Every day there’s more big job cuts at tech and games companies. I’ve not seen anything explaining why they all seam to be at once like this. Is it coincidence or is there something driving all the job cuts?
During the pandemic, tech profits soared which led to massive hiring sprees. For all the press about layoffs at the big guys, I think most still have more workers than they did pre-pandemic.
Interests rates soared. Before the pandemic interest rates were ludicrously low, in other words it cost almost nothing to borrow money. This made it easier to spend on long term or unclear projects where the hope seemed to be “get enough users, then you can monetize.” Once interest rates rose, those became incredibly expensive projects, so funding is now much more scarce. Companies are pulling back on bigger projects or, like reddit, trying to monetize them faster. Startups are also finding it harder, so fewer jobs.
And of course, AI. No one is quite sure how much that’ll change the game but some folks think most programmers will be replaceable, or at least 1 programmer will be able to do the work of several. So, rather than hire and go through everything severance etc might entail, I think a lot of companies are taking a wait and see approach and thus not hiring.
On the second day of the mission, Wang floated over to his experiment and sought to activate the Drop Dynamics Module. But it didn’t work. He asked the NASA flight controllers on the ground if he could take some time to try to troubleshoot the problem and maybe fix the experiment. But on any Shuttle mission, time is precious....

Not to minimize the role that China’s educational indoctrination plays in this (because that is the underlying cause of the student feeling the need to defend China’s reputation with threats), but I’ve heard gamers threaten the same kind of bodily harm in League matches.
I think it’s tough to place the blame for this entirely on China, when he’s living in a society (our’s/ the US’s) that also teaches violence against women as a tool to silence them.
Sure, China made him feel the need to counter criticism of China with threats (just as the Chinese government does), but did China alone make him feel empowered to make those threats ones of bodily harm towards a woman? Much harder to say.
This could just as easily have been a story about an American guy defending Trump by telling a woman he’d hurt her.
in a similar vein, i make my own telescopes. My biggest one is...big. I brought it to an astronomy event and a very nerdy guy said “how much did that cost you to make?”

Smith’s “spiritual advisor”, Reverend Jeff Hood…is a manipulative idiot. Not uncommon in the religious community.
“It’s absolutely a terrifying thing to think that your life hangs in the balance with these guys.” Incorrect, he forfeited his life back in 1988 with the murder, they’re trying to finally carry out the death sentence. Nothing in 2024 is “hanging in the balance”.
[Jeff Hood] requested that Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey be present in the chamber during the execution to demonstrate her confidence in its safety, but had not received a response. “We have somebody who is championing this type of execution in the governor and yet she is unwilling to get her hands dirty,” No…no, Gov. Kay Ivey probably has better things to do than go out of her way to watch a man condemned to die, die. Acting like the governor of a whole-ass state needs to be brought to heel at the command of some random-ass, nobody preacher. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 Please. How insulting is that?
You literally do, though. Because wealth isn’t a function of the volume of currency you’ve amassed, it is the quality of goods and services that the currency can purchase. When you’ve got a ton of highly educated people working as a team to accomplish something exceptional, what you get back is far more than what you put in.
Just ask Billie Beane, a guy who is a testament to what the upper limit of $200k/player gets you in terms of a baseball team. Yeah, you can beat the average for a little while by one exceptional administrator squeezing the system on the margins. But the only way you win that final game of the season is with a budget like what the Red Soxes or the Dodgers or Astros bring to bare.
And in that triumph, you do - in fact - get rich. You fill more stadium seats. You sell more cars or phones. You build more elaborate buildings. You send people to the bottom of the sea (without them getting crushed to death) and up to the moon.
At some point, you’ve got to put forward an investment. You can’t run an advanced economy on poverty-level wages. And if you don’t have those advances in medicine and engineering and logistics and technology, what the fuck kind of rich are you?
Do you want to pay competitive salaries in Heaven or run a robber barony in Hell?
I mean, given the quality of product they’d been churning out, I don’t know if I’m going to loose sleep knowing we won’t get another Diablo Immortal or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III or Candy Crush Saga any time soon.
Like, if Larian or Nintendo was hemorrhaging talent, I’d be a bit more upset. But between these guys, EA, and Riot turning out flops… Idk, man. Maybe a shakeup that pulls people out of the Micro-transaction Factory isn’t the worst thing for the industry as a whole.
A judge ordered Wednesday that a trial be held next month to determine whether a Black high school student in Texas can continue being punished by his district for refusing to change a hairstyle he and his family say is protected by a new state law....
No, all kinds of stuff was banned and I think there was literally one black guy at my school. Come to think of it, he may have actually had cornrows and wasn’t suspended for it. But there was a very strict dress code. Bordering on military, now I think about it.
I’m not in the USA and I wish I didn’t have to hear about your annoying culture war shit constantly.
Okay. But Palestine still gonna be fucked. I get that you don’t care if Palestinians die. But I do. So I get to not vote for the guy currently enabling their genocide. “Trump would do it too” so you admit it’s bad? Demand better from your politicians you weakling.
I do care about those things. But I also care about Biden not being president for different, equally valid, equally moral, reasons. Also for pettiness sake, he fucking said he’d be a one term president before he ran in 2020 and we should fucking hold him to that but no one fucking remembers it. I cannot bring myself to vote for a man who has said and done the things he had said and done. So if I care about those things as I “should” and if I also care about doing something about the runaway supreme court and not arming a genocidal right wing government (just to name a couple of my objections to Biden’s presidency), who do I vote for? Do I just give Biden another 4 years because the other guy sucks? Even though I know that it means that he will allow a genocide to be carried out and join wars to defend that genocide which will lead to untold deaths?
Like, even in your comment, while you tell me it’s a personal decision, you’re still laying it on a bit thick and its clear what you think I should do with my vote.
Do I just give Biden another 4 years because the other guy sucks?
Yes. The choice is one or the other so you pick the least bad option. You’re not voting on whether or not to do a genocide, that’s not what this election is deciding. If you genuinely care about the Supreme Court, it’s fucked up because of Trump and if he wins he will stack it even further. And do you really think Trump is going to sell fewer weapons to murderous right wing governments than Biden will? Again, the choice is one or the other so you either vote for Biden or you are serving to empower Trump. You don’t have to love Biden or feel good about voting for him, but please recognize that an even worse scenario will unfold if Trump wins.
Depends on the joke I guess. If it’s something more commonly known, even if it is about tech, it would be funny for most people. Like the CD-ROM as a cup holder thing, that would be funny for most people.
Most people have this notion that tech people are like robots and get nothing outside of tech. That is true for most (I have to admit), but then you run into an odd ball like me. I’ve been to operas, plays, art exibitions, concerts (alternative music mostly). And I do enjoy doing all of that. Well, art exibitions not that much… depends on the art I guess. But yeah, I am very much into classical music, as well as the theater.
My point is, I like to dwell on social problems and constructs and why things are like this or like that and how we could make them better. And I agree, most of the questions regarding these things came through art (lyrics or a dialogue in a play). So it’s not that I’m cluless about life and how things work IRL. I do consider that it’s a shame that we have to do meaningless things in order to make ends meat, but that’s how life in this society is. I’m not delusional that a single individual (or even a million) can change how the world works. Thus, I do respect what the artists are trying to say, but they don’t usually offer solutions, just make us aware of the problem. Yes, I do agree that that is good as well, but I’ve seen this pattern over and over. Point to the problem with no real advice on how to solve it. I’m a problem solver, I don’t like it when a problem has no solution and becomes circumstance. Thus, simply pointing out to me that there is something seriously wrong with this or that is just not enough. Sure, if it’s entertaining, as an art exibit, OK, I can go with that… but that alone is just not enough to move me.
This is why I like movies like Fight Club. They don’t just point to the problem, but take real steps into solving it, no matter how absurd those steps might be (like banks have no backups of records offshore 😂). They still tried and had a step by step plan of doing it. That is what I like, a plan of action. Something that might not be thought of all the way through, but still, it’s a step in the right direction, and maybe we will change the plan when we see things aren’t what we thought.
People usually refer to me as the “gets the job done” guy. I either do it right or don’t do it all. I don’t like half baked solutions or endless meetings with nothing concrete to show for at the end. I would rather just start doing something about it, even if it’s wrong, then adapt the course of action, than just analyze to death and not actually do anything about the problem at hand. Sure, analysis is a very important part of planning, but from what I’ve seen so far in life, people do just that with no real incentive to actually start doing something about the problem. And that bugs me A LOT.
