How can I make Lemmy show me good fresh content?

I’m subscribed to quite a few communities now but my subscribed feed is still pretty barren. Whether I sort by hot or active I’m seeing the same few posts a lot of the time, often with very few upvotes or comments. I also see months old posts popping up again and again. There is a post on one community with -39 score from 8...

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Super important to sort by Top 6 Hours. If you do that you will see the currently discussed posts. My feed has quite a lot of content because of this.

And yeah, maybe version 0.18.3 fixed issues with Hot but top 6 hours seems great.

This can’t be true. Lemmy world is over 100k users now. And it depends on how many are active.

But yes, it would be very beneficial to the entire lemmy network if many more instances could grow and get active communities. Right now it’s like every community is from Lemmy.world or Lemmy.ml. It’s stupid.

Edit: And I just checked out lemmy.world local… There are tons of posts that doesnt even federate to other instances. So the stability problems are pretty much affecting the entire fediverse now since they are so big.

Look at Lemmy world local using Voyager:

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah ok. Well honestly I think it’s absurd that they have so many users and communities, and I hope people take this time to spread out.

It’s almost comic how everyone is on Lemmy.world when there is over a thousand other instances with zero problems.

I recommend Lemmy.today and specially if you are not afraid to post stuff. Would be nice to get some more local conversions going.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I saw this and I really like that they are trying to improve it and innovate. Nothing has happened for a long time in the desktop innovation area since the web took over.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Lemmy.world is super big AND being attacked constantly. Smaller instances don’t have these issues and they are stable and fast. You can still subscribe to everything from Lemmy.world and your instance will remain up even when Lemmy.world is down.

I’m on lemmy.today and it’s fast and stable. Come join us and you will see.

Basically use the fediverse the way it was meant to be used.

Don’t use the same username (although you can if it’s available). But try to be a bit anonomous here.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s literally like thinking [email protected] and [email protected] is the same person. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It would be easier but would remove anonymity and allow user tracking.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s just getting started, and you can start new communities if you like. But no point starting ones that already exists on other instances.

The amount of local communities doesn’t matter much, Im subscribed to like 100 remote communities anyway. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Oh they did… Yeah I don’t know about microsoft these days, I don’t follow what they are doing. :) But yeah, just making a point.

I think it makes sense to use the fediverse in a semi-anonomous way and not strive for centralized login systems since it will lead to being tracked.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This should be put in large letters on the join lemmy site so people can understand the point of the fediverse…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s the thing about the fediverse, you need to be the change you want to see. Post a lot and contribute.

I will try and post something new every day to help keep new content flowing in. Can’t expect everyone else to just keep us entertained. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think probably this is it. Db upgrades are scary as hell.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I have thought about that, but I think it’s better to have a lot of content than no content. Of course the optimal would be if everyone posted quality content but maybe it’s more important to just have new content now they Lemmy is growing.

I think if Lemmy becomes very big, there will be enough users that people who want a bit higher quality can just skip the meme communities and all that and opt for better quality communities.

I miss cats a lot more than people.

If you like Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm you should check out The Life and Times of Tim (www.imdb.com)

I was scrolling through animated shows on IMDb and decided to give it The Life and Times of Tim and a watch and really enjoyed it. It reminds me a lot of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm where the protagonist gets in an awkward or uncomfortable situation and proceeds to stumble and just dig themself deeper into the pit...

Thanks for the tip, will absolutely try it out. :)

I’ve used matrix myself, it’s awesome. There is a good chance that it really takes off, the more people gets fed up with surveillance capitalism, which I guess is the best phrase to describe things right now.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It looks nice. But I assume it’s sending messages in clear text? Im using Element a bit (element.io) but it doesn’t feel as fun as Lemmy. I guess it can be great for general chatting in real time though.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No that should still work. The server will send a page to your browser, and when the browser renders it, it will request the ad. And your pihole will block the request.

Unless WEI somehow changes how page rendering works but I don’t think so.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Trust me, I’m Google.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes exactly. This is what worries me the most since I also run only Linux, and I can’t imagine even being interested in computers anymore if Linux is not allowed on the web. That would be horrific.

It’s 100% critically dangerous and must be stopped.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s absolutely horrible.

Fixed - thank you.

I love Firefox so much. Specially the built in sync. I can browse something on my phone and open it on my computer later and continue where I left off.

I’m currently in Gnome again. Two weeks ago it was kde for a few months. I keep switching back and forth. :)

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I may pay for it also but the other Lemmy clients are really good, so they may be hard to beat. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s quite rich, after the way they treated their mods.

Really a sign of them not giving a shit about anyone.

Please come to lemmy.today if you like a small fast instance with no downvotes.

Also federates with all other instances.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s not my instance, I just use it and like it. The instance lists only one admin. Is it common with several?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Fair point and I would assume the admin is open to sharing responsibilities once the instance grows. Can ask him. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I saw it being misused on reddit a lot so I like it. It was common for people to use it as a “i disagree” button, which created a big echo chamber. I read that many people felt that there was no point even posting to a discussion since they knew they would be downvoted.

I think reddit really turned to shit, and I was hoping Lemmy could take another direction here. You can still upvote to support your opinions riding to the top without needing to downvote someone.

I understand this is a hot topic for many though. I guess it depends on what your previous experiences at reddit has been.

And also you mention the word quality control. I’m not sure the majority is some kind of a quality control. I rather hear people’s opinions and make up my own mind. It would feel weird to have other people push down comments I may want to read.

It would be a sign of health in our societies if people stopped using the services of these leaches.

I enjoyed the read. I’m a fastmail user and I didn’t pick it for real privacy but because it’s not Google. It’s better than Gmail, more features, looks better, faster etc.

I don’t know how any email provider can provide real privacy since they have to scan for spam, malware, and so on.

Fastmail is part of the 5 eyes surveillance network as well: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes

Porn sites must have government health warning in Texas from September 1st::Just when we didn’t think the state of Texas could get any more wacko on tech policy, this latest bill really suggests otherwise. Porn is just not naked humans. It’s not like art. And the behavior in those movies rubs off on teenage guys, so they start to behave like in the movies.

I mean, I still think adding health warning is stupid, but at the same time, we can’t pretend porn doesn’t influence people.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You are actually wrong about that. Do some web searches on it and you will see.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This is exactly how I think about things also. Which is why I dropped this conversation. But it’s a fact that porn changes the perception of sex to a huge degree. But young guys don’t even see it because they don’t have any previous experience to compare to.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think because people’s egos are more fragile than ever these days. Being wrong is like end of the world.

Blizzard is another user hostile game company.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I installed it in VirtualBox because I wanted to try if a neovim plugin worked with it.

The most awful experience ever. It’s so bad it’s tragic, and screams surveillance late stage capitalism. If people don’t notice that, it’s because they have slowly become used to it under the windows regime.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think there will be two webs if this goes through.

One corporate web filled with surveillance, ads, forced use of approved operating systems and software, no ad blockers etc. This is the one all people who don’t care will use.

Then you will have another web where servers do not implement this shit. You are free to use any operating system, plugins, etc. The servers will be run by individuals. It’s the corporate free web that many of us actually want. It will have stuff like Lemmy and Mastadon, and probably some kind of a web search since the main search engines will all not be here I assume. New software technologies will evolve here.

As long as they don’t put this shit on router and network level, it’s possible to escape it by not using the ordinary web. But ofc we will have to use it to some degree at work, probably.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Nerds who are aware of this ignoring Google doesn’t make a difference.

Make noise about them instead. Bring up articles about who they actually are and what they are trying to do.

But sure, also stop using them if you are still using that shit. I don’t, there are tons of alternatives.
