Does anyone use a non-default voice for the Google Assistant? (Same for Siri, Alexa etc.)

Granted I’m not someone who uses AI assistants a lot, but I’ve never seen anyone use any other voices than the default one (Red). There are 10 voices for Google Assistant, apparently. Do you or someone you know use them?

Keep Oracle from deleteing free tier account/vps?

I’m looking to host my own website and mess around with some services but my current home server is already pushed to the max. Planning on getting some thin clients for proxmox when I have some more money, but for now I wanted to mess around on Oracles free tier to test some stuff. I heard they will randomly delete accounts /...

YSK: To account for all calories when cooking

One of the biggest overlooks when it comes to cooking dinners or any involved meal with multiple ingredients is accounting for the calories each ingredient will take. Let’s say you’re cooking pasta and you want to include the sauce, some seasonings, some things to mix with the pasta .etc...

Best <$400 USD Ultrabook for Debian 12

I’m trying to downsize from an aging gaming laptop to an ultrabook I can use for writing, web browsing, and JavaScript / Python web development. I understand an ultrabook will be a downgrade in the performance department, but I don’t need all the performance my current laptop offers....

Distro suggestions?

Currently running Kali on my laptop as that’s all it was used for. Looking for something more general purpose. Mainly steam for light gaming and being able to install the tools from Kali for stuff like tryhackme. Mostly familiar with Debian, as that’s what Kali is based on, but willing to try something else. Laptop is this...

[SOLVED] New Lemmy Admin

EDIT: With thanks to u/[email protected], I have a solution for cleaning up the one table that is growing ridiculously in size and that is the activity table. A TRUNCATE activity; command cleaned that right up. A word of caution is in order because the Lemmy instance must be shutdown completely and only the postgres container...

Good free TTS (text-to-speech) options?

Are there any free/open-source TTS options out there that are on the same level as Google Cloud’s? I tried a lot of free ones, but they are absolutely awful and still sound like my Amiga did 30 years ago. With LLMs being available as open source, I am hoping there’s also a good TTS offering I just haven’t found yet.

Any open source Android users here?

Do you use a device with open source Android firmware? What device, which distro and what do you do with it? I have a Samsung tablet with LineageOS and apps from F-Droid. Other than displaying dire warnings about the unlocked bootloader every time it cold boots, It’s great for a “recliner system”: email, Web browsing,...

Do you think there's better ways to fediverse?

Personally I think that if there was like a central link/front end to access everything and then have each user be able to have a recommended list of instances/hosts to access would be a more user friendly solution and a better solution for search engines. I know the fediverse is about decentralization but having a central front...

Why do trees stems grow new "parts" inside and not outside i.e. why is the oldest part of the stem the innermost "ring" and not the outermost?

Wouldn’t grow something from the inside require a very strong force to “move” the already present one? Instead growing from the last “layer” towards the outside would require a lot less force, but perhaps a lot more matter....

[Solved with Gluetun] Tailscale ExitNode with VPN

I would really really really like to have one device on my tailnet as the exitnode for all other devices on the tailnet. However, most VPNs make this really difficult. Is there any way to do this? I’ve read it’s possible with split-tunnelling, but ProtonVPN (which I use) doesn’t support that. I just installed Alpine Linux...
