Don’t sell them short; incel lifestyle is about so much more than (no) sex. I’d challenge you to find any incel posts that exhibit empathy or even a reasonable understanding of human interaction.

Gas is no longer in prime condition after 3-6 months, but is still combustible for at least a year or two. Old gas will damage your engine over time though. Most of the degradation is due to oxidization, so if the gas were in sealed cans, maybe it could last longer.

But yeah, 5+ years in and most gas is unlikely to work in an engine. You’d have to be making some kind of bio-ethanol at that point.

If the zombie plague is airborne, fuck it. Give me a barrel of bourbon and and a couple pounds of weed. That’s guaranteed to last me the rest of my life.

It’s good for general protection too. It can soften blows from other humans or just accidental injury while scavenging dilapidated buildings. What we consider to be minor bumps and scrapes now can be life threatening when you have inadequate medical supplies, malnutrition, sleep deprived, no sanitation, etc.

If you’re a fallout fan, you’re already on board. Our viewership is a given, and is theirs to lose. But for people who aren’t big fans, having big names attached shows it’s serious business. It’s meant to convince people on the fence that it’s worth an initial watch since there’s money and names behind it so maybe it’s not just “some dumb low budget video game shit.”

I took a week off for Thanksgiving and came back to understand Dynamo DB single table patterns I was stuck on before leaving. Sleep learning is real!

AstridWipenaugh ,

I disagree, it’s quite performant and cost effective. I work for a very large software company and it scales to our needs very well. However, it is emphatically not the solution to everything nor is it a replacement for all traditional RDBMS use cases. It also takes a quite different mindset when thinking about your data than when using SQL.

IMO what it does really well is handle being a persistent data store for well-formed REST API endpoints. When you understand your access patterns and implement your GSIs correctly, a RDBMS can’t match the performance even with well tuned queries. Dynamo excels at giving you a record set when you know exactly which set of records you want and it’s based on one or two very simple conditions.

Where it falls behind is for data warehousing and reporting use cases. Dynamo is comparatively slow and inefficient when it comes to asking complex questions about the data. RDBMS systems are built for that use case and as such have extensive tools to optimize whatever wild queries you want to throw at it.

If you’re interested in learning about single table design, which is not good for all cases, check out this video. I’ve watched it quite a few times and it’s been the biggest help in wrapping my head around how to do the data modeling for it. youtu.be/KYy8X8t4MB8

Ok my steam deck finally finished updating. Time to go. 😁

It’s just westerners that pronounce that kind of A sound aaaaall the way up our noses. You’re correct, according to what I learned from Uncle Roger. :)

Maryland roommates claim police detained them at gunpoint for no reason and shot their pet dog: "No remorse" (www.cbsnews.com)

Roommates who sued a Maryland county Monday claim police officers illegally entered their apartment without a warrant, detained them at gunpoint without justification and unnecessarily shot their pet dog, which was left paralyzed and ultimately euthanized....

AstridWipenaugh ,

The police are funded by taxpayers, so it doesn’t matter if it’s the city or the police that pay for it, you still foot the bill no matter what. The only solution where citizens don’t lose is if cops are required to carry personal malpractice insurance, like doctors. IMO making cops personally liable for their murders is a good place to start.

How is it not?

ter·ror·ism

noun

the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

They’re using the threat of violence, and sometimes using violence, to push their agenda of Israeli expansion into Palestinian territory.

It made you feel something. Now sit there quietly and think about why that is. What are you getting frustrated with? Why is it bothering you? Unfounded rage is trying to tell you something about yourself. There’s a reason, but you have to be able to be honest with yourself to figure out what it is. Once you can begin to understand it, you can begin to find ways to manage it.

AstridWipenaugh ,

They cited their sources and included direct quotations from the bill. Are you saying any of their claims about what the bill says are untrue? It’s good to have a healthy amount of skepticism, especially for groups with known biases, but what’s your point in calling this out here?

AstridWipenaugh ,

If I’m trying to pass on a dotted yellow (legal) and my car thinks I’m drunk and kills the engine or governs me to 10 mph, I’m fucked. Remotely stopping a car without situational review is super dangerous (for humans in them).

AstridWipenaugh ,

You’re not wrong, but shareholders look at their investment very differently than stockholders. Private shareholders can’t necessarily cash out whenever they want because the sale of private equity is usually tightly controlled by the company. This means they need to be interested in long-term growth and success. While public stockholders can also hold their shares for a long time, there’s much more ability and incentive to buy and sell quickly to make a quick profit.

Anecdotally, I worked for a publicly traded company for 6 years before they got bought and taken private by a private equity group. The way profitability and trends are measured is night and day. As a public company, everything was hyper focused on quarter by quarter results. One underperforming quarter meant a tank in stock prices, hiring freezes, and a general sentiment to the employees of “quit spending money on expenses if you want to have a job next quarter”. Being controlled by private equity, they’re most concerned with year over year growth and the long-term stability of our operations.

It costs like $30 to rent a box truck from home depot to take a big load home. I can get a few sheets of plywood on my Outback with a couple ratchet straps and not going over 40 lol.

I got physically attacked on the playground pretty much every day for years in elementary school. I feared my parents more than the attackers, so I took my lumps and never fought back. The teachers didn’t care. One day I had enough. Grabbed the kid punching me, threw him to the ground, and kicked him a couple dozen times. He had bruises on his arms, legs, and torso and probably a few bruised ribs. The principal told me that fighting is never ok, but she didn’t see it so couldn’t say if there was a fight or not and warned me against getting into any fights in the future because she’d probably see those… First time any staff stood up for me. No problem though, every one of those kids left me alone and never bothered me again.

It’s not visibly reflective. Yes, it’s white, but it’s cool to the touch because the majority of the energy is radiated out into space via non-visible wavelengths. Someone has already posted a great YouTube video from Night Hawk In Light in a comment where he explains how this tech works and makes his own paint!

I’ve finally reached the age where I don’t ruminate about being drafted anymore. I turned 18 shortly after 9/11 and registering for the SS was terrifying. Now I just have to worry about my two sons coming of age and being drafted into WW3. 😞

Autonauts, Astroneer, Factorio, Minecraft. All great games with excellent replay value IMO.

Not covered, IMO. A pharmacist isn’t writing the scrip and isn’t administering the treatment. They’re merely completing a retail transaction, albeit one with a lot of paperwork. If they have a moral position against doing their job as prescribed by law, they should find a new job.

A care provider, like a doctor or nurse, has personal involvement with the patient. I’m ok with refusing to perform a procedure they disagree with, as long as there is no negative impact for the patient.

I use an esim with a Pixel and Google Fi. The setup process is this:

  1. Sign in to Google account
  2. Complete normal phone setup
  3. Confirm notification prompt to use this device with my fi account
  4. Never make phone calls ew gross
AstridWipenaugh ,

Yep! I have a normal phone number and get unlimited voice and sms, and 5g data metered data at $10/GB. They have an unlimited plan too, but metered works best for me. It’s actually serviced by ATT and Verizon IIRC, so you connect to whichever is best.

Nope, no recording allowed. Best we have is this masterpiece from the courtroom sketch artist (this is real).

Biden can also veto any bill for any reason. “No funding for Israel until there’s a ceasefire”

AstridWipenaugh , (edited )

What has Biden done to stop Israel? Yes, he’s said he wants a ceasefire, but the US vetoing the UN resolution for a ceasefire, sending warships to the area to prevent anyone else from attacking Israel, sending Israel military aid, and continuing to insist Israel “has a right to defend itself” when the death toll is close to 10:1 Palestinians to Israelis all go in the “hell yes” column. I’m genuinely curious what actions you believe go in the “no” column. What has the US done to stop Israel?

Edit: downvoted with no reply. Thanks. That’s exactly the answer I expected.

AstridWipenaugh ,

It’s a tale as old as time. Just like the Hatfields and McCoys. They’ve hated each other for so long neither side remembers what started it and both sides have a list of grievances longer than they can keep track of and the score can never be settled. It’s to the point where there is no right side; both are wrong. You can make arguments that one side is more wrong than the other, but I’m not in favor of a “let the least wrong win” approach. Both sides are objectively wrong and both sides must stop.

AstridWipenaugh ,

I think the issue is that the question doesn’t appear to have been asked earnestly. Preemptively answering your own question with “sounds like activism” communicates you have already formed an opinion. If you’re asking out of genuine interest, check your preconceived notions at the door and only ask the question. Just “what is this 1819 site? Are they known to be a reputable source and do they demonstrate bias?” Is a good way to ask it.

AstridWipenaugh ,

The average life expectancy was low, because so so many people died very young. If you made it through your 20s, you’d be pretty likely to live to what we still consider “old age”.

For people living traditional lives, without modern medicine or markets, the most common age of death is about 70.

A humanitarian pause… you mean like the UN resolution calling for a temporary ceasefire that the US vetoed?

AstridWipenaugh ,

Because Judaism is simultaneously an ethnicity, a race, and a culture, and a religion, they have avoided assimilation into the larger cultures in the places they have lived. This causes resentment between the cultures. Look at how so many people view immigrants today. Now stretch that attitude out over 2000 years. With Jews always being in the minority, they become an easy target for hatred and scapegoating. They’re very obviously culturally different from other people where they live, by choice, so they’re an easy target for that kind of xenophobic propaganda.

Some of the negative associations were earned, like the “Jews and money” stereotypes. That comes from a long time ago when all abrahamic religions followed the moral code that charging interest on loaned money was immoral. The Jews believed this too, but because they are God’s chosen people and everyone else is not, they decided there was no moral problem with charging non-Jews interest. They would give out loans a lot more aggressively because there was a profit motive and risky loans could still be profitable. They became associated with money because they proliferated as bankers due to what was considered at the time to be unscrupulous banking.

None of that background justifies any modern antisemitism; hate is always wrong. Just answering where some of it came from historically.

AstridWipenaugh ,

If people could stop being xenophobic assholes, the world would be a better place. We’ve been unable to accomplish that at scale since humans have existed though, so I’ve got nothing. All I can do is to try and be a good person myself.

AstridWipenaugh ,

Hamas doesn’t need to do anything. All they have to do is say nobody’s getting out, which means the IDF can assume anyone running towards the exit is a terrorist making an attack. I think any foreign nationals that would ever travel to Gaza know better than to approach Israeli forces for help.

If there’s anyone that doesn’t want the outside world to know what’s up, ask the folks who recently cut off internet access to Gaza. Who was it? It wasn’t Hamas.

AstridWipenaugh ,

Yes, prior reporting covered that she had a heart condition and she was extremely aware that too much caffeine would kill her. The lemonade was clearly labeled with its caffeine content. It didn’t say it was extreme, but it was clearly labeled with how much is in it. The story that “she didn’t know” doesn’t add up unless she was just being wildly negligent.

Article with image of the labeling: www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/…/amp/

As someone with a food allergy, I check everything I eat for my allergens. If I’m not sure what’s in it, I don’t eat it. And all that will happen to me is I’ll feel ill for a while. Anyone with a lethal condition damn well knows better.

AstridWipenaugh ,

Their labeling clearly stated the amount of caffeine per 20 and 30 oz cups. Image: www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/…/amp/

Just above his lip only. Full beard otherwise. “It’s literally the opposite of the hitler stash!”

How should I handle an ex friend who feels like he needs to bully me to raise his own self esteem? (We're adults)

I went to college with this guy 10 years ago and I considered him a friend up until this year. Something changed in him, and he constantly needs to put me down and I don’t know how to handle it....

AstridWipenaugh ,

Just walk away. Block him any place he contacts you and don’t give him another thought. Why does he get to live rent free in your head? Evict him.

AstridWipenaugh ,

That last part happened to my cousin. He dated a guy for a few years and everyone liked him a lot. After they got married, he let all the crazy out and became mentally and physically abusive. It apparently started pretty much immediately after marriage, but it took several years before anyone found out what was happening.
