product means nothing. All that actually matters is growth.

For a publicly traded company, or even one that just uses venture capital to start up; the product isn’t the thing that they might sell to consumers, it’s their brand. This is what gives them more capital to continue running the company and ultimately to profit.

This means that a company no longer needs to make good products, they don’t need to keep customers happy, they don’t even need to be profitable. All they need is to show growth opportunities to potential investors.

Invaders from underground are coming in cicada-geddon. It's the biggest bug emergence in centuries (apnews.com)

This spring, an unusual cicada double dose is about to invade a couple parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called “cicada-geddon.” The last time these two broods came out together in 1803 Thomas Jefferson, who wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them...

Running Slackware as your daily is great for learning about linux.

Although I haven’t used it in about 12 years. Is it still like this?

CubitOom ,

I’ve had the exact opposite experience on arch, mostly because of the arch wiki.

  1. Install arch using the arch wiki for reference
  2. If an issue arises, consult the arch wiki
  3. Document, contribute, and help others
CubitOom ,

Only if you use a dismissive parenting style.

CubitOom ,

I agree. But it all depends on how you do that.

The key is not trying to trick them. Acknowledging their feelings as valid, helping them identify what they are feeling, and help them soothe.

A dismissive parent doesn’t have to ignore a child. Just dismiss that child’s emotions as irrational or not helpful. They might use distractions or tricks which may limit the ability to do the above.

At the end of the day, tricking a child is not a good parenting style even though it can be cute and even funny.

CubitOom ,

I’m using language from Dr. John Gottman in Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child. This blog post is pretty much what’s in the book.

www.gottman.com/blog/the-four-parenting-styles/

CubitOom ,

I answered this in other comments in this post already and don’t want to spam. But basically children are capable of logic and you can convince them to do things without tricks or distractions.

CubitOom ,

True. I was trying to use the context in the meme to define “trick” as using deception or distraction.

It still takes a lot of extra time and patience even with neurotypical children. I have to schedule this time in case I need it when bringing my toddler to time slotted appointments. There is an authoritative element that is required as well to try to keep that time boxed and keep limits set while still acknowledging that their experience is valid. It’s not easy at all, but I wouldn’t equate it to dealing with a malevolent entity…maybe I’m just reading too much into a meme.

CubitOom ,

Yep, totally agreed.

CubitOom ,

You make a good point and there is nothing wrong with healthy skepticism, but you should keep in mind that this is a book from the 1998 by a credentialed and respected author.

The book does go into much further detail on the different styles it defines. And it utilizes extensive field work which started in 1986 which includes behavioral observations, parent / teacher questionnaires, and medical data. This is the psychologists summary of what they think is the best parenting styles at the time with the data they had.

I would recommend if you’re interested in the subject and wish to critique it, to read the book yourself.

I’ve just finished it and would love to see some opposing views that make sense.

CubitOom ,

Does this mean that Lemmy is not social media because it’s not ranking content with an algorithm?

I guess it depends on the definition of algorithm is as just sorting by newest is a type of algorithm.

CubitOom ,

Windows actually works better in a vm on Linux than on bare metal. And it’s got a much smaller chance of breaking my PC that way too.

CubitOom ,

Linux running inside WSL on Windows is the only thing that makes Windows usable.

CubitOom ,

I’m using kde5 on X. To my knowledge, the only issues you might have with Nvidia on Linux is if you want to use Wayland instead of X. Unless you are someone who refuses to use non-free drivers for philosophical reasons, but then you wouldn’t be using Windows.

I’ve been running an Nvidia GPU for over 6 years now on Linux without issues.

I even am using a fairly recent 4070ti and was able to use it with proprietary drivers soon after launch and was running cyberpunk 2077 at 4k with high settings and ray tracing with an average 60fps with dsr.

I also use the cuda cores for running open source llms locally and have no issues there either.

CubitOom ,

I haven’t run tumbleweed in a while, but I did have a similar issue on arch with X11 kde.

In the Nvidia settings, ensure that both Force Composition Pipeline and Force Full Composition Pipeline are disabled (unchecked) otherwise some games launched from steam using proton 8 or newer freezes on focus.

Obviously you’d have to fix your display drivers first. Maybe a reinstall is the quickest solution there.

CubitOom ,

Ummm…you think windows isn’t legacy?

CubitOom ,

You could save it to a config file and then load that before starting X

CubitOom ,

Do you get a plumber or an electrician?

CubitOom ,

I need to talk to you about your flair

CubitOom ,

You should try a few more.

  • Castle in the sky
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
  • Grave of the fireflies (followed by My Neighbor Totoro as it was originally released as a double feature)

I’m not sure why Spirited away seems to be the go to Ghibli film (maybe it is less offensive) but it’s probably one of my least favorites from the studio.

CubitOom ,

It’s about pacifism and respecting nature. So naturally it’s politically polarizing to some people.

I totally agree with it being one of the best

CubitOom ,

True, but some are more so than others. Like in spirited away. It’s kinda more just hinted at and it’s not central to the plot of the film. Which is why I think it’s more popular of a film in countries that rely on war and exploitation.

CubitOom ,

Hey…I also advocate for more solidarity within communities, growing your own food, using less plastic & cars, and Star Trek…Linux is just like 30% what I talk about.
