I also don’t get kcups in general. In what situation are the soft and paper-based Senseo pads not superior? He holders are easier to clean, they store better since they’re squishy and they come in smaller packs anyways. Plus they’re cheaper.

Why would someone go for those cups instead? 😒

More importantly, as a consumer you really ought to not be bothered whether CEO #1 gets 100% of the money or has to split 30% with CEO #2. Either way, some rich old farts are getting richer and fartier.

Yeah, sure, indie games and all. That’s nice. But it’s all the company side, and as a consumer we ought to look at consumer values, in which Steam is just strictly superior. It has features that are actually useful, a far far far far larger library, and most of us have a significant portion of our library there already.

Plus, hey: It doesn’t log you out every 2-3 days for not reason. 😑

Assuming he is still alive, he should probably try to hide at point Nemo or so. With a changed face. Underwater. Alone. With no network or internet access.

Damn, so he started the uprising again, beginning by brutally slamming a plane into a defenseless russian SAM? /s

Man this hit hard entirely due to the wording, before seeing the image.

Just last Friday, I had to let my 12 year old Chili strut regally across the rainbow bridge after a protracted battle with her kidneys that ultimately was just a symptom of a cancer. And exactly 1 week before that, my partner had to let go of her Leo, who was just as old but had since birth struggled with his weak heart.

I was prepared for the worst opening the image.

Thanks for making my day a little brighter instead, those are lovely (and ferocious) little huntresses!

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not what “yesterday’s” means in this context, or more specifically, you flipped the two characters if you wanted to use it like that.

Corrected it’d be:

“Thomas the Tank Engine was yesterday’s Lightning McQueen”

@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Note to be less pessimistic about this:

This is exactly how you are supposed to handle system settings being added to, removed or modified. You re-display a limited version of the first-run setup dialogue to the user. It feels familiar, they see it every so often, but you reduce it to the relevant pieces.

You may not like what MS changes, but from a user workflow this is sort-of the best case.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but the reason many companies stopped offering that (and we had this problem, too) is that users journalize clicking that like they click “OK” in installers or for cookies.

And when you have stuff that is important, they’re used to never interacting with it mentally.

Sure here it’s just about tracking shit and defaults, but there’s good reason to force the user to engage with something that could be an important setting.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I agree. That’s why my first post said, the overall UX behind this is solid, even if they use it for shitty purposes.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. This. Twitter. That’s it. Melon Husk doesn’t get a say, he ought to be ignored completely by everyone.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I can see why they’re not accommodating that. The guy lies habitually, there’s no reason to believe him about his diet.

So, SBF? How is crying wolf working out for you now?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Super hyped for this. It’s exactly my kind of thing, the gameplay being so reminiscent of Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3, and the art style being so beautiful.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

All steps of this seem easy enough, except for:

win

Damn.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

From my experience, small town in Norway can easily scale down to 15-20 houses, so yeah, difficult to say.

For example a few years ago my GF and her partner went to the grandparents in Veidnes, and wow that’s a whole new level of a couple houses in the middle of freaking nowhere…

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll be honest, having used lots of devices without and a few with, I am firmly in the “neat, but so what”-camp.

And I would surmise that this is overall how other companies see this: They could compete, but there’s just no reason to. Samsung doesn’t sell their phones and tablets because they have S-pens, they sell them because they’re the Apple of Android phones, they sell brand name for a sizable markup. That’s a soft goal to compete with, and hence not a good one to go after with one specific hardware feature.

Unless there’s some incentive, say a new mode of UI interaction that is entirely based on stylus interactions, I can’t see other manufacturers being interested in it at all.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Especially when you use said cluster munitions on your own soil that has already been mined by the russians anyways, you could even argue that the increased threat to your own civilians once they move back into the areas is small-ish. The threat is high, but it’s not much higher than before.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Uh, is it dead right now? Or why would it live, soon?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Oh. Oh the original “article” just accidentally the verb. I get it now. The “go” is missing. 😂 This is what I get for reading headlines during meetings.

@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder, could AI actually “collapse”? As in, once companies and people start leaving the AI hype space, could the external input become small enough so that the AI to AI input takes over to such a degree that all trained models become essentially useless?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, it’s a lot of water they’re releasing.

However, the water they’re releasing it into is a LOT of water.
Maybe all the scare-people are homeopathy-lovers and hence think that the oceans will become utterly radioactive due to some water memory nonsense shit?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Sadly for your version but very good for the actual release, the radioactivity of this is so incredibly irrelevant compared to the freaking oceans, Godzilla would be completely unable to even realize someone had done this.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Though with the Tomb, this passage from Wikipedia should be kept in mind:

However, the soil around the dome was found to be more contaminated than its contents, so a breach could not increase the radiation levels by any means. Because the cleaning operation in the 1970s only removed an estimated 0.8 percent of the total transuranic waste in the Enewetak atoll, the soil and the lagoon water surrounding the structure now contain a higher level of radioactivity than the debris of the dome itself, so even in the event of a total collapse, the radiation dose delivered to the local resident population or marine environment should not change significantly.

This only makes the whole thing more fucked up, but at least the tomb itself isn’t quite as bad as it sounded when I started reading up about it. By virtue of everything else being much worse. Fuck. I think that’s enough internet for today. :'(

For me, the same thing that was the reason at the time, too: Over the years my partner realized she’s not into men at all actually, just into women. The into-men part was more learned behavior left over from her youth (we were together for 15 years, so it’s utterly normalized to be together and hence needs a lot of time to realize you just do it out of habit).

Google hides the install button for most Play Store results (www.androidpolice.com)

“Google is constantly optimizing and tweaking its apps through various A/B tests, and the latest one for the Play Store has us scratching our heads quite a bit. We’ve noticed that the familiar and handy install button is disappearing for some in the Play Store’s search results, which means that you actually have to tap...

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Plus, this way at least people have to navigate to the result page before being able to install trash on their phones. It increases the chances of users figuring out they’re looking at malware marginally, but every little bit helps.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

True, and I wish they were at least transparent-ish about it. Show me that I just got something enabled. Or disabled.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Ahahahahaha. You’re funny. They’re only emboldended in their denial.

The only actual hope would be that the fires and floods claim them. We need to find a way to basically let the dickheads be the tip of the spear idiots like Alex Jones always claim they supposedly are. If they had to actually face these issues themselves, at actual danger, that might change their lives. Or alternative, at least remove them as an obstacle to actual action.

Carighan ,

This is fascinating, the sails look quite different from what I would have imagined given the name. Looks more like those ships with the rotating cylinders on them visually, even though of course those operated on a very different principle.

Excited to see how well this works. Would be amazing if they could slash fuel usage significantly, I remember reading even those oversized kites already did a fair bit.

@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Mäusespeck exists, but it’s something slightly different. It’s the sugared rhombus of the fluffy stuff, and packed in those triangle clear bags.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Took me a lot of years to not think it’s my company that is being run into the ground. I should not - and nowadays could not - care any less.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Reading about it, it seems they are in fact all the same. Even the white haribo mice. TIL.

Yeah, in a way. As in, I don’t feel like I have any responsibility in things in the company going to shits (which I would if it were, well, my company).

[Rant] Cloud service is not a reason to have phones with only 128 GB

I am in the process of looking between repairing my phone or switching to a new one. And the no brainer evolution to the OnePlus 7 Pro I have is a Pixel phone. Pixel Phones are definitely not perfect, I know that the battery would fall faster than other phones but hey, that’s ok, google chip in it, possibility to go...

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Imagine if we had this - physically tiny - and established standard how we could let the user add extra storage space to their small electronic devices.

I don’t know, maybe SanDisk could develop something like this, some Micro format storage device. That’s not a bad name, is it? Something with Micro, and SanDisk? Yeah, someone should create that!

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I currently have a Fairphone, and of course it includes a micro-SD slot. You’re supposed to use it for 5+ years, it’d be daft if you cannot expand it.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. It’s terrible in a lot of ways, but it is far better than the Old New Reddit UI.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

That is true, UK super- and hypermarkets were like this when I went to some of them. The attitude of customers is just weird.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I assume that’s SwiftKey/GBoard typing more than you, though? How fast are you on a computer with autocorrection turned on?

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I guess from the perspective of lawmakers, it’s no different requiring browsers to not display certain sites than requiring book stores to not sell certain books.

I can even see the “logic” in that to a degree, especially if the people talking about it are rather tech averse.

Joe Biden’s DOJ Is Claiming “There Is No Constitutional Right to a Stable Climate” (jacobin.com)

In the same week large swaths of the US were under extreme heat warnings, Joe Biden’s Justice Department filed its most recent motion to dismiss a landmark climate case by arguing that nothing in the Constitution guarantees the right to a secure climate.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It is not in the constitution, so it can’t be done - your point.

Actually they’re saying the opposite. It seems everyone else in this thread seems to misunderstand it the way you did, though. The actual issue is that there is no constitutional right because you cannot having this in the consititution because there’s no guarantee the US would be able to follow up on the right granted to its citizens.

E.g., as you said before, there is no constitutional right to cheap oil, either. The US gov can try to provide that, but they cannot guarantee they can provide that, hence they cannot grant it as a consititutional right.

I have the first friend that has really bad long-covid now, too. She’s visibly weaker and exhausted. Ouff.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Might I add, I hate the way every user-facing UI has devolved into the Youtube Shorts / TikTok “doomscrolling” swipe-UI now. There seems to be absolutely not a single braincell left in UI development to even consider the actual use case of the interface.

It’s all just:

  1. Monkey see UI to build.
  2. Moneky see TikTok big.
  3. Monkey do.
Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Hold on! This is a modal?! That’s even worse, I had these card-style things as scrollable cards before! 😧

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

The problem is not the conservatives tbh, more the actual nazis. Couldn’t worry much about the CDU and their religious nutjob sub-faction the CSU right now, they’re a known problem that is largely inept due to their own inability to effect change since not doing so is essentially their primary advertisement for themselves.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t forget breaking everything up into ever-smaller tasks just so that something, anything, can be closed every day. 😂 Because the process matters, not the work.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

If you want to try it before you but it, both GOG and Steam have a demo.

The demo is very good. I love how quick-saving is fully part of the story this time.

On the other hand, the way we socialise with strangers inherently benefits from centralisation. There’s a good reason everyone will intuitively go to the largest instance: it’s where everyone else is.

To alleviate that, you’d need to blur the lines enough for it to no longer be visible even. All communities behave as if they’re local and so on.
